《Anime One Shots Book 1》Kenma Kozume X Outgoing! Fem!Reader (Haikyuu!!)[Soulmate AU]{Eyes & Sleep}
There will be two AU in this one shot.
AU one: your eyes change color depending on who's emotion is stronger.
Example: Sora is feeling super happy and Kairi is in the middle, she doesn't have a super strong emotion present. Their eye color is orange.
Example: Soma is happy because he is cooking up a new dish. Erina is frustrated because of everything going on around her. Their eye color is yellow. Erina's emotion is stronger.
AU two: you can't sleep unless your soulmate is asleep or trying to go to sleep.
Example: Uka is up late studying while Kai is coming home from work and wants to sleep. Both of them can not sleep because Uka isn't making an effort to do so.
"Oi! Kenma!" Kuroo shouts at his best friends window. He was out on his typical morning run and saw the light on in his best friends room. Disregarding the neighbors around him, and Kenma's parents, he shouts again. This time Kenma slides the window open, cursing at himself for not closing the blinds more.
"You're gonna kill your soulmate if you don't sleep!" He chuckles, still jogging in place.
Kenma glares down at him, flips him off, before slowly closing the window with his finger still raised. His thoughts started to race again as he picked back up the controller. He checks his phone to see the time, school started in two hours. With the words of Kuroo still playing in his head, he goes to bed and closes his eyes. Kenma was immediately asleep.
Two hours had passed and Kenma checked to see what color his eyes were. They were still yellow from last night but had hints of red. The red would soon take over as the day wore on, he figured. He never bothered to check throughout the day like most people do. "They must be mad about last night..." He mumbles to himself, referring to his soulmate.
"Kenma!" Kuroo yelled at his bedroom window.
He sighed and opended the window once again, "I'll be down in a minute."
"Hurry or you'll be late!" He closes the window and quickly throws on his uniform.
Kenma checks his eyes one last time, more hints of red were appearing. He shakes his head and leaves. Kuroo greets him outside, "didn't think you'd make it."
"We have practice don't we?" Kenma asks, pulling out his Playstation Vita.
"Yep but we have to share with the softball team today. Something about needing to paint the field lines but not wanting to skip out on practicing." The third year replied, "Bokuto is going to be so jealous."
Kenma looks over to see the color to Kuroo's eyes, they were always a glowing shade of orange. Maybe that's because he always thought about sports, Kenma concluded.
As he walks into his classroom, he saw two girls standing outside of the room. One had an energy drink can. The kind that is recommended to be drunken slowly, in little amounts over time.
"Don't just chug it all!" The other girl yells at her friend. "You're not going to be able to play in a few hours!"
"Relax I do this all the time." She replies and keeps drinking it. "If my damn soulmate would sleep for once I wouldn't be in this mess."
Over hearing this, Kenma feels bad for her. Then thinks about the shape his soulmate might be in. Have they done the same thing this girl has? He wondered. Still he shrugs it off and enters the classroom.

The girl outside finishes her drink and enters while her friend goes to another classroom. She sits next to Kenma. They have never said a word to each other. Why would they? It's not like they have anything in common other than playing completely different sports.
----
Kuroo and Kenma enter the gym together; the softball team is already warming up.
"Pick up the pace girls!" Their captain shouted, "the volleyball team is here!" She was running ahead of everyone else.
Kenma recognizers her as the girl standing outside the classroom this morning. Her friend is right behind her. "Looks like we picked a good time." One of the volleyball members comments, staring at the girls run.
"Alright into the closet you go." Kuroo pushes him away, "you can come out when you stop being an ass." He slams the door and leans against it. A few other members come up to talk to him.
The softball captain sees him and tells something to her friend before running over to him. "We won't need much space. Maybe less than half the court."
He smiles, "then we'll take the other half. And we'll run outside while you set your stuff up."
"Thank you." She says and runs back over to her team.
"Alright guys, let's go!" Kuroo exits the gym, dragging the member he locked in the closet with him. "Three laps on the usual trail, and fast."
Most of the team was on their second lap when Kenma finished his first. This wasn't anything out of the ordinary. He always says he was never athletic. Never the less he was the teams best setter. Making up for his lack of stamina in almost any occasion.
By the time he finished, everyone else had already set up the net. "Kenma!" Kuroo shouts from across the gym. "Go into the closet and sleep." He says when he came closer. "Seriously. Your eyes are yellow right now. Get some sleep while you can." He shoves Kenma into the closet, "I'll wake you up if we need you."
With the door closed, and not being about to get any cell phone service, Kenma listens to the captain. He sees that the corner is empty; where the net poles are usually stored. He sits down on it after dragging a mat over. Leaning his head against the wall, he hopes his soulmate is also trying to sleep.
After a few minutes, Kenma was about to give up and go back out to practice. Until the softball captain opens the door.
