And they were roommates.

This is my redemption arc since the only other Rin one shot on this book is shit.

(I think idk I'm reading the manga but I'm pretty sure it takes place during the Kyoto arc but it's nothing super major)

"So wait you want me to be your roommate while Yukio is gone?" (Y/n) questions with a confused look.

Rin returns the look, "yeah? That's what I just said."

"And you didn't ask Bon or someone else?"

"Ask Bon?!" He laughs, "why? So the whole building will burn down?!"

"I dunno know! Literally anyone else! Does Shura know about this?"

Rin scratches his head, "it was her idea... something about how you're the strongest in our class..."

With another sigh, "fine. How long?" She gives in, thinking it'll be a week to a month at the most.

"A year." He says, "but you can't take it back now!"

A part of (Y/n) wanted to slam the door in his face. Why didn't I ask how long before agreeing, she thinks. But alas what's done is done. At least Rin cooks snacks for them to eat.

Clearly they didn't stay in the same room in the building. And while this would never happen anywhere else at the academy, the higher ups had no choice but to accept Shura's proposal. She was a very persuading woman after all.

So (Y/n) was staying in the room across from Rin and Yukio's.

"Sorry." Yukio's bows when (Y/n) and Rin arrived.

"Don't apologize." (Y/n) puts a hand on his shoulder, "and don't worry. I'll keep an eye on him. If he does anything stupid I'll knock him out cold."

"You'll be doing that a lot then." He chuckles in reply, standing up straight.

"I heard that!" Rin yelled from inside the building.

Yukio shows (Y/n) around the building. "It's old but everything still works."

"Um won't people find it weird that I'm staying in the boys dorm?" She asks.

He thinks for a moment, as if everyone had forgotten about that. "Well.... as long as no one sees you living here it should be fine." He shrugs and continues with the tour. "This is our room," he walks over to the room beside it. "And this room is where Rin likes to cook."

She blinks, "cook."

"Cook." He confirms, "but it's only a rice cooker and a hot plate. With multiple fire extinguishers." Then he walks to the other side, the room directly across from their room. "And here is where you'll be staying. I'll let you get settled in before we can all go grab dinner."

"Thanks." She says and walks in, closing the door behind her. She sits on the bed and looks the floor. While being a room so close to Rin isn't a concern, someone finding out she now lives here is. It's only for a year, she tells herself.

After they ate and said "goodnight" Yukio and Rin were still up. "So are you going to be okay with (Y/n) here?" Yukio asks, turning off his desk lamp and takes off his glasses.

"Yeah," Rin looks up from he manga he's reading. "Why wouldn't I be?"

"Because you like her." The younger brother replies.

Rin looks away, "I did. I don't anymore."

"Uh huh."

"It's true!"

"Good night Rin."

He resists the urge to yell again. It might wake up (Y/n), he reasoned and went to sleep too.

"How much rice did you make?!" Rin exclaims. Bowls and bowls of rice lined the room with more being scooped out of the cooker.

"Too much..." (Y/n) mumbles, not making eye contact. "We can just eat it yeah?" Rin smacks his forehead with his hand and sighs. "I'm not a chef okay!"

"It's a rice cooker! And you had the instructions!" He yells back.

"Well maybe I didn't read the instructions!"

"Why wouldn't you read the instructions!"

"Because I'm a dumbass okay!" They both sighed and once again looked at all the rice. Trying to come up with a solution to get rid of it. "Could we call everyone else and they can bring food..." (Y/n) mumbles to herself, referring to the other students in her class.

"Like a hotpot but with rice?" Rin's eyes light up. "That's perfect!"

And so, their classmates all came over. Bon was dragged along with Shima and Miwa. Kamiki came after Shiemi begged her for about an hour. Everyone brought different fillings to make rice balls. They were a bunch of broke high school students after all.

In the end, it was a good night. Bon made fun of (Y/n) for not knowing how to cook with a rice cooker. Shima then chimed in with a few "kitchen disasters" Bon had made in the past. With Miwa laughing the whole time. Shiemi taught Kamiki an easier way to wrap the seaweed around the rice ball.

Finally, (Y/n) and Rin realized that they work well as roommates.

"Good morning." Rin greets, joining (Y/n) to brush his teeth.

"Good morning." She replies, washing her face. "This place isn't haunted by any demons, right?"

He gives her a confused look, "shouldn't be. Why?"

"Do you not hear all those weird noises in the night?" She asks, returning the confused look.

"No?"

"Oh okay then." And that was the end of the conversation. The day went on as usual, everyone else in their class was used to Yukio not being there now.

When night time rolled around, "hey." Rin gains (Y/n)'s attention as he makes himself a late night snack. "If you hear anything weird again tonight. Wake up and we'll go see what it is."

She nods, "okay." On cue, a strange growling sound comes from one of the upper floors.

"Oh." Rin says, finishing his last bite. "How haven't I heard that?"

"It's louder than usual." (Y/n) replies, "but like it's it a demon or a funny noise the pipes are making..."

"Why would the pipes make a noise like this?" He asks in a mocking sort of way.

"I dunno they don't teach us plumbing at an exorcist school." (Y/n) sasses back. "Come on let's just find out."

The two walk up the stairs, following the sound onto on the fourth floor. "Wait if it's a demon?" Rin says out loud thinking to himself. "I didn't bring my sword..."

