Narrator's POV
"Yeah, I'm just on my way to pick up Oliver." Peter said on the phone to Stephen as he swung from building to building to Oliver's school.
"Okay. Your dad and I won't be home for a few hours. We've got a meeting to attend." Stephen said.
"Okay. I'll make something to eat at home." Peter said, landing on top of a tall office building shadowing Oliver's school. "How've you been sleeping dad?" Peter asked.
"I've been sleeping better." Stephen answered.
"Well, lets hope it stays that way. I care about you dad."
"Thanks Peter." It was quiet between the two as they shared a smile. "Hey, I've got to go. I'll see later tonight."
"Okay. Tell Iron Dad I said hey."
"I will. Tell Oliver we said hi."
"Will do. Love you."
"Love you too."
"Bye."
"Bye." Stephen hung up.
Peter jumped off the building, landing quietly in the empty lot next to it, making sure no one saw him before he walked out of it. He stood at the gate of the school along with other parents.
"Three, two, one." The bell rang. Kids ran out of classrooms, screaming and running all about the place. Some headed to the playground. Ms. Casey came over to the gate and opened it. Kids raced over to their parents and embraced them.
Peter waited for Oliver. He knew Oliver always took his time packing his things and asking the teacher questions about the homework and or helping others.
Oh, yes. Oliver now had homework as a second grader.

"You add three to that, and then divide it by two. And then you get your answer." Oliver told one of his classmates as he packed his things in his backpack.
He was suddenly pushed down, hitting the ground with a thud.
"Ow." He groaned. He looked at his elbow. It had a strawberry. The carpet had given him a carpet burn when he was pushed. He looked up. There were two boys standing there.
"Hey Weirdo." One said.
Oliver got back up, but he was pushed down on the ground again. "Leave me alone Maxwell." Oliver said.
"Be quiet. You don't belong here. You can't. You're weird." Said the other boy, holding Oliver's backpack in his hand. He poured all of Oliver's stuff out onto the floor, but picked up a blue colored paper that caught his attention. "What is this?"

"Hey!" Oliver tried to get it, but the other boy pushed him on the ground and kept him down by placing a foot on Oliver's chest.
"Have a great day at school Oliver. Remember we're always there with you." The boy read aloud. "Ewww." He stuck his tongue out to Oliver. He ripped the paper. "Oops."
"Stop!" Oliver said, trying to get the boy's foot off of his chest. Oliver groaned, trying to get Maxwell's foot off his chest. "Ngh!" He sighed in frustration, tears filled his eyes.
"Aww, do you wanna cry to your mommy?" Taunted Maxwell. "Oh wait, you don't have one." He laughed. "Come on Grady."
Both boys walked away laughing, leaving Oliver on the ground in tears.

Peter was getting a little worried. Oliver was usually at the gate by now. He was about to go looking for him, when he finally saw him coming. He sighed in relief. Oliver held both sleeves of his backpack, drawing them close to his chest. His head hung low.
"Oliver!" Peter called, causing Oliver to pick his head up.
He saw his older brother standing at the gate, waiting for him. He stopped in his tracks and stared at him. Pools of tears formed in his eyes. He ran to his big brother and wrapped his arms around his waist. He shoved his face into Peter's lower stomach.
"Oof." Peter said. He patted his little brother on the back. "I'm happy to see you too." He said, smiling. Oliver looked at him with tears threatening to fall out of his eyes. He was trying to be strong for his brother. Peter's smile faded. He crouched down to his little brother's height. "Hey, hey, hey, hey." Oliver wiped his eyes. Peter removed his little brother's hands off his eyes. "Hey, what's wrong bud? What happened?" He asked.
"I-I..." Oliver sucked in a breath. He was choking on tears and the huge lump in his throat.
"Did you get a bad note? You didn't do too well on a test?" Peter asked. Oliver held back any cries that might escape from him if he opened his mouth. "Oliver it's okay. We fail sometimes, but that's how we learn." Peter said, picking up his little brother and holding him close.

"I-I wanna go home." Was what Oliver managed to get out of his mouth without letting any cries out.
"Let's go home bud." Peter smiled, holding his baby brother close.

