《The Memorial Day Murders》Chapter 38 : Ambush

Standing on the porch Jack, Dom and I watched as the SUV backed away from cabin, flanked by one of the following Vipers in the air. "Come on, it's time to work." Jack said, ushering us in. I stood unmoving on the porch, silently praying for their safety. I followed them soon later when the SUV disappeared and the Viper's blades were barely heard. We all walked into a room outfitted with the latest tech Jack calls it the communications room.
A long table occupied the center of the room where our teammates are seated and they stood up to greet us but we simply waved at them to sit down. "Okay, let's continue." I say. "So far we know that Sayyid Bin Masir has a twin brother we have no idea on his identity, and we have no idea on his location."
"Isa's right, what we only know is that Bin Masir could be the one hiring Jean Pierre to kill the retired British soldier." Gerry said. "Plus the silencer used as part of the murder weapon."
"Which I have tracked to Switzerland." Jay said.
"Isa, what if Sayyid Bin Masir is tracking us through our technology?" Lincoln asked. "I mean, Jean Pierre wouldn't have been that coincidential when he killed the soldier."
"You're saying that he's using SIGINT to track us?" Gerry asked. "Was it the time when you called the former president to tell him about that mishap?"
"I don't know Gerry, but I'll keep that in mind." I said, leaning back.
"If we can determine that your theory is true, we might be able to devise a plan to lure him here and take him down." his cousin, Dominic, chimed in. "Could be our last hope if we want to stop this."

"We have to be sure that this twin brother exists. We can't risk to be fooled by body doubles." I said.
"Agreed." Gerry said.
"Jack," I begun. "does the CIA have any intel on the twin brother Bin Masir claims to have?"
"I'm afraid so ma'am." he said. "A Yakub Bin Masir."
"Was he a terrorist? Acting as his brother's decoy?"
"DNI Eckhart confirmed that he's an Iraqi soldier, dropped off the grid when he was found working in a faction determined to expel our forces from Iraq."
"What about Sayyid? He's Iraqi too, right?"
"You're correct Commander Carter." the former CIA agent replied. "They were present when Desert Storm happened."
"My father fought in the Gulf War Jack, you think..." I said.
"Even though his platoon is not involved I still predict that he would be targetted."
"Where did they go?" I asked.
"He would be safe in the White House." he replied.
"So, about this Yakub guy," Gerald begun. "How did the both of them got involved in this shit?"
"We can't be sure but we know that they were radicalized by the Taliban."
"And Sayyid became one of their top commanders." Jay concluded.
"When Burqa called in to notify the disappearance of your platoon the CIA went to work immediately and came to the conclusion that he could be responsible for the ambush."
"But Isabella survived despite the gunfire." Olivia pointed out. "That's one hell of a survival story."
"But they attacked the ruins between two or three days." I said. "I'd thought I would've been dead until LGF saved me with a squad of soldiers."
"And the CIA notified the Defense Department about the findings, nobody was prepared when Burqa called in with the story."

"But enough of me already." I said. "Concentrate on our problem right now."
"Bin Masir is a tough target to track, the IC is doing so as we speak. If he can track the team by using SIGINT he could've found our location already." Jack said.
"If the White House can track the Gulfstream, sure can Bin Masir." James added. "It won't be long until-" before he could finish his sentence sirens started to blare wildly, indicating an intruder, or multiple intruders. "What-?"
"Check the cameras, map the security grid out." Jack ordered. "Security breach!" Jay fired up the computer and we watched as a military jeep rammed past the security gate and hurried down the dirt road. "Everybody, get to the panic room now!" he ordered. Running out from the room we ran towards the panic room located between the kitchen and the door leading to the basement but gunfire erupted almost immediately, bullets smashing against the bulletproof windows.
"Everybody down!" Timothy shouted while shielding me with his body as we promptly ducked low and hurried to the panic room. The door locks installed on the panic room doors immediately locks itself when we entered and the lights turned on, revealing the panic room in full but not a normal one. The room was outfitted with weapons and ammunitions plus stun and smoke grenades. "Stay behind me madam!" he shouted as he reached for an M4 carbine rifle.
"Was that Bin Masir?!" Dom shouted, taken off guard by the sudden attack.
"I think so! See, I knew it!" James shouted.
"Fight or flight, and Bin Masir forced us to fight." I said, trying my best to calm down. "We need to make sense of the problem outside." Jack activated his tablet, scrolling past several security feeds as the gunfire continues outside.
"The locks are automatic, assume they didn't bring in a hacker or a mini bomb to blow it up." Jack explained. "Okay, Bin Masir's leading the charge with... oh shit."
"What now?!"
"Twenty guys max. Yeah, I'm gonna need to head out as well." Jack said, taking a submachine gun.
"Yeah? I'm coming too." I said, taking a M16 rifle. "It's everybody's fight now."