"Oh." Her friend says, "don't mind us. The captain here needs to rest for a bit." Her arm is slung over her friends shoulder. "Kuroo told us you would be in here too."
He looks over at the captain. "She crashed after running around too much. So-"
"Just put me down already. I'll rest-"
"Good." Her friend cuts her off. "And as the second in command I will lead our team today." She sets up the other corner like Kenma did. "Now get some rest. Many the red in your eyes will fade away. And that little spot of yellow."
Sounds just like my eyes, Kenma thinks. Too tired to put his thoughts together. Both of those in the closet fall asleep two seconds later.
Kuroo loudly opens the door, wheeling in the cart of volleyballs. "Hey you two. Might want to leave before anyone gets the wrong idea." He walks over and shakes Kenma's shoulder. "Come on now, up you go."

"First you force me to sleep...." Kenma doesn't finish his sentence as the volleyball captain wakes up too.
"Looks like my damn soulmate decided to sleep. Maybe that's the schedule..." She mumbles and walks out. "How did it go?" She asks her friend.
Kuroo looks at Kenma's eyes. "Yellow has taken over again."
"Whatever." He walks past him and helps the others clean up.
By the end of practice, only the two captains and their close friends remained.
"Thank you again for letting us practice here today." Both girls bow, "I will check the field before we leave school to see if they have finished."
"No problem at all. We'll walk over there with you." Kuroo replies. "Honestly (Y/n) stop being so formal."
"It's a habit of hers." Her friend says and gets elbowed in the arm.
Kenma and (Y/n) make eye contact. "Your eyes are yellow too." She comments, "guess your soulmate is having a hard time."
"Yeah." He responds, "something like that..."
"Do you know who your soulmate is?" The friend asks.
He shakes his head, "no I don't."
----
"Huh?!" (Y/n)'s friend exclaims as Kenma lays his head down. "You're going to sleep through lunch!?"
"We have an important game today idiot. I need all the sleep I can get. Not like I got any last night." She defends, "you'll be fine without me. And I'll eat before the game. We are traveling after all."
Her friend walks away with a sigh. "I heard that volleyball has a game too." She says, "is that why you're here?"
He nods and drifts off to sleep. The sound of the bell ringing wakes Kenma up, he jumps in his seat. They were still the other people in the classroom. (Y/n) awakes up as well. "Hey," she gains his attention, "what color are my eyes?"
"Yellow." He says, "with some orange."
She looks at her phone, back at Kenma, then at her phone again. "You don't think that-"
"(Y/n)!" A softball member runs into the classroom. "Have you made plans for our strategy yet!?"
"I did last night. Get to class." She says as her classmates started walking in. "You'll be late."
(Y/n) couldn't finish what she was going to ask. The teacher walked in before she could even consider writing a note. When class ended, she didn't have time to look for him either. Having to go straight to the bus.
Which was fine, it was only a hunch after all.
That is until, "whoa (Y/n) are you okay?" her coach asked her as she boarded the bus. "Your eyes are so yellow."
She looks around for the volleyball team but couldn't find them. "Yes I'm fine. My eyes are always like this, it must be my soulmate." Her coach shrugs and she gets on the bus. As they were departing, she finds the boys. Crawling over her friend, she looks out the window. Barley catching a glimpse of Kenma's eyes.
"Aren't you being extra friendly today." Her friend teases. "What are you looking at?"
"Are my eyes still that yellow?" She asks.
"Yeah like they always are. Well," she takes a closer look, "it seems more intense today. Why?" (Y/n) doesn't say anything, but gives her a knowing look. It takes her a minute to figure it out. "Him?"
----
The girls won their game and were back at school before the boys. "What are you going to do now?" Her friend asks.
"What for him here." (Y/n) sighs, "if we are soulmates there's only one way to tell. Even then it could just be a coincidence..."
She sighs, putting a hand on the captains shoulder. "You are usually right about these things. I'm sure you could ask Kuroo about it too."
"No that would only upset him."
"Sometimes you are too carrying. Guess I'll have to wait with you."
"You don't have to." The volleyball bus pulls up. "The last train will be here soon."
"Then I'll have to stay over at your house." She smiles, "and I might have to drag Kuroo away."
One of the other volleyball members spots them. "Hey Kuroo! Those softball girls are here!"
Kenma tenses up. He too had connected the dots. The guilt had really sunken in; all those late nights keeping his soulmate up among other things.
"Hey." (Y/n) waves to him. "How was your game?"
"Fine, we won."
"Nice." She says and Kuroo walks slightly behind him.
"I heard you guys had a sweeping victory." The captain comments.
"Of course, my team is very competitive and hard working."
"Only because you work us hard." Her friend adds. "Anyway, Kuroo." He gets the hint immediately and walks ahead of the other two.
