《Agent 13 (Book 1)》37. Let's Party

"Testing, testing, one two three-"
"Devin shut up." We all chorus at once. Our voices echoing through the earpieces.
"What? I was just checking to make sure they were working." He grumbles.
"Oh is that what you were doing?" Jason starts. "Cause last time I checked you already checked them at the house, on the car ride over, before we walked through the door, and now you claim to be checking again."
"He's waiting for Thirteen to reply," Chase says, I can see him roll his eyes from where I stand on the other end of the ballroom.
"Devin, she said she wasn't going to be on comms," I mutter quietly as people pass by me. I shrug off my suit jacket and pass it to one of the waiters, rolling my sleeves up to my elbows. "Where even is she?" I question.
"Just because she and Zack left early to get here doesn't mean we're going to be seeing them right away." Chase states. "Where's Jason?"
"I'm walking in right now."
I turn towards the door to see him walking in with some random girl on his arm, as soon as he walks in he releases her arm and turns towards me, walking over.
"This is going to be fun." He mutters, leaning against the wall next to me.
"That's one word for it." Thirteen's voice sounds off.
"I thought you were staying off comms," I state.
"I'll be off comms later, like when Tony actually makes an appearance." She says. "You see him yet?"
I glance around discreetly, noticing Chase, Jason, and Devin doing the same.
"Nope, he's not here yet," Chase says.
"Let me know if you see him." She replies.
"Where exactly are you?" I question, looking around for her.
"I'm entering the room now."
I glance around quickly, looking for her and I feel my breath catch in my throat when I see her. I hear Jason choke on his water next to me.
She's walking through the crowd, arm linked with Zack's, wearing a light blue dress embellished with rhinestones and a large slit going down the middle. I feel my jaw drop open unconsciously.
Her hair is left down, cascading down her back and shoulders, a large rhinestone clip holding it out of her face. She's wearing just enough makeup to make her unrecognizable to anyone who doesn't know her, and the fake black-rimmed glasses sit on her nose.
"Close your mouths, you're going catch flies." She mutters sarcastically through the earpiece. I snap my mouth shut.
"When did you get fashion sense other than, black, black, and more black?" Devin questions.
"When did you get a black eye?" She snaps quietly.

"I don't have a-oh I get it, you're threatening me." He says thoughtfully.
"Tony just walked in," Chase announces and we all turn towards the door.
I hear Devin let out a cackle. "Let's party."
"I couldn't agree more." I can practically hear the smile in her voices as she speaks.
I watch as she and Zack walk right up to Tony. She extends her hand after Zack introduces her and shakes Tony's hand, avoiding eye contact with him. I listen to the conversation between the three of them through her earpiece.
"Pleasure to meet you, Mr. Martin." She says, her voice sickening sweet. "Zack has told me so much about you. It's just so good to finally put a face to the name." She gushes.
"All good things I hope." He replies, his tone light and airy as if he's completely at ease. "And please call me Tony, Miss..."
"Adrianna." She replies simply.
Zack clears his throat. "Well if you'll excuse us Dad, I'd like to finish introducing Adrianna to the rest of the guests."
"Oh, of course," Tony responds. "It was nice meeting you Adrianna, and I'm so glad my son has finally found someone who makes him happy."
"Oh stop Mr. Mart-Tony. The pleasure is all mine." I look over and watch as he walks away from them.
I see the fake smile she had on drop from her face and she fake gags. Zack laughs at her, throwing an arm over her shoulder.
"Go mingle." He orders and I watch as she turns her head towards him, scowling at him.
"Not freaking happening." She growls. "In case you haven't noticed, I'm getting death glares from most of the girls in this room, and lustful looks from most of the guys. Unless you want a repeat of the night of the bonfire I'm not going anywhere."
He laughs. "Yes, but I do believe the angry looking agent in the corner would like to speak with you since he hasn't taken his eyes off you since you walked through the door."
I see her head snap up and her eyes meet mine. Zack shoves her forwards and she nearly trips, turning back to glare at him, before finally walking over to me.
"Dance?" I ask, holding out my hand as soon as she's close enough. She just nods in response, placing her hand in mine.
"You look absolutely beautiful," I whisper.
"Thank-you." She mutters quietly, occasionally glancing around.
"Thirteen," I whisper and she brings her eyes up to meet mine. I take a deep breath. "We want you on the team, permanently."
I feel her tense up. "No." She says simply.
"I really wasn't asking you," I reply. "We all talked about it...a lot actually, and we want you to join our team."

