《When We Were Young [H.S.]》5. Wish You Were Here

Despite September not being too busy for Wednesday, she'd barely seen Harry throughout it. He'd flown to LA halfway through the month for both business and personal reasons for a couple of weeks, meanwhile she'd been attending early rehearsals with the rest of the band and going to a handful of meetings regarding the upcoming tour that was yet to be announced.
The last time she'd seen Harry was when he'd turned up on her doorstep the morning before leaving, coyly rocking back and forth on his heels as he'd held something behind his back, a grin stretching from one ear to the other plastered on his face.
"What's up with you?" she'd asked, unable to keep her own smile from appearing.
"Oh, nothing you know...I'm just stood in front of my favourite COVER STAR" he'd said excitedly, whipping the newest edition of Euphoria magazine around to her face, her own face staring back at her from the cover.
"You idiot" she'd laughed, letting him inside, though her smile didn't falter.
"Your first ever magazine cover AND it's a banger" he'd replied, looking down to the magazine with a smile.
"You don't think it's too...out there?" she'd asked, biting her lip as she tilted her head to stare at the cover image again.
The photoshoot, shot a day after her interview, had been a completely new experience to Wednesday but she'd loved every minute of it. Despite being slightly camera shy, she'd come into her own on the set, thanks to the female led team of photographers and stylists around her. They'd shot her in various fits, all of them stunning, but it was the last look that received a unanimous exclamation of love from the team, including her. Her dark hair had been curled reminiscent of a 40s style, with her makeup colourful but not overpowering. On her arms were long black sequinned silk gloves, but it was the clothing that really pulled it all together. She'd worn a bright green tulle skirt and top set that fell in layers, making her look like some type of rock princess. It was fabulously extravagant and feminine, whilst still remaining true to her personality. The look had been finished off with her holding her drumsticks in her hand.
The feedback from the fans had been overwhelmingly supportive and appreciative since the interview had been released—she'd gone onto Twitter when it had dropped, knowing she shouldn't care but still curious as to what people thought. She'd breathed a sigh of relief when she'd only seen positive messages and found herself a bit emotional at the outpour of love.
"Are you mad?" he'd asked incredulously, turning the magazine to his own face with pinched eyebrows. "You look amazing Wednesday."
She smiled back at him. "Thank you, I already knew that though. Just wanted to hear you say it" she'd joked sarcastically, turning around as she flicked her hair over her shoulder for dramatic effect.
"How sweet of you too" Harry begun, flicking through the magazine to the pages her interview was on. "Talking about how much you love me."
He'd grinned as she rolled her eyes. "Shut up, give me that."
"'I don't think I could imagine my life without Harry in it'" he quoted from the magazine, pushing Wednesday away with one arm as she attempted to grab it from him. "'He's the person I go to for everything and though we don't say it to each other very often, I'm grateful for him and everything he's done for me.'"
"Give me it here" Wednesday snarled, finally grabbing the magazine as he'd smiled at her with a shit eating grin.

"Who knew big, tough Wednesday Rose Green could be such a softie?" he'd said, grinning.
"Piss off" she'd replied, turning away.
She hadn't mentioned the Patrick message to him, or the various ones after that. It just wasn't worth discussing when nothing was going to come of it.
Despite her determination to eschew Daisy at first, she grew to find they had more in common than she originally thought. At rehearsals they'd started talking about their favourite films and tv shows, realising they both had a deep love for New Girl and Brooklyn 99. They'd also discovered their shared love of astrology and horoscopes, with Daisy proudly confirming she was a Scorpio.
Pushing herself out of her comfort zone, Wednesday had asked if she wanted to come for lunch with her and Sarah after the latest rehearsal, which she'd kindly accepted.
They chose a cute little café in Marylebone that Wednesday had been to before. The bare brick walls inside were lined with dozens of hanging plants and neon lights were dotted around the entire café, illuminating the turquoise velvet seats.
"So now that we're away from everyone else, how are you really finding the new job?" Sarah asked, smiling at Daisy as she sipped from the iced tea she ordered.
