《Agent 13 (Book 1)》12. Yeah well get in line

I try to tune him out as he continues talking, hardly ever taking a breath. He must really enjoy the sound of his own voice. the boys remain silent and chained to the wall, watching the boy on the floor, none of them making a move or sound that indicates they know him, or even who he is.
I feel a stare burning into the side of my head so I turn only to face Cody. The look on his face says it all, you betrayed us.
Please stupid have some faith in me will ya?
I hold my finger up to my lips as I stare back at him before dragging it across my neck, making it clear I'll kill him if he says anything.
His face turns to one of confusion as if asking, how in the hell are you standing there without Tony watching. I give him a look that clearly says I'm the best and he narrows his eyes at me. I shrug.
"Now next question." I hear Tony say. "Where is Thirteen?" he asks.
Cody's eyes find mine again and I give him a warning look. "Don't know." he finally says.
"Oh really. I don't believe you," he replies.
"Why do you want Thirteen so badly anyway?" Devin asks.
"Her and I have unfinished business, and I'd like to kill her myself." I see Cody give me a questioning glance out of the corner of my eyes, I pretend I can't see him.
"Yeah well get in line," Chase mutters. I glare at him, but it's wasted as he is still as oblivious as the other two that I'm standing in this room in plain sight.
I'm buying them all glasses when we get out of this.
I watch Tony aim the gun at the boy, "Last chance where is Thirteen?"
Cody looks at me again and I shake my head slowly he looks from me to the boy then back to me. I raise my hand up slowly motioning for him the calm down. He gives me an incredulous look, I pull my dagger from my boot.
"Answer the question," Tony growls out. well someone's annoyed. "3," oh look he's counting down.
"We don't know." Chase states.
"2,"
"Are you deaf?" oh my gosh, shut up Devin.
"1," his fingers begin to tighten around the trigger, Cody's eyes dart to me. Now if Zero wouldn't kill me, I'd let this kid get shot at least once, serves him right, unfortunately, Zero would shoot me if I let and "innocent" get shot. Devil child ain't that innocent.
My arm swings out and the dagger lodges itself into the throat of the guy next to me, I pull my arm back and throw two knives into two more of the guards across the room. All eyes turn towards me as I back up all guns trained on me, and stand in front of the boy on the floor.

My eyes connect with Tony's and I see him giving me a questioning look. I hold the dagger up so he can see.
"In all honesty, I'd be shocked if you did recognize me." I say, "I mean come on, it has been what four years. Still, I expected more from you Tony, maybe your eyesight is finally going."
"Thirteen." his jaw his clenched and his teeth grind together. "Well, I must admit you have changed a lot."
"In more ways than one."
"I don't believe that. Cause deep down I think you're still that same girl with family issues. I'm sure your brother would be proud." I feel anger rise up in me. "If he could remember that is." I lounge. My vision red.
A gun goes off and I fall backward. The idiot didn't even realize I'm wearing a damn bulletproof vest. I jumped up quickly only to see that Tony had fled leaving me to deal with his remaining minions. Joy oh joy.
I killed three...there's still twelve left...how do all these people fit in this damn room?
My eyes instantly spot the key to boys' chains on the table in the back of the room, only problem is actually getting to it. I really need to split these guys up.
My eyes dart around to room looking for anything and everything that can help me right now.
I turn to the boys as I and idea hits me. "I'll be right back," I say before turning and bolting out the door.
This better work.
***
"She left us."
"You do realize she said she was coming back right."
"Does it look like she's coming back? She's been gone for a least an hour, we're still chained here, that kid is still on the floor, and I'm starting to believe he's napping."
"Idiots," I mutter as I continue to work on the last screw. So I had been gone a long time big deal.
I would have been back sooner but it took forever to lose those guys, and I'm pretty sure they're going to be back here any minute.
I finally get the last screw out and carefully remove the grate. One of the only good things about this warehouse is the large ventilation systems here. I grip the edge of the vent and swing myself out.
"I said I'd be right back." I hop off the table I landed on and grab the key. WhyTony decided it was a good idea to leave it here, I'll never know.
"About damn time, now get us out of here."
"That's no way to talk to your rescuer Cody." I chide. He glares at me.
"Thirteen." he growls out.
"Cody." I mimic. "To be fair you took one look at me and decided I betrayed you. So putting that into consideration...you're getting out last."

