This apelike yōkai is thought to look somewhat like a gorilla and stand at roughly five feet tall. Depictions of it vary, with some claiming it has brown fur and others claiming it has black fur. However, it is widely agreed upon that it has large feet. Sightings have been reported on Mount Hiba in the Hiroshima Prefecture, pictured below.

Stories of this yōkai have only sprung up fairly recently, starting in the 1970's. Theories about its origin sometimes propose that it is merely a wild animal. Others believe it is a human that was raised by animals or even a human that was disfigured due to radiation.

This yōkai appears to be docile as sightings are rare, with evidence of it mainly being limited to footprints. Reported sightings of it claim that it quickly fled when spotted.

FUN FACT: This yōkai is actually considered a cryptid, meaning an animal whose existence is only supported by anecdotal evidence or other evidence that is not considered sufficient by mainstream science. In this way, it is similar to a bigfoot or a yeti.

Examples in various media:

Professor Talu Mizuki (The Secret Saturdays) This is an unusual case as this character is a human trapped in the body of a hibagon. The sole remains of the device that transferred his mind into the yōkai's body are visible on his head. The rest of the device and his original body have been destroyed, leaving him stuck as a yōkai.

Ned Lund (Big Hero 6: The Series) Ned was temporarily mutated into a hibagon by a patch placed on his skin while he was unconscious.