A Sinner's Eden
The Earth of the future is united under a single government, but not all things are well. The shape of the playing field may be changed, but the powerful still rule the weak. And those who do not conform with the rest of society are exiled to another world. A world that not even the technology of the future managed to tame.It should have been humanity's New World but ended up as nothing more than a penal colony. A place where the exiled are sent to die. Motivated by revenge, Magnus sets out on a quest to bring his own justice to his enemies. For that purpose, he is willing to go further than most others. But then he learns that if he truly wishes to change things, he can only find his answers beyond the gate. Having lived most of her life as an exile, Astra is a woman of few interests aside from survival and climbing the ranks of her clan.To achieve those goals, she certainly won't be squeamish when a chance literally falls into her lap, or will she? ——————————————————————————————— I am trying to go with a survival/medieval setting in this one. People from a technologically advanced society are thrown into a world where they can't maintain their tech. They are forced to rely on medieval technology where they have to make do with the limited resources they have and what little of their old technology is still working. Their gene manipulation allows them to have something akin to superpowers, but that doesn't help much against the monsters of their new world. Not sure yet whether sufficiently advanced technology will be discovered later on to count as magic. ——————————————————————————————— Author's Comment: I was asked about reading my work on other sites. The answer is simple: Currently, I am not active in any other networks than royalroadl.com. Only here, I correct mistakes and errors. If you read it anywhere else and have to pay for it or have to deal with an annoying amount of advertisement, You Are Being Betrayed. You would do good if you make other people in that network aware of it. This is a free project of mine for the purpose of having fun. And if people try to make money with it you shouldn't bother visiting their website. The only one whom I actually allowed to have my work on his website is Armaell who invested the time to compile them into pdf. (http://armaell-library.net/author/andur)