"I said no."
"Why?"
She lets out a breath of air. "Believe me, it would be better for everyone if I wasn't on your team."
"Thirteen-"
"I said no Cody. I'm not going to be on your team. I'm not going to put your lives at risk.
"What risk? We're agents, there are always risks in our line of work. We're never truly safe. We live with constantly having to look over our shoulders anywhere we go." I argue.
She sighs. "Cody...it's just, not a good idea."
"What do I have to do?"
"Excuse me?"
"What do I have to do to convince you to join the team?"
"There's nothing you can do-"
"I'll stop being an idiot!" Devin shouts through the earpiece, cutting her off.
I see her smile slightly while I curse out Devin for interrupting.
I stop dancing and grab both her hands in mine. "Please Thirteen," I mumble. "We want you on the team."
"They do, or you do?"
"Both."
I watch her let out a resigned sigh. "If I don't die or get lost by the end of this mission, then yes. I'll join your team the minute we get back to headquarters."
I smile and pull her in for a hug, she seems startled at first but still wraps her arms around me.
"No PDA." Devin chirps.
"Devin, so help me if you interrupt one more time I'll-" I'm cut off as Thirteen pulls my head down to her and presses her lips softly against mine.
She pulls away after a few moments. "How's that for PDA Devin?" She asks as she turns and walks over to Zack.
"You two sicken me." He grumbles. "I take it back, I don't want her on the team anymore."
I laugh and so does Chase, Jason just mutters something unintelligible under his breath with a smile on his face.
I watch her as she goes up to Zack, who's smirking and says something quietly to her causing her to narrow her eyes. He laughs and she kicks him in the shin. I hear him cursing at her through the earpieces.
I watch as she pulls her phone out of her small purse, before turning to Zack.
"Sorry, I have to take this." I hear her say and watch as she removes her earpiece from her ear and walks off, placing the phone up to her ear.
"Well, that took a lot of convincing," Chase says as he walks up next to me.
"Well, she's going to be on the team now."
"I think that'll take a while to get used to." He says thoughtfully. "But it'll be fun."
"That's true." It's silent for a while as I watch her return and talk to Zack.
Chase speaks up suddenly. "I'm thinking of giving her the leader position." He announces.
I choke on the drink in my hands. "What?"
He just shrugs. "She's better than me, has more experience...and I think she'd get along with us better. I mean, it's worked so far with this mission. I think it would be better for the team."
"If you want to go ahead, I got nothing against it. But ultimately it's your choice Chase,"
"So don't screw it up," Jason mutters.
"Thanks Jason," Chase retorts sarcastically.
"Just glad I could be helpful."
"I'll kill him for you Chase,"
"No Devin." Both me and Chase chorus together.
"You're all no fun." He sulks.
"Thirteen still hasn't put her comm back in?" Chase asks me, changing the subject.
"No, not yet," I respond. "And I don't think she's going to."
"Zack keeps looking over at you," Devin says.
I look over at Zack and Thirteen, both are talking to each other, but as Devin's pointed out, he keeps glancing over at me.
I watch Thirteen snap her fingers in front of Zack's face and he looks back at her. They continue talking.
I watch as Zack holds his hands up in surrender, a devious smile on his face as he looks at her before quickly sparing a glance my way. I stare right back at him and I see his smile widen.
"What's up with him?" Jason questions.
"I don't know," I reply. "But I don't think I like it."
"You think he's up to something?"
"Hard to tell."
"He's an idiot," Chase mutters. "As if he'd actually be able to come up with something."
I narrow my eyes at him and notice Thirteen turning around to look at what he's looking at. She glances at me and I see confusion flitter across her face before she turns back to him.
He leans down and whispers something in her ear. Never taking his eyes off me.
I see her shake her head and rub her temple as if he's giving her an imaginary headache...or it could very well be real.
He grins like the Cheshire cat as he looks at her and I watch her cross her arms over her chest most likely glaring at him.
He says something else to her and looks up at me again, winking at me, I glare back at him.
What the hell is he up to?
I get my answer as he does the last thing I'd ever expect.
He places his hands on her hips and pulls her towards him, slamming his lips down on hers.
I don't care what she says about him being on our side...I'm going to kill him.