Peter watched Oliver poke at his plate of mac n' cheese as they sat across each other at the dinner table. Oliver had been very quiet, which he usually wasn't. Peter chewed his food slowly, looking around. The clock ticking was the only sound in the dinning room aside from Oliver's fork poking the plate. Peter cleared his throat. "Uh, Papa and Dad said they loved you, and that they couldn't wait to come home to hear about your day." Peter said. Oliver was quiet. Peter blinked a few times. "Why don't you tell me how your day was? Hm?"
"It wasn't very good." Oliver spoke.
"That test still got you down?" Peter asked.
"No. I passed that easily." Oliver said, his stare fell to his lap. Pools of tears began to fill his eyes.
"Oliver, are you okay?" Peter asked, feeling his little bro's vibe die down.
Oliver sniffled. He picked his head up and looked at his big brother with tears eyes. "Today..." He paused. "I got picked on." Oliver said. Big crocodile tears spilled from his eyes.
"Oliver, why didn't you tell me sooner?" Peter asked, getting up from his seat and going over to Oliver. Oliver only cried more. He felt as he was in trouble now for not telling his big bro. "Hey, hey. It's okay. It's okay. I'm not mad." Peter helped Oliver wipe his tears away. "Tell me what happened."
Oliver gasped for air. "I-I was just helping Amy with her homework, and was packing my stuff. Then these two sixth graders came into my classroom and pushed me on the ground. They took all my stuff out and threw it on the floor, a-and they ripped the note Papa and Dad made for me." Oliver said. "They made fun of me because I don't have a mom." Oliver cried.
"Aww, Oliver. Come here." Peter pulled him in for a hug. "Don't listen to them. They're ignorant people. They're just scared because we're different. Being different isn't a bad thing." Peter said.
"They called me a weirdo." Oliver said, pulling away from Peter and looking at him.
"Psh. Who cares?" Peter said. "They're just jealous of you because you're so much more smarter and special than them. People used to pick on me a lot when I was your age." Peter said.
Oliver sniffled and wiped tears away. "They did?"
"Oh yeah. They still do, but I ignore them because I know none of that matters. And of course they're just jealous of me." Peter puffed his chest and stuck his chin out. Oliver laughed. Peter smiled. "You shouldn't let them get to you Oliver. You're strong, I know you are. You've got this." Peter told his little brother.
"Thanks Peter." Oliver smiled, sniffling.
"Now, you wanna go watch some cartoons?" Peter asked.
"Mhm." Oliver nodded.
"Aye aye captain!" Peter swooped Oliver off his feet and put him over his shoulder. He made airplane noises. "Oh no. Mayday Mayday. We're going down. I repeat, mayday mayday. Aaahh. Sploooooosh." Peter said, gently swinging Oliver around and placing him on the couch. He sat next to him. "Now, what do want to watch?" He asked, grabbing the remote.
"Hmm... Spongebob." Oliver said.
"A classic. On it sir." Peter said.

"Peter, we're-" Stephen stopped at the door when he saw his two sons.
"Oh, hey Dads." Peter said, putting a book he was reading down on his lap. He was laying down on the couch with Oliver asleep on top of him.
Tony was so touched. This made his heart happy. It was so heartwarming. It filled his heart with joy. He let his head fall on Stephen's shoulder as he sighed in happiness and closed his eyes, putting a hand over his chest.
"I'm going to take him up stairs to his room." Peter said, carefully getting up with Oliver in his arms. Oliver shifted a little, placing his head on Peter's shoulder where it'd be more comfortable to sleep on. "He's had quite a day." Peter whispered. "Goodnight." He said.
"Goodnight." Stephen smiled, watching Peter disappear upstairs with Oliver asleep on his shoulder.
"I'm so happy." Tony said, holding his husband's hand in his. "My heart is so happy."

When the first derelict alien spacecraft fell to Earth, humanity took what was found in it and propelled themselves to new heights. In their new Golden Age, humanity developed technology that they had only dreamed about. The following years saw hundreds more ships crash into the planet, spurring even greater technological leaps. An unassuming spacecraft, one of the dozens that fell yearly, descended on Siberia in 2021. The world took no particular notice of it. However, this one contained something beyond the miraculous technology that had made humans so prosperous. Three years later, in a top-secret underground facility in eastern Colorado, the automated construction of an army of Paladin Mobile Infantry Suits was underway. With this new, state-of-the-art weaponry, the military would turn the tide against the alien incursion that was consuming the planet. Humanity fell before that could happen. Sam was an engineer responsible for overseeing the facility. Now alone, he lives in utter boredom and near insanity, his only company the base’s pseudo AI and an army of empty Paladins. With the world gone to hell around him, and the things that caused it still living above, he decides that he is much better off staying exactly where he is. Unfortunately for him, that is no longer an option. This is the first novel I've written. The first fifteen or so chapters are going to be a little slower. I want there to be time to get to know the characters before they start blowing stuff up. Also, though the MC will be strong relative to the world, he won't be OP, and won't win every fight. Not every fight will be physical either. Currently, I'm aiming for something like 5 fairly short chapters a week, after the introduction part is done, but we'll see how that goes. Thanks for reading, and please let me know if I've made mistakes!
