《The Ultimate Yōkai Guide》Kudan

Traditionally, kudan are depicted as cows with human heads. However, in recent times they are occasionally depicted as humans with bovine heads, somewhat resembling the minotaur. These creatures are capable of human speech and are well known for telling prophesies that always come true and serving as omens of great tragedies such as famine. They are thought to die either after telling their prophesy or after whatever they predict comes true.

Despite being associated with ill omens, kudan are often seen as honorable creatures because of their association with honestly. Amulets depicting a kudan are thought to bring good luck and prosperity even in times of great hardship.

FUN FACT: Kudan sightings have occurred at least as recently as World War II. During the war, they were often said to foretell air raids.
