《The Innocent Soldier - Linstead》Chapter 11

I get to go home today. I haven't had many updates on the case. I just hope the unit finds whoever almost killed me. I texted Erin like 10 minutes ago. We discussed her picking me up and bringing me home because Will doesn't want me driving just yet. I decide to text her again.

"Hey, I'm at the front desk waiting area. What time do you think you'll be here?"

No response.

Where the hell is she? I don't really have another choice other than contact Voight. I pick my phone up again and tap his number..

"Need something Jay?"

His voice sounds uneasy.

"Do you know where Erin is? She was supposed to pick me up like 10 minutes ago."

Silence.

"Voight?"

"Jay, can you get somebody at the hospital to bring you to the district?"

"I guess I can ask. What goin-"

I hear someone say 'We got something!' In the background.

"Voight, what the hell is going on."

"I'll tell you later kid"

Beep. He hangs up on me. What's happening?! Where's Erin? Why's is he hiding this from me? What if-

"You look worried. What's wrong?"

Maggie Blackwood. Head nurse, usually stays at the front desk. Loved by everyone. She pulls me out of my thoughts and I look up at her.

"I...I think Erin's in trouble."

"Why do you think that?"

"Voight won't tell me anything and she was suppose to pick me up nearly 20 minutes ago. Voight wants me to find someone to take me to the district."

"Come on. Let's go."

"What?"

"I'll take you. Come on."

"Maggie you don't have to-"

"Let's . Go."

Maggie has always been a very sweet and motherly type person. But she just said that like she's punishing me. Damn, Maggie can be a scary woman. I get up and follow her. On the way of course she tells April and Natalie that she's leaving for a little bit, then leads me to her car. The drive is silent, mainly because I'm stressing out about this. We arrived at the district after our journey for what seemed like forever. I thank her and run inside and up the stairs. Of course it takes a lot longer than you think considering I have crutches to worry about. I finally get upstairs to see Erin's smiling face and badge number on the white board.

"What the hell is going on Voight?"

"Jay, calm down. We believe Erin was kidnapped on her way to pick you up. We got reports of a van snatching an unidentifiable woman and after watching security footage, we've been able to figure out that it was Erin and we think we know which direction they took her."

"W......What?"

I can't believe what I just heard.

"Jay, I'll get Burgess to take you home."

"NO! I'm helping find her."

"Jay-"

"I'm helping."

*2 hours later*

We've searched, tracked, watched more footage, and haven't found a lot.

I'm currently followed roadway on the map and watching the footage. I'm following what way they might've gone and watching footage from street corners. Then I see it. On the footage I zoom in on the driver. It's an old army buddy. I know where they took her.

"Sarg, I got a location!" Ruzek jumps up and says. Wait, what? How? He sends the location to everyone, but it's not the same address. Everyone takes a minute to match the evidence to the location. "Alright, suit up and let's go." Voight yells.

"Wait. I have a location too but it's not the same address."

"Halstead, all the evidence leads to this one. Sit down, we'll contact you when we find her"

"You're not going to! She's not there!!"

"Halstead! Sit down. You're losing your mind! We got this covered!"

And thats that. They all leave and go to the wrong location.

Erin dies.

No. No. That's not how this ends. I grab some keys and head downstairs. I get in one of the patrol cars and go to the location I found. My phone rings.

"Halstead! Platt just told me that a patrol car just left and she didn't give anybody the keys. I swear if you-"

"I'm finding her Voight. You took the wrong address so I'm going to find her. This guy is one of my army buddies and I know where he would take her. I'm doing this Voight. You can't do anything about it."

With that, I hang up. I get to the address and it's his old house. He moved 5 years ago but never sold his house, he kept it and used it for storage. On one of our tours, he mentioned that if he ever went missing, he was either dead or at home. He told us where to find him. He said that he had a lot of memories in his old house and sometimes he would go there to think. I get out of the car and pull out my gun, which I luckily put on my waist before I left. I slowly and quietly enter the dark, honestly creepy house. I check the first floor, then the basement, then I move upstairs. I thought the basement would be the first place he would go. I check the first bedroom, the bathroom, then the final bedroom. Nothing. Damn it.

"Who are you?"

I jumped at the sound. I turn around with my gun aimed and there he is. With a gun to the back of Erin's neck. Erin is sitting down, tied to the chair, with what looks like packing tape over her mouth.

"Drop the gun, Wesley."

Wesley Parks, retired Marine, current duty Army Ranger, Psycho.

"Now why would I do that? After you nearly got me killed at war? After you nearly left me for dead? After you somehow surviving that wreck?!"

"I didn't do those things! I wasn't in charge at the time! I was taking orders from MY sergeant! And you? You tried to kill me in the wreck?"

"Who else did you think it was!"

"Halstead!" Voight yells while running inside the house.

"He comes upstairs, I shoot her." Wesley states.

"Halstead!" Voight yells again.

"3" Wesley starts counting. Voight is running upstairs.

"Drop the gun Wes!"

"2"

"Halstead!"

"Erin. Come here, it's okay."

What happened was, Voight ran into the room, I shot Wes, and Erin ended up in the splash zone of Wesley's blood. Now at current time, I've untied Erin and brought her away from the dead body.

"I love you. I'm so sorry" I held her tight against me. Honestly I never thought I'd fire a gun again because of my PTSD. I guess love makes us do crazy things.

"Who was that Halstead?"

"Wesley Parks. A guy who I always thought was just an Innocent Soldier. I guess I was wrong."

I held Erin closer and she held on tighter.

"I'll never let you go again."