Thief of Time
[Participant in the Royal Road Writathon challenge] Book 1: The Legend of Tot Synopsis: Claud Primus, a self-declared master thief, has a simple goal. To live forever. It's a rather easy task, for miraculous objects called lifestones are able to extend one's lifespan. These lifestones are best found in the treasuries of nobles, lovely resorts that Claud pays a visit to every so often. Unfortunately, one of those nightly visits go awry, and Claud is forced to escape with just a single lifestone and a box in hand. Normally, that's when things die down. The guards yawn, the gates close, and the night continues. But this time, the night isn't that forgiving. A dozen schemes result in the murder of someone important, and with a convenient scapegoat — Claud — at hand, it doesn't take long for him to be framed as a heinous criminal, wanted for the indirect murder of someone high up...and it just gets worse from there. Book 2: The Moon Lords' Rise Synopsis: As ordered chaos sweeps across Licencia, Claud leaves for Julan Barony, intent on making some profits there. Accompanied by the erstwhile heiress of Julan, a fellow member of the Moon Lords, the two plot against the barony's wealth...as well as a promise to bring about its downfall. Meanwhile, back home, the Moon Lords have busied themselves with digesting their gains. Eyes, however, are beginning to turn to this proverbial fish in a small pond. The fishermen are coming. When they cast their hook, what will Dia and the others do? Book 3: Murders under the Moons Synopsis: In the sleepy town of Nachtville, where Claud and Lily are forced to stop at, a set of nasty murders occurs. Victims scream out in fright, before a spear falls from the sky to end their suffering. Cowed and cautious, the master thief and his partner slink in the shadows, their objective that of home... A new task, however, has fallen on Dia. With a trusty helper at her side, she has to set off towards Nachtville itself, to solve the mystery Claud had abandoned. Faced with an enemy whose sole skillset is geared towards killing, how will they succeed? And what dark secrets will they find? Book 4: In the Dark of the Moons Synopsis: The year has ended. The four months of the full moons will soon be followed by two months of the new moons. Duke Istrel's ascension is around the corner. Amidst this political upheaval, Count Nightfall, Licencia's strongest defender, has been called away. The Moon Lords' largest task yet — to protect Licencia in the absence of its ruler — has begun. And yet, trouble is unrelenting. A distinguished personage, one that Claud fears, has been found dead in the county, his brains dug out and his body disemboweled. The inquisitors of the White Church have been dispatched to investigate and apprehend the murderer...as well as the person behind this puppet. Tormented by a call to fight, Claud directs his eyes out of the city, looking for the puppetmaster. Skulking in the shadows, the master thief will soon confront his greatest foe yet. A foe just like him. Book 5: Moonlit Tides and Darkened Seas Synopsis: A new era has begun. For the privileged, the sands of time dribble away for every passing moment, counting down to the arrival of a entity of mythical proportions. The night now harbours shadows and fog, and operatives of the Moons and the Dark clash in shadow. Claud, as usual, is investigating a spate of nasty disappearances in the city, but little does he know what these disappearances truly mean. And yet, a tide is coming. When it finally breaks, what will he do? Book 6: Secrets in Shadow Synopsis: The person behind a strike that would enter the annals of history flees his home, bringing with him the person closest to his heart into a new land and into a new world. Having left Istrel for the first time in his life, the two of them attempt to settle down in foreign lands, only to be caught in the middle of hostilities between two mighty powers grappling for dominion. Yet, none of that has anything to do with him. Following his desires, Claud eventually makes his way to the fabled Celestia Ruins, a fragment of another world. Bearing witness to truths he cannot yet comprehend, he returns from his exploration, a small break away from the machinations of destiny. One thing, however, is for certain. Destiny will not wait for him. Book 7: Reddest Rage Synopsis: Destiny churns on, heedless of mortal machinations, and Claud watches as the battlegrounds between the Moons and the Dark are drawn up. With the forces of the great Dark occupying Lostfon, Claud comes to a startling realisation — that he may have very well be a murderer of heinous proportions. Grappling with that realisation, he struggles to prepare for his Second Tutorial... Back in Istrel, Dia finds herself confronted with a perennial truth. Even in a time of writhing destiny, the machinations between nobles never cease to end — and unfortunately for her, the group once known as the Moon Lords are forced into dealing with a petty squabble between two counts. What they didn't account for, however, was the startling discovery they would soon make... And the shadow of the Red God's Holy Son behind it all. Book 8: Darkness Descends Synopsis: Nightmares haunt the horizon as Claud sinks and awakens from a seeming dream. What was once illusory begins to play out before him, in a way he cannot imagine. Dia, forced to wield arms, begins and ends a battle that opens her eyes to the vast dangers that lurk in this sundered world. Under the banner of humanity and divinity, she beholds the silent, forgotten protectors of Orb...but there is no forgetting the battle between the divinities. The Dark descends, the Moons writhe, and the horns of war blow once more. But this is not their battle. Not yet. Book 9: Moons Muster Synopsis: As more and more events fall into place, Claud finds himself desperate. Not for himself, but for the person who has turned into his world. Armed with the knowledge of a certain future, he approaches the only person that could possibly help him in his time of need, trading information for a promise of help. With that as solace, he returns to the grim task of understanding and seeking, revisiting an ancient, shattered fragment of another world...unleashing changes that he never knew was possible. Back in Istrel, Dia and the others must now navigate around a familiar spirit, who seeks to investigate the death of his master's Bearer. With them as prime suspects, the Seekers of Life must move carefully...but the Coloured Gods are not the only divinities eyeing them closely. The Moons, bristling from repeated defeats, are looking for new recruits, and the Seekers of Life are prime cannon fodder. Above all, destiny marches on, the unfeeling clock a warning to all. The Trial of Aeons will soon arrive. Book 10: Destiny Divine Synopsis: ??? Release frequency: one every few days or something, I guess. Daily life of a cultivation judge
Tired of those cultivators who think it is righteous to eliminate a sect or clan root and stem all in the name of revenge and avoiding future troubles, fights over treasures that end up destroying cities with no consequence whatsoever to the culprit, these psychos whose aim for the peak always involves a trail of carnage and bloodshed in its wake for some reason. Then look no further than the daily life of a cultivation judge. Yang Qing, is a young genius cultivator from a low-tier family whose only safe choice to get resources and hopefully lead an easy life led him to the courts of the Cultivation Order Society. Author’s disclaimer: Hey there this is my first novel so any criticism will be well taken though beware I’m a million-year-old monster who has cultivated the way of the sword to the peak. The daily life of a cultivation judge will be true to its name so it will be heavily on the slice of life lane with a bit of action here and there.Meaning we will see the life of Yang Qing when he clocks in and out. Hopefully, it will be one of those novels you read if you need to relax or are in a slacker mood like one of those otakus who listen to the noises of cicadas in the summer famously used in most animes. And it is in the slacker spirit that chapter release will be on Wednesday,Thursday and Friday. Sank yuuu Cover art by Conny Schneider on Unsplash
