《Agent 13 (Book 1)》29. You knew

"Where's Thirteen?" I hear Cody ask from inside the house, I continue to scroll through my phone, debating whether or not to call Zack so we can meet up...and to find out whether or not my cover's blown.
"Why?" I hear Devin ask, his tone of voice slightly smug. "Want to continue where you left off?" I hear something break.
"Outside." I hear Chase reply, clearly trying to stop the fight before it starts. "And what is Devin talking about?"
I hear Cody groan before the back door opens. I look up from my phone to him, not meeting his eyes.
"What's up?" I ask, not exactly knowing what else to say, though he doesn't seem to care.
"Ninety-one's at the door for you." I furrow my eyebrows.
"Why?" I question. He gives me a confused look.
"You tell me, I thought you called him."
"No." I shake my head and slip my phone into my pocket as I get to my feet and make my way back into the house.
"Hey, Thirteen." Cody starts. "About last night-"
"We'll talk about this later Cody." I interrupt him and open the front door. My eyes immediately connecting with Ninety-one's.
"What's going on?" I ask, Cody standing right behind me.
"Can we talk?"
"I'm listening."
He eyes Cody. "Alone." He adds. I glance back at Cody slightly before stepping out from the doorway and closing the door behind me.
"What's wrong." He runs his hand through his hair, before gesturing to his car.
"Take a ride with me?" He asks.
"Yeah. Give me a second." I open the door again and step into the house grabbing my jacket off the coat rack.
"Where are you going?" Cody questions.
"Relax, I'll be back within the hour," I reply before leaving the house once again. I hop into the passenger side as Ninety-one starts the car. It's silent for a little bit.
"I'm going to get fired for telling you this, but I figure you have a right to now."
"What is it?"
"There was a break-in at the agency last night." He says.
"What? What'd they take?" I question, panic setting in. If someone was able to get into the agency and get any of our things...that wasn't good.
"Files, nothing else."
"Files, which files?"
"Mostly mission files." He pauses as he glances at me for a split second. "Your mission files."
"What?" I say in shock. "How in the hell would they even know which ones to take? All mine were signed by a different team."
"We don't know." He answers back solemnly. "But your mission files weren't the only ones taken. Several of Delta 2's were stolen as well." I run a hand through my hair. "And." I turn to look at him. "Their personal files were taken as well."

I slam my fist into the car door. "Garrett," I mutter.
"Kind of figured. But we have no way of knowing for sure."
"The cameras didn't catch anything." He shakes his head.
"Thirteen," he pulls the car over for a minute. "These people aren't messing around anymore. They're going to kill your new team. They have everything they need to find them. Even though Cody's house isn't listed under agency files, how long do you think it'll take them to find you? You need to find a new place to stay, and fast."
"I'll get on that. I take it Zero didn't want me to know?"
"Yeah." He replies.
"Great." I open the car door and begin to exit. His hand grabs hold of my wrist before I can leave.
"Where are you going?"
"I need to think, to clear my head," I answer. "Don't worry about me I'll be fine, go report back to Zero before he gets suspicious."
"Thirteen." I turn to look at him. "You need to let them know."
"I know," I reply. I turn and begin to walk away, him passing me as he drives by. I let out a sigh as ponder over what to do next.
I should tell them about this, but I don't know if I can. I don't want to cause panic or paranoia. Maybe I won't tell them.
I make it to a small park and take a seat on one of the benches, resting my arms on my knees. What am I going to do...of course there's also the matter of Cody that I have yet to address.
When did my life become so unbelievably complicated? A car horn breaks me out of my train of thought.
I turn to watch as the driver side door opens, and Zack steps out. Should've known. He begins walking towards me.
"What are you stalking me now? Cause I hate stalkers."
"If I was, you'd never know." He retorts. I roll my eyes lightly at him. "What are you doing out here?"
"Just needed to think...in peace...alone."
"Wow, thanks for making me feel so welcome."
"You're not." He gives me a deadpan look.
"You want to grab something to eat?" He asks, his eyes begging me to say yes, but at the same, something else flashes in them.
I shrug. "I don't see why not."
"Great." He says. "Why don't you drive, so you can pick the place."
I raise my eyebrows in surprise. "You want me, to drive your car." I clarify.
"Uh yeah, that's what I said."
"You are so going to regret that," I say jokingly. He glares at me. "Kidding?" I shrug.
I stand from my seat and make my way ahead of him to the car, slipping into the driver's seat. I open the glove compartment before he gets in the car. I quickly slam it closed as the door opens.