"It's been different from anything else I've experienced, but really fun actually. Everyone's been so lovely and welcoming" Daisy replied, stirring her latte.
"Is this the first time you've worked for an artist full time?"
"Yeah. Before getting this, I would sort of just be hired for one off gigs or to provide instrumentals or vocals."
"And what do you think of the boss man himself?" Sarah pressed, Wednesday smiling at the use of her favourite nickname for Harry.
"I was shocked at how friendly he was, right off the bat. It's quite intimidating at times, how easy it is to talk to him and feel like you've known him for years."
"That's Harry" Sarah laughed. "This one genuinely has known him for years though. 15 to be exact" she added, nodding in Wednesday's direction.
Daisy turned to her, a slight hint of shock in her expression. "You've known each other for 15 years?"
"Unfortunately, yes" Wednesday quipped, smiling at her own sarcasm.
"Did you meet in school or something?" Daisy asked, interested.
"Yeah" Wednesday answered, drinking her iced coffee. "Met at 10, best friends ever since."
"Wow, so you two must like, know everything about each other then?"
Wednesday laughed, folding her arms. "Pretty much, yeah. I know all of his deepest, darkest secrets and he knows mine. We could never end the friendship, we have too much dirt on each other."
"That's cool. And so you two have never..." Daisy asked, seemingly realising what she'd asked a moment later, her eyes widening as she leant back and put a hand over her mouth. "Sorry, that's way too personal for someone you've only known a few weeks!"
They both laughed in response, Wednesday clearing her throat as she felt a slight warmth to her cheeks. "It's fine, don't worry about it. And no, no, it's uh....we've never...just, no."
Sarah cocked her head to the side, shooting Wednesday a disbelieving look, a small smirk on her lips.
"I mean, that's not entirely true" Sarah mumbled, averting her gaze when Wednesday shot her a face of pure rage.
Daisy looked between them, confused as to what they were referring to. Sarah had done it now.
"Once," Wednesday began, sighing as if this was the last thing she wanted to be bringing up. "When we were 19ish, I'd just joined One Direction on the road, and we'd all gone to a nightclub in Amsterdam. Me and Harry got far too drunk and, um..."

"Passionately smooched" Sarah interjected with a nod.
Wednesday, whose mouth had opened at the sentence, leant over and pushed Sarah without much force.
"Sarah Jones, I'm gonna kill you" she muttered, shaking her head as Sarah smiled back at her with a devious glint in her eye.
Daisy, who'd eyed the whole interaction with a small grin, seemed to be sat waiting for some type of explanation.
"It wasn't like that, don't listen to anything Sarah says. We'd just had way waaay too much vodka and it sort of happened. The next day, we laughed it off and that was the end of that" Wednesday affirmed, shooting Sarah a glance that dared her to add anything else.
"I think that's quite common with best friends. I've kissed mine a few times" Daisy shrugged, sipping her drink.
Wednesday turned to Sarah, shooting her a 'told you so' expression that she waved off.
As they'd been served their food and Daisy and Sarah got into a discussion about their cats, Wednesday looked down to her phone, seeing 2 notifications.
can we grab a coffee one day to talk things over
I miss you x
She unintentionally groaned audibly as she opened the messages, another 2 in the long list he'd sent over the past few weeks, all of which she'd managed to ignore.
"Everything alright?" Sarah asked.
"It's just...Patrick" she replied tersely, rolling her eyes at Sarah who seemed to understand her frustration instantly.
Their breakup in April had been messy, with lots of arguments, bitter comments and jealousy bringing the two-year relationship to its knees for the last time.
She'd met Patrick in early 2017 at a bar in Kensington. Sat with her group of friends, she'd noticed him staring at her from where he sat with his own friends. She'd acknowledged he was good looking straight away—his short sandy blonde hair was swept to the side, whilst his piercing blue eyes and strong jawline really caught Wednesday's attention. But in true to herself fashion, she'd ignored his stares and nonchalantly refused his offer for a drink when he'd asked.
