Wrote a one shot based off this song, "Permeant Hug From You" by Dodie already but shut up.
This is going to be set in Japan, please keep that in mind.
In some relationships there is a tradition of some sort. From greeting each other to saying goodbye, or eating at a certain restaurant for their anniversary. Could be anything really. Bokuto and (Y/n)'s tradition, however, started before their romantic relationship began. They were childhood friends after all, only being one door to the left away from each other. They've seen all the good and bad that comes with growing up.
Both of them were sports players and both began to play at a young age. Trying out every new sport they saw on television they could. The two ran their parents crazy when the first time they saw the Summer Olympics. All parents kept the Winter Olympics a secret from this dynamic duo, including the neighbors.
Their first spot they tried was swimming one hot summer day. A few kids from their primary school had talked about it during their free time. So they all made plans to meet up over summer break to hang out. It quickly turned into a competition to see who could swim faster. Obliviously (Y/n) and Bokuto were the slowest. At the end of that summer they decided just to swim for fun. During that summer they also tennis and basketball. Those sports also joined the list of 'just for fun.'
That is until they saw the Summer Olympics. Beach volleyball one was during dinner time, this was the only time the television would be on. They were at Bokuto's house, (Y/n)'s parents had to work late that night. The moment Bokuto saw the player spike the ball over the net, he was hooked.
"Did you see that!" He exclaimed and pointed at the screen. "That was so cool!"
"Stop yelling." His mother replied in a calm tone until she saw (Y/n)'s eye sparkle.
"Show it again!" She cheered, both kids were now bouncing up and down in their chairs.
Both of his sisters left the table with scowl on their face. Hoping their younger brother will quickly grow out of this phase. Along with his friend who seemed to only add fuel to the fire. This wish never came true. Something they quickly found out when Bokuto and (Y/n) entered middle school.
----
They were second years now and Bokuto's match ran late. (Y/n) had her's before and stayed after to watch him play. Also wanted to walk home with him since it was now night time. A bitter cold winters night.
"Why can't we play earlier or something." She shivers, "it's not like players can focus on school when we have a match."

"Maybe you should wear something other than your school uniform then." He laughs being all warm in his coat.
"Shut up." She huffs, rubbing her hands over her arms. Breathing out into her hands for some quick warmth.
Bokuto changes the subject, "did you see me hit that spike?!"
"Which time?" She says, her fingers now feeling like they would fall off. They wouldn't though, it wasn't that cold.
This only stroked his ego more. "All of them were cool, huh? Bet the audience couldn't keep their eyes off of me." (Y/n) listens has he continues to praise himself and his teammates. How they managed to keep up with his personality on the court, she can't exactly figure it out.
Her teeth began to chatter and she was shivering even more. Bokuto takes off his coat and hands it to her, "don't give me that look. You're acting like your about to freeze to death so wear it."
It had his last name and number on the back. Every student who's apart of a sports team gets one when they start playing for free. They would have to buy another one if they wanted another one.
"Thanks." She grumbles and starts talking about her match. "Being a setter is fun an all but I wish I could score some points. Not counting dumps here."
"Have you talked to your coach about it? Or any of your teammates?"
She shakes her head, "no they all praise me so much for being the setter. Sometimes I just want to play something different you know?"
Bokuto nods his head in agreement even though he fell in love with volleyball years ago, and has no plans of 'betraying' that love. "We could always try out another sport together. Just like the old days."
(Y/n) once again shakes her head, "I think I should try something on my own." He frowns at her words. "I don't say that to be mean. You love volleyball Bokuto. There's a girl in my class who's on the basketball team. She said I could watch them practice to see if I'm interested."
Still pouting, he sighs in agreement. "If that's what you want I'll support you." When they arrived back to their houses, Bokuto refused to take back his coat. Saying, "give it back when you decide what sport you want to play. I'll be cheering you on," he points to the coat, "even when you think I'm not."
