《13 Reasons Why》Alex

You thought that everything was going well, you were in a happy relationship, you were getting good grades, everything was perfect. So why is it that you're sat all alone, at the edge of a cliff looking out to the rough waters below you?

School had just finished and you were waiting outside Alex's class waiting for him to leave so that you could walk with him to his car. The door opened and the hallway began to swarm with students. That's when you noticed the bleach blonde hair that belonged to the one and only Alex Standall, aka, your boyfriend. Alex was taller than most boys his age and you could spot him from a mile away. He turned his head enough to see you before continuing to walk in the opposite direction.

"Alex?" You shouted to try and get his attention. It wasn't any use. You ran up to him before giving him a gentle tug on his arm. You could feel him tense up at your touch.

"Yeah?" He sighed whilst rubbing the back of his neck.

"Walk with me?" You asked gently. He took a deep breath before nodding his head. You studied him closely. Alex wasn't always the person that would tell you how he felt, often leaving you to guess if he was okay or not. He had the same eyes just without the tiny specks of happiness you could easily read, his bags were darker than usual and his lips were constantly in a firm line. You sighed before lacing your fingers with his. Yet again he hesitated before joining the small amount of safety you shared. Well that's where you felt safe..until you got inside of Alex's car. He hadn't started the engine and had instead started playing with his fingers. This was a habit of Alex's you had finally began to notice. You felt a knot begin to form in your stomach as your eyes never left his saddened ones.

"Y/N..." he sighed. He looked you straight in the eyes before saying the words that had broken you.

"It's not working out.. I just...don't love you anymore." He paused,

"It's over" he said calmly. You knew it wouldn't last forever, but deep down you had that small amount of hope that maybe it would. Your lips began to quiver and your vision blurred. You wouldn't let Alex see you like this. He had to know that you could cope on your own. You shook your head before wiping the tears that spilled on your cheeks discreetly. He rested his hand on your thigh before you flinched and shifted out of his grasp. He frowned before finally speaking up.

"Say something" he whispered.

"Okay" you bluntly replied.

"Wh-Okay?" He asked, sounding baffled by your stubborn answer.

"Yeah."

"That's it?"

"What's left to say?" You replied looking out of your window. You couldn't look him in the eyes, you knew that would only break you. Alex turned away before twisting the key, making the engine roar. He reversed out of the school parking lot and drove you home. No words were shared in the car, Alex hadn't expected you to beg for him back but he hoped there may had been a few tears, a hint of sadness maybe.. a sign that you loved him. He finally pulled into your drive way before you grabbed your bag and opened the door. You didn't hesitate to instantly climb out of the car and slam the door, you walked up to your house without even looking back. You entered your house and soon slammed the door shut, as you did in Alex's car. You immediately ran up to your room and locked your door. Your put your music on and looked in your mirror. You sighed and looked at yourself from different angles, immediately beginning to frown. 'Of course Alex would leave me' you thought to yourself. "I'm not like the other girls, I thought that's why he liked me, maybe he wanted me because I was 'easy'"

You rolled the sleeves of your hoodie up to reveal your healing scars. You'd been clean ever since you and Alex had been together, he brought you nothing but happiness, he had shown you a side to life that you never thought existed. You took your index finger and began to trace over the scars reminding you of a time you wished you had forgotten. Of course you hadn't told Alex about your depression, let alone that he was your cure. As far as he knew, you were a happy teenager that enjoyed listening to music, going shopping and giving hugs. You wouldn't cut into your skin, not now, not ever. You didn't need something to cause more pain, you just needed the pain to stop.

For all of it to end.

And that's how it began. It had been a week since you and Alex had broken up. You sat at your desk and carefully planned out your letters. Of course you weren't 100% sure that you were going to go forward with it, but it was nice to pour your feelings out onto the paper in front of you. Hours and hours passed as you expressed your emotions and went into detail about how a certain person affected your life. And then it came to Alex. That blunt boy with the blonde hair and septum piercing, the boy that would play his guitar for hours and hours on end, the one who stood up for himself and others. The one you loved. You read his letter over and over again, making sure that there were no errors, that was until you felt your salty tears begin to pour out of your eyes and on to the paper that contained your heart. 'Today was the day' you thought to yourself. Today was the day that you would end your life. You didn't know how the pain had gotten this severe, but that didn't matter, all that mattered was that you couldn't handle it, the constant aching and the crying. You couldn't say that this was just from the break up, but you had to admit that it was a big part of it, despite how stupid it sounded. You carefully folded the letter into an envelope and packed it into your pocket. Of course you had written one for the rest of your family but you couldn't bare to give it straight to them and tell them to open it 'when it's time.' You could barely face them at all. You had collected all things related to Alex and got closure the way they did in movies, you threw everything into a box, his hoodies, your pictures, the cards he got bought you, things to remind you of your first date and the promise ring that he had bought you for your birthday.

"I promise to love you forever, my ass" you mumbled before running down the stairs with the letter and box held closely to your chest.