Despite her standoffish attitude, he'd persevered and by the end of the night, he'd got her number and a smile from her. Within weeks they'd gone on numerous dates and learnt everything there was to know about each other. She'd told him all about working for One Direction and Harry and he told her how he worked as a physiotherapist for a football club in London. He had 2 older brothers and had moved to London from Birmingham when he was 18 for uni and had never looked back. Only a year older than Wednesday, they'd found a lot of common interests and quickly began dating, even with the dilemma of her leaving for Harry's first tour soon after.
"If you don't want the whole long-distance thing, you can just say it" Wednesday had said to him as she lay curled in his arms in bed one day, only a week away from leaving for tour.
He'd traced circles into her arm, pulling her closer. "You're worth waiting for."
Though he hadn't been her first boyfriend, he'd been the first one to make her fall as hard as she did. In every other relationship, she'd managed to keep an air of cool about her, not letting her walls down too far so that when it inevitably came to an end, she could walk away unscathed.
Patrick however, had found his way over some of those walls and as a result, had left her heart bruised and sore, something she chided herself for every day. It made her feel weak to know that even 4 months later, she hadn't recovered. Not fully. Late at night, when she lay in bed and listened to the distant buzz of the city through her open window, she wondered if that was what he was hearing too.
But as she stared down at the abundance of messages, feeling a pain in her chest that made her want to reply, she wouldn't give in. They had broken up for a reason; it wasn't working. To go back would be unproductive and unfair to herself.
She began to type back, her eyebrows pinched as she felt a weight in her heart.
She looked back up to Sarah who was staring at her with slight concern. Putting on her most convincing smile, she put her phone back on the table facing down and tucked back into her food.
Later that week, at the last rehearsal of the month, she walked into the room and saw Harry sat with a guitar in his hand, shocked at his return.
"I thought you were back in a couple of days?" she asked, sitting opposite him as she crossed her legs.
"Nah, thought I was of more use here. Plus, I know you all would have missed me too much, obviously" he replied, smirking as he strummed on the guitar strings.
"Obviously" she repeated, not admitting that she had in fact missed him. A lot. "Anything fun happen while you were there?"
"Nope" he smiled, a cheeky glint in his eye telling Wednesday something fun had definitely happened.
Their first rehearsal as a full band went as well as it possibly could have done, and they all came away feeling ready for October and their hectic work schedule to begin once again.
"Right, who wants to grab some dinner and drinks?" Harry asked the team once they were packed up for the day.
Adam kindly refused, needing to get back to his family, but Sarah, Mitch and Daisy all agreed. Turning to Wednesday, the only one who hadn't answered, he raised his eyebrows.
"You coming Wednesday?"
Throwing her bag over her shoulder, she took a few steps toward the exit.
"Not tonight thanks. Just want to relax at home and watch crappy tv if I'm honest."
"You sure?" Harry asked, a hint of disappointment in his face at her refusal.
"I'm sure" she replied, saying her goodbyes and leaving before she could let him change her mind.
After two tube rides and a 10-minute walk, she was back in the comfort of her own flat. Taking off her jeans and top, she groaned at the comfort of the shorts and tee she put on instead. It was only 8 at night, but it was already pitch-black outside.
Pouring herself a glass of red wine, she decided to sit in her favourite spot in the whole house. Just outside of the kitchen window, there was a long ledge overlooking the whole of the city. She sat down, careful not to drop the wine as she took in the city lights and buzz of noise, the fresh air always an instant relief.
After a few sips, she opened up her phone, going back to Instagram. Daisy's story had popped up; clicking on it, she could see they were having rounds of cocktails, but she didn't feel like she was missing out. As she was looking at the stories of other people she followed, a private message popped up again.
I'm not ready to give up on this and I know you're not either. Just talk to me Wednesday, please
She reread the message multiple times; her eyebrows pinched together in thought.
Looking back up to the city lights and watching the faintest twinkle of stars behind them, she wondered why her life was never easy.