----
"Give them hell!" Bokuto cheers from the stands as (Y/n) walks out onto the court with her teammates. If her team won they would go to play in the torment. In fact they would be traveling there that night if they won. It was a lot of pressure on the team, especially the third years who practically carried the team.

Bokuto knew all too well the pressure placed on third years, as this was (Y/n) and his last year of high school. It made sure to be here for this game to cheer her on. He also knows that him being her calms her nerves down. She has the same effect on him.
(Y/n) was shooting guard for her schools basketball team. Her friend, the one she met in class back in middle school, was point guard. They practice hard during their first year of high school to ensure they would be standing on the court today.
It was a fierce match even up to the last five minutes. (Y/n) team had the lead by two points but they were all exhausted. All timeouts had been used up for both teams.
Both teams went back and forth until the opposing team hit the rim and (Y/n)'s teammate caught it. She past it to the point guard who brought it back to the other side of the court. She passes it to (Y/n) who goes in for a slam dunk.
Another opposing team player tries to block her, missing the ball and shoving her arm. (Y/n) still made the dunk and a foul was called.
"Yes." A few members of the crowd mutter, "make these points (L/n)." When a foul is called, the play who was pushed or shoved get to make two or three shots from the free throw line. Sometimes this occurs by accident which is why most player don't try it.
She makes all three baskets, three minutes left on the clock. When the game was over, (Y/n)'s team had barley won. Final score was 80 to 78.
Her team had a big group hug on the court after everything official was over. She checks her phone after changing clothes. "Don't forget to be on the bus in ten minutes." Her friends reminds her after briefly glancing at who she was texting.
"Got it." She mutters and heads to the front of the building. Where Bokuto was waiting in the cold.
"Hey!" She calls, walking down the stairs.
"Well hello their champion." He says and ruffles her hair, even after she swats him away. "Guess I'll see you when you get back."
"Yeah..." She replies and then her eyes lit up. She takes off her coat that has her last name and number on the back. "Here you go, for good luck. Just like always."
He puts it on and gives her his volleyball coat. "Tradition is tradition." He smiles, "I'll make sure to never take it off until you get back."
"Unless you take a shower or sleep." (Y/n) reminds him, "please take it off before you sleep."
"But then I won't be in your arms." He teases, secretly wishing they would date. Life has been too busy and he could never find the right time to even ask her out. Or anyone else, not that he wanted anyone else.
"Shut up." She playfully punches him in the arm. Thinking what he said was rather sweet but knows she couldn't let it show. Or could she. "Thank you for coming all the way out here to see me. It really means a lot."
"Of course you've traveled far and wide to watch me." He says, "I'll be back to pick you up whenever you return."
"Thank you." She smiles and gains a boost of courage. It must have been those foul points she earned. She kisses him on the cheek quickly before sprinting away, waving goodbye.
Bokuto clutches the coat material around his heart, "guess you'll be in my arms sooner than I thought..."
----
Now with a ring placed on each of their hands, (Y/n) and Bokuto find themselves at an air port. Bokuto, now being a pro volleyball players, is about to leave for the Summer Olympics.
"Same tradition as always." He says and wraps his coat around his wife like a cape. "I'll be back soon. Until then I hope you accept my material hugs."
(Y/n) pulls him into a long hug, "be safe and give them hell." She mutters into his neck, kissing his cheek.
He chuckles, "only for you. I won't have your cheers to hype me up though."
"We can call before your match starts but if we can't I'll still be with you." She replies, referring to her old university coat. He takes it with him to every match for good luck, even if (Y/n) cheers him on from the stands.
His teammates call him to board the plane.
They share a kiss and pull away from each other. "I love you." He waves goodbye from a distance.
(Y/n) puts on his coat and whispers to herself, "I love you too."
Rushed ending because I want to publish something since I've been way to busy this past month.
Only thing that needs explaining:
- Replaced the word "sweater/hoodie/jumper" for coat since everyone has a different word for it
Okay cool see ya later