"I'm just going to Alex's house for a little bit, I love you!" You called out to your family. Your eyes began to sting and yet again tears threatened to spill.

"Okay, keep in touch, we worry so much! I love you too!" Your mum (or mom) called back. You couldn't take it, you felt guilty for what you were about to do but you had made up your mind and there was no going back. You closed the door before getting in your car and driving

When you had finally reached Alex's house you placed the box on his doorstep and the letter on top. You knocked on his door and walked back into your car, preparing yourself for what came next. You carefully saw the door handle twist before an angered Alex opened the door. You shook your head before driving off to the only place that had came into your mind, the small 'beach' that Alex had taken you to on your second date. No one bothered to go there either because it wasn't a place you would go for parties or because they didn't even know it had existed. It was surrounded by cliffs and rocks which you and Alex had found exciting as it was your 'safe place.' You wiped the few tears from your cheeks and got out of you car. The cold air immediately nipped at your face as you hid your face in your fluffy hood. You buried your hands into you pockets and walked along the rocky paths to the cliffs. It was spring weather that day, not too warm but not too cold. The colour had began to show in the grass and the leaves began to grow on the trees. You sat yourself down if the grass and closed your eyes.

Alex's POV

I heard a knock at my door and I groaned. I wiped my eyes and left my dark room, it wasn't the same without y/n. I couldn't tell if she cared enough when I had broken up with her. 'Maybe it was for the best' I kept repeating to myself. That was until I opened the door and saw y/ns car driving off just as I opened the door. I looked down to see a box and a letter with my name on it. I grabbed it and ran back up to my room, grabbing my glasses and studying the words carefully. That's when my heart began to race and tears stung my eyes.

'I loved you Alex Standall, you. You taught me that there was something special in this fucked up society. You taught me that there was another side to life that I never knew existed.. you showed me how it felt to be loved. Or so I thought. You were the one thing that brought me happiness and then you left me with no warning. Now I can't help but think that I'm not good enough for you, that I don't deserve you. And for that reason, I'm about to do what I have planned to do for weeks. You won't have to face me anymore, won't have to have me on your back.. It took me weeks to realise but I finally get it now, And for that reason I hope you're happy. I hope you find someone that makes you as happy as you made me. I understand why you thought it wasn't working and I forgive you. I'm sorry for not being the person you wanted.

I love you..

~ Y/N

I almost choked at her words. They reminded me so much of my own. I rummaged through my desk searching for the letter that I had wrote for her around 2 weeks ago. Her words were dripping in sadness, just like my own. That's when it hit me. She was going to.. to kill herself! All because of me. The only reason I had broken up with her in the first place was because I was depressed, I was planning on committing suicide and I knew that I couldn't put her through it. I thought I was doing the right thing, turns out it made it worse, and now I can't forgive myself. I grabbed my keys before running to my car and starting the engine. I drove hastily to y/ns house, tears drenched my cheeks as I repeated the same phrase over and over.

'Please don't be too late' I choked. I was crying hysterically at this point and I just wanted to know that she was safe. I finally reached her house before running to their door and entering the house, not bothering to knock.

"Alex, honey?" Mrs (last name) called.

"Is y/n here?" I almost screamed.

"What? No? She said she was going to yours?!" She panicked. I mentally kicked myself before running back out of the house and into my car.

"I'm sorry mrs (last name) I need to find y/n!" I cried. There was only one other place that I imagined y/n going to, and that was the small beach I had taken her to on our Second date.

'Of course she'd go there!' I mentally screamed.

'There's cliffs, oh my god, she's going to jump' I didn't even try to contain my tears, they just kept coming and I swear that my car would've been flooded by the time I got to the beach. Minutes felt like hours before I finally reached there, I didn't bother to turn the engine off, I just needed to find her. That's when I saw her, lying peacefully on the grass.

You again •

You were so intrigued by the situation. How clichè, you thought to yourself. The teenaged girl feels so depressed when the heartthrob breaks her hears that it drives her to suicide. You thought to yourself, it sounds so stupid now that you think of it. But there was no turning back. You were beginning to relax before you heard a familiar voice.

"Y/n" the voice croaked. You immediately jumped up and edged closer to the end of the cliff.

'Fuck off, Alex' you shouted. He tried to take a step closer before you took one step backwards. You stared deeply at the broken boy in front of you, tears streamed his cheeks and his eyes were blood shot, his lips were trembling and you could tell that the cold weather was just adding to the sadness. This boy in front of you, is symmetrical to the way you were a week ago, completely broken, you wanted to run back into his arms so badly and kiss him with the passion you once had, but that was gone. Besides, the break up wasn't the only reason you were in the situation you were in at the moment.

'Y/N, I'm begging you, don't do this. Just listen to me.. please!' He sobbed as you edged further away.

'No!' He screamed but he knew better than to come closer, either way, he was frozen in terror.

'I love you' you smiled before letting the calmness of the waves fill your ears. You took a deep breath before lifting your arms and taking a step, your last step.

"OH MY GOD!" You heard Alex shriek, his screaming and crying began to fade as the serenity of the waves blocked your mind.