Kenma looks super uncomfortable until he sees (Y/n)'s soft face. "We're soulmates, aren't we?" She starts.
"I guess so." He says. "There's really no way to tell..."
"Other than a bunch of coincidences." She replies. "And our eyes are the same color all the time."
He didn't look up. "I'm sorry."
She puts a hand on his shoulder, "it's all good."
He brushes it off, "no it's not. I kept you up all those nights. Making you drink anything with lots of caffeine just to stay awake. Not to mention you must have had yellow eyes for most of your life..."
"Hey." (Y/n) looks at him. Her gaze makes him look at her. "Yes I was mad at you for that. It was really frustrating at times. But I always ignored what the color yellow means. I'm here for you. They say soulmates are bound together, maybe I'm what you needed all this time. A piece, that is."
Her friend and Kuroo try not to laugh at that speech. "She really is a caring person, Kenma." She adds. "Even to a complete stranger. She's trying to say that you should take to her whenever you need to."
Kenma looks at her again. Though they have the same eyes, her sparkled a little more. Perhaps that sparkle shows (Y/n) is a truly good person, he thinks. But he's stuck with her now.
----
"Do you have a match tomorrow?" Kenma asks (Y/n).
"Yeah it's an early one too. Don't stream too late today. Or I will drag you to bed." She replies. "Again."
"Okay okay." He sighs. "I'm solo today so it shouldn't be too long."
Their eyes stopped being yellow after high school. During this time, there were many nights were Kenma just couldn't bring himself to sleep. So he could call (Y/n).
She would talk him through whatever was on his mind. Or tell him a funny story. Many of them involve her friend doing something stupid. Sometimes, after a game, they would hangout for a while. Getting something to eat always put Kenma's mind at peace.
And it was vise versa.
Whenever (Y/n) was troubled with something and couldn't sleep, Kenma would talk it over with her. They would work through it together. This was while they remained friends. After all, you don't just fall in love with your soulmate right a way. It takes time like any other relationship.
Now they are dating and have been living together for awhile. (Y/n) actively gets Kenma away from streaming and outside. From playing volleyball with his old friends to going on runs with his girlfriend.
At midnight, (Y/n) barges into his room. She never wanted to show herself on stream, and plans to keep it that way. She was a professional softball player, and still didn't like being on camera much. She sits down in a chair and stares at him.
Was it the most tastefully way for him to sleep, no. Her most creative way was the time she tapped together a bunch of umbrellas. Opening the last one, and pulling him out of the camera's view. He was on a loading screen talking to chat, nothing important.
His fans thought it was funny though.
After feeling (Y/n)'s presence for too long, "alright guys I gotta end the stream today. Bye." He waves to the camera and cuts off the live stream. "Did you have to stare at me?" He sighs, turning off his PC and camera.
"You need to sleep as much as I do." She replies. "Or would you like the umbrellas to come back?" She teases.
"Please no. Chat literally didn't stop spamming that word for months." He rubs his face.
As they crawl into bed, (Y/n) pulls him close. "I might not be here when you wake up." She whispers, "but I love you and I'll see you when I get back."
He nods, "I love you too. Kick their asses tomorrow."
I was thinking about them having a conversation over the phone so show them slowly warming up to each other. But then decided to not write Kenma having a small break down almost every night. This oneshot is serious enough.
Explanation incase you didn't get it, got it straight from google:

It is just large enough for a college, a small town, and maybe even a few more unusual sorts of places. Of course, the townsfolk practically know each other as family. Flush-faced regulars can be found toasting just about anything in the Briar's Brew, then, a few streets away, the same haggle of older women stationed themselves on their perch as they did every day from one of the few balconies in Central Square. They fuss away now, spouting the usual gossip as they watch us all from on high. Then there is the College here on the Isle of Red. My college. It has been often described as an unusual place by a good deal of people on the mainland. If they only would visit -why I am sure they'll soon have a change of heart, they may even come to find it a quaint sort of place, odd but in the same way a tattered old quilt can be both odd looking and warm, and especially soft. We teach mostly the same sort of disciplines here, with fantastic and absolutely normal professors.I must conclude that I am quite smitten with myself. The stage is set with a level of perfection that would have astonished me in my youth. They are coming. Derek will follow her. He knows the weight of reality too intimately, but she will be his true north if only for a short time. A beacon in the storm to show him the stunning pastels and brightness the sun may yet refract through his thinner, sharper pieces. Theoline will lead as she always has- well not always, not yet. She holds onto questions feverishly tight, that one. Lights them up inside like a new type of fuel without the slightest worry of being burned. She knows... There is but a certain few who can look at a map and find nothing where I stand but the Atlantic Ocean. And still, there is earth beneath me, a noisy pub down the road from me, and several people clucking conspiratorially on a balcony above me. She knows... that the Isle of Red doesn't belong here. Neither, technically, do I. (Hello!