"What?"
"I don't think I stuttered." I walk over to the boy on the floor. "And you I have half a mind to shoot myself Ryan." I remove the blindfold and duck tape.
"I'm sorry ok," he grumbles.
"Next time don't follow me." I order as I cut through the ropes binding his hands.
"Wait a minute you know this kid?" Chase questions.
"Seems like she knows everyone," Cody mutters I turn my icy glare on him.
"He's an agent," I respond to Chase.
"He's an agent?" he repeats, disbelief evident in his tone.
"He's in training." I turn to him and gives me a nervous smile. "I'm making sure Zero has you on lockdown for the next six months."
"Hey-"
"How do know you Tony?" Cody asks as I move to unlock Devin's chains.
"Long story."
"So shorten it. I don't get how if he knew you he didn't recognize you. Start explaining."
"Well in case you weren't already aware, there's this miraculous invention known as hair dye, that and this thing called aging." I finish unlocking Devin and he takes the key from me, beginning to unlock Jason.
"So your hair is dyed." Cody clarifies.
"Well, we have a bright spark here folks."
"So what's your real hair color?" Devin asks as he moves on to Chase.
"Do you really think I'm going to answer that question? Now hurry up we got to get out of here before those guys get back."
"I thought you killed them," Jason says.
"Yeah totally me verses twelve of them in a cramped space, use your brain for just a minute here. But I did get you guys something." I climb back up onto the table and reach into the vent.
I toss the five bulletproof vests onto the floor. "You're welcome."
"Who'd you kill to get these."
"Who do you freaking think Cody?"
"You said you didn't kill any of them," Jason says.
"I never said that I simply said that I didn't kill all of them." I pause. "And there's now about triple."
"Triple guards?"
"No triple vests," I say sarcastically.
"Wow, Zero wasn't lying when he said you hate your new team." My head snaps in Ryan's direction.
"Stay out of this."
"I was just-"
"Zip it." I hiss, "Now come one we don't have all day. Actually, we only have about fifteen minutes."
"Why only fifteen minutes?" Cody asks.
"Cause that's about the time the detonators will go off."
"You set up bombs!"
"What do you think I've been doing for the past hour." Cody lets out a groan. "Quit your complaining and get those vests on asap. I'd really rather not be here when this place goes up in flames and smoke."
"Well whose fault would that be?"
"Yours, if you don't get moving."
"I hate you."
"The feeling's mutual. Now let's go."
I exit the room first with Chase behind me and Ryan behind him. I pull a gun from my waistband and pass it to Ryan.
"Try not to get killed," I say and hear him grumble under his breath. Something about how he's no the one trying to get killed. I ignore him
We begin to make our way out, following the series of hallways and turns.
"I think it's a little odd we aren't out yet." comes Cody's accusing tone.
"Well Cody would you like to lead the group out without getting us lost?" I ask sweetly. A gun goes off, the bullet hitting the wall next to me. Several more gunshots follow. "Run!" I yell out as Cody and Jason begin to return shots back at them.
I grab my phone from my pocket and scroll through it.
"You're seriously on your phone at a time like this!" it's getting easier and easier to ignore Cody.
I tap one of the apps and scroll down to the bottom of the page. I press down. An explosion goes off behind us as the tunnel around us begins to cave in.
"What the hell did you do? You said we had fifteen minutes!" Chase shouts.
"I lied." I respond, "The bombs go off whenever I want them to. I wanted to be out in fifteen minutes so I told you that so you could move faster."
"You're insane."
"So I've been told."
"I'm going to kill you," Cody grumbles.
"I wish you the best of luck with that," I reply.
I run up the staircase and push open the door at the top, entering the main area of the warehouse.
"So we were beneath the warehouse," Devin mutters to himself. I roll my eyes.
"Where's the door?" Jason asks.
"On the other side of these crates," I answer.
We round to corner, me in front and Devin in tow, the sounds of loading guns echo through the quiet warehouse.
Tony stands in front of us with several more of his goons standing next to him, machine guns in hand.
"Aw crap," Ryan mutters and I shoot a glare his way.
"Didn't think I'd let you out so easy did you?" he asks in a mocking tone. "Any last words?"
"See you in hell."
"It still smells in here."
Thanks Devin.

Ghostified City
‘Ghostified City’ is a post-dystopian sci-fi tale, set in a fading world that might be a future version of ours, running out on autopilot into oblivion. Adaman Yimmand is a simple robofactory operator in The City who's working with robots and machines every day. He doesn’t even realise that he might not have met another actual human being in years. Everything begins when he breaks his routine for once and enters a bar where he meets Evelith. This pesky other person does not let him go after he has had his -rather terrible- beer, because according to her actual humans are much rarer than he’s aware of. And from then on ‘the genie is out of the bottle and won’t get back in’, to use her words: Adaman meets more people, and gradually he has no choice but to accept that the reality of The City is not what he always thought it was, and to face the darkness of a fading humanity on the brink of self-inflicted extinction. Is there any hope left for him, and for his species? I have selected 'sexual content' and 'traumatising content' to be on the safe side, because there is a stripclub-like venue in the background of the story, and an almost-extinct humanity that has institutionalised suicide which might be disturbing to some. Apart from that it's not really a heavy 'adult' story.('Ghostified City' is my first long story in English as opposed to my native language Dutch, and an earlier version was published on my fiction blog 'Oranderra' until I stopped updating. This is a slightly altered version of the first series.)