He slides into the seat next to me and I start the car, pulling out of the parking lot.
"So," I start. "Where to? I only know of a few places out here, seeing as I haven't been here all that long. I know there's a pizza place, and a Chinese restaurant, but that's about it." I finish.
I hear a familiar clicking noise. I glance over at the gun in his hands. "You're going to take the next left." He states...as if I'll actually listen.
I smirk. "So Chinese then?" I suggest innocently...as I pass the turn.
I see the hard look on his face falter. I laugh slightly.
"You didn't really think that just because you point a gun to my head that I'll do what you say." He glares but says nothing in reply. "You're not going to shoot me. Not while I'm driving." I see his jaw clench. I did kind of just dare him.
He pulls the trigger but no bullet, no sound comes out over than a clicking noise. I smirk as I hold out my hand, the bullets resting in my palm.
"You knew." He growls. I just nod. "How?"
"The moment you asked me to drive your car, I knew something was up. No guy just lets the girl drive their car without a fight, well...no guy like you that is."
"Well good thing I brought extra." I don't react as he begins to reload the gun with the extra bullets he brought. Smart guy.
He aims the gun at me again, putting it a little too close for comfort. I open the sunroof window. I watch from the corner of my eye as his finger tightens around the trigger...I strike.
I grab hold of the gun and shove it backward, the end of it slamming into his face, he lets go as his hands move to his face. I grab hold of the gun firmly and toss it out the sunroof.
"I'm beginning to believe that your brother got all the brains in the family," I say, keeping my eyes on the empty road in front of me.
I see his jaw clench from the corner of my eye...unfortunately, I don't see his hands shoot out to grab the steering wheel until it's too late.
All I can do is brace myself for the impact.
An insistent beeping wakes me, more annoying than my alarm clock. My hand swings out to shut it off or break it, I really don't care which. Only my hand doesn't make it very far...something is restraining it.
"I wouldn't do that if I were you." A familiar voice says...more like taunts.
My eyes open, only to meet blinding lights and white walls. I quickly close them before opening them again, trying to adjust to the bright lights, and when they do I see her.
She sits in the chair next to me, playing a game on her phone, her legs crossed and propped up on the edge of the hospital bed I'm currently sitting in. Music plays lowly from the phone in her hands.
I try to lunge at her, to attack her, only to get pulled back into the bed. My eyes travel to my wrists, which are handcuffed to sides of the bed, and my legs strapped down. I glare at her, she doesn't spare me a glance.
"Great isn't it?" She asks, eyes still focused solely on her phone. "I just flash my badge, make up some bogus story, and they allow me to restrain you." She sighs dramatically "Ah, the perks of being me."
I thrash in my bed, before finally resting back against the pillows, the music, even though it's low, giving me a headache.
"Could you turn that off?" I ask through gritted teeth. She finally looks up from her phone to me.
"What?"
"The music."
"Sure." She replies, much to my surprise. I hear the music shut off and I close my eyes...only to hear it start up again, this time much louder.
"Shut it off!" I practically yell as I cover my ears with my hands, feeling like someone is banging on my head with a hammer.
"You have a minor concussion." She says. "Amongst other things." I glare at her. The door opens.
"Liar." I retort. Though I have no idea whether or not it's true.
I see a nurse walk in and looks from me to her, a horrified look plastered on her face. "Young lady!" She looks up at her.
"Yes?" She asks in a voice that clearly says, 'I'm not innocent but let's pretend I am'.
"This young man has a concussion." She shoots me a smug look. "I'm going to have to ask you to turn that music off." The nurse says.
It's my turn to shoot her a smug look, she just smirks back at me. A feeling of dread sweeps over me. Crap what is she going to do?
I see her remove her wallet from her back pocket and open it, flashing what I'm going to assume is her badge to the nurse. I'm screwed.
"You need to leave." She states. "Unless of course, you want me to charge you with interfering in a government investigation." The authority in her voice startles me slightly.
I watch the nurse pale slightly before turning and exiting the room, closing the door behind her, muttering her apologies.
"I'm going to kill you." I hiss, and she just gives me a blank stare in return.
"You might try." She pulls a dagger from her boot, letting it catch the light. She points it at me.
"You and I, need to have a long talk." She states as she starts towards me.
Somehow I don't think there's going to be much talking involved.