"It's fine, Yukio gave me on of his guns before he left. Only four rounds up it should be fine." (Y/n) tells him. "That'll at least give us enough time for you to get your sword."

"And leave you to fight a demon." He scoffs.

"I am the strongest in the class and was chosen to watch you." She says and the noise moves to a higher floor. "Come on!" She starts running back towards the stairs. "Sounds like it's on the roof!"

"Can't be pipes then." He chuckles and she shoots him a joking glare. At the roof, Kuro was in his full form growling at something.

"We need to calm him down." (Y/n) takes out Yukio's gun, "go get your sword."

"R-right." Rin runs back into the building as (Y/n) slowly approaches the familiar.

"Kuro." She calls, he looks over at her. "What's wrong? What do you see?" He looks back into the darkness, backing up a bit. "It's too dark to see anything..." The only other weapon she had on her was a dagger. A special one made to kill demons, if they are small enough.

Whatever was lurking in the darkness comes charging at them. Kuro stands in front of (Y/n) and begins to wrestle it. Afraid of shooting and hitting Kuro, (Y/n) runs back into the dorm building. "Rin! Get a flash light!" She screams.

"Already got one!" He yells and reaches the top of the stairs. He shoves it into her hand and races to find Kuro. "Damn it why doesn't it have to be so dark?!"

"Find the highest point," she tosses him back the flash light, "and shine it on them." Rin follows her suggestion. Once the light it them, the demon looked like something made out of metal.

"See! That could be pipes!" (Y/n) yells, aiming the gun at it. "Kuro! Get back if you can!" The familiar lets go of the demon, getting to the side as (Y/n) fires the first round. It stumbles but didn't have much effect. "See any weak point!"

"On its back!" Rin shouts, "looks like a talisman symbol!"

"Stay there!" (Y/n) yells back, knowing that he would have gone for it himself. "Don't move!" She circles the demon while it lunges at her. She sees the spot he's talking about and pulls out her dagger. "Kuro! Lock it on its front side!"

The familiar listens and pins it down to the ground. (Y/n) pulls out her dagger and stabs it. The demon wails in pain before disappearing.

(Y/n) looks over at Rin who had starts running towards her. They don't say anything and check on Kuro. He had reverted back to his smaller form. "Just looks like he's got some scratches, nothing to major." She says and he nods along.

They return to their food back in the building. The adrenaline had worn off by this point. "You didn't want me to fight, did you?" He asks.

"Of course not." Rin is upset by this answer. "You're supposed to be a secret, I shouldn't even know. If anyone saw that blue flame it would be over for you."

He doesn't say anything. After hearing this time and time again, it had lost all meaning to him. Later that night he had a thought, she didn't say "I'm just trying to protect you!" There was no reason to. He also had another thought, "I just want to protect you, (Y/n)."

This thought popped into (Y/n)'s head that night too.

The year was almost up, Yukio would be back next month. Meaning the roommates arc is slowly coming to a close. With all the shenanigans, fun nights and storms Rin and (Y/n) had become extremely close.

Thanks to this Rin became closer with his classmates. Even making a few friends in different classes; hanging out with them on occasions.

For (Y/n), she got to have a best friend who lived across the hall. Sometimes she wonders what it would be like to hug him just a little longer. Or just randomly. Sure some best friends do that but they weren't the type to do so.

Rin on the other hand just had his feels grow more and more.

Until tonight; both were in their rooms with their heads against the door. Deciding to confess their feelings to each other. Taking the first step was the worst part. With a deep breath, they opened their doors.

Seeing each other equally embarrassed and flustered. It was awkward for sure.

"Hey..." (Y/n) says with a chuckle. "Couldn't sleep?"

"Yeah..." He replies with a smile. "Wanna talk until we fall asleep?"

"Sure." They both close their doors, leaning against them. A few nights have taken place like this, it wasn't anything out of the ordinary.

"There's something that's been on my mind lately, and, uh..." (Y/n) shakes her head and looks at him. "Look I know this is stupid but I just have to say it."

Rin nods, "take your time. We have all night." He gives her a reassuring smile.

"Okay." She closes her eyes, takes a deep breath and let's it out. Opening her eyes and looks at him. "Rin I like you."

He blinks but she continues.

"Which is awful since we're so close and live in the same building, across from each other. And I know it's stupid for me to tell you but-"

"I like you too." He cuts her off.

"Huh-" She gives him a puzzled look, as if her brain shut down and restarted.

"I like you." Rin tells her firmly. "I really do."

She sighs in relief and smiles. "Is that so?" She teases.

"Want me to prove it?" He opens his arms, signaling for her to embrace him.

She stands up, he follows her actions, and walks into his arms. He places her head over his heart. "This only happens when I'm around you, in moments like this."

She looks at him to see his facial expression but then looks away. "I still don't get how this happened. Sure people fall for their friends but still... it's not like I want to like you..."

He chuckles, "people just fall in love you know. There isn't any event that happens to start it. It just happens. People just fall for someone whether they can control it or not."

She laughs, "where did you learn to be so sappy?"

"Manga." He answers in a serious tone. (Y/n) laughs harder.

"Did manga teach you to kiss too?"

"Who knows? Why, do you want to find out?" Rin teases her back.

She gives him a "your kidding right?" He moves his face closer to hers. Giving (Y/n) the power to decide if she wanted to or not. A form of unspoken consent to kiss. She tilts her head, closes her eyes, and places her lips on his.
