《Pink and Yellow - Trimberly》Chapter 16

"What the hell?" I whispered and raised my head. "Holy fuck... Bad idea... Ow ow ow..."
I laid my head back down on the pillow. Every muscle in my body ached and my head was pounding with excruciating pain. I slowly lifted my left hand to my head but instantly pulled away. Instead of my own warm, soft skin, I felt the rough material of a cast.
Confused, I looked down and saw I was laying in a hospital bed with the sheets covering my whole body. I closed my eyes to try and remember what exactly happened to me and how I ended up in here. The silence didn't last very long due to a familiar voice.
"Dude, look who's awake." Zack nudged the Red Ranger.
"Hey, Kim, how are you feeling?" Jason came over to the side of my bed.
"I am full of joy, rainbows, and unicorns, thanks for asking." I groaned.
"Look at that, she still can be annoying when she's lying in a hospital bed." The Black Ranger rolled his eyes playfully. "Fantastic."
"Kimberly? Are you ok?" Billy asked.
"Yeah, I guess. Everything just hurts. Where's Trini?"
"She's right over there." Jason pointed to my left.
The Yellow Ranger was laying in a bed next to me. She was fully awake but didn't bother to look in my direction. Her arms and shoulders had scrapes and bruises. On her right eyebrow was a small cut that continued down past her eye.
"How long have you been awake?"
"About 15 minutes." She answered still staring straight.
"What happened to us?"
"I don't know."
I turned to Zack. "Krispy Kreme? When was that?"
"It's the still the same day, Kim." He replied.
"Does anyone know what happened?" They all shook their head.
Someone knocked on the door and slowly walked in. It was a young man with short, wavy, dark brown, tousled hair. He had a strong jaw line that was clenched. Though he has dark features, his eyes were the brightest shade of emerald green. He looked in his mid-twenties and I had to admit, very handsome.
He wore a white coat and carried a clipboard in his hands. He glanced at the clipboard then to me and nodded once. Then looked at Trini and raised his eyebrows and... Smiled?
"Wow, Trini." His voice was deep and a bit husky.
"Derick" Trini responded.
"How long has it been?"
"Eight months."
"That's at least some progress."
"Shut up." She chuckled softly.
"What is happening? You two know each other?" I asked.

"Yep. Six years, right Trini?"
"Mmhm." The Latina nodded.
The man known as Derick took a stool from the corner of the room and placed it in between our beds. He sat down and wrote a few things on his papers.
"So... The accident. I want you to tell me everything that happened. Everything you remember."
"Uhh, well. That's the thing." I swallowed. "We don't know anything."
"Yeah, same. I can't remember how I got here." Trini added.
Derick turned to the boys. "What about you three?"
Jason and Billy shook their heads no while Zack answered. "Actually, Kimberly and I were talking in Krispy Kreme and then we split to our own places. Next thing I know it, Trini kicks open the door to my house holding Kimberly in her arms.. Unconscious."
"Woah, what." Trini furrowed her eyebrows.
"Then?" Derick motioned for him to go on.
"Then Trini walked to my couch and laid her down... Then she passed out herself." He finished.
"I think... I think I remember fainting." I said.
"Oh, wait yeah. I saw you faint in the street. But then... After that, I thought I passed out also." Trini gave Derick a knowing look.
"Ohh..." They both said in unison.
"What?"
"Nothing." She quickly replied.
"Ok, so you two obviously got hurt somehow but nothing too serious." He looked at me. "You, Miss Hart, have a few bruises and cuts here and there. Also on your left hand, a few fingers were broken but nothing that can't be helped."
I nodded. "Cool..."
"And you, Trini, you also have cuts and bruises. But you do have a slight concussion."
"Typical." She mumbled.
"I'm going to have to ask you to go to one room over to your left for a few more check-ups. Then after that you'll come back here and we'll do the t-"
"-Test. I got it, I got it." She slowly got up and winced in pain.
Derick stood up to help her but was rejected. Soon, the Yellow Ranger was out of the small room leaving me with the three other Rangers and Derick.
"Who are you?"
He looked up from his clipboard. "I'm sorry?"
"How do you know Trini? What happened to us?"
"I don't know what happened to you two, that's what I'm trying to figure out. And Trini and I have known each other for about six years."
"Six years?"
"Yep. She's a great girl."
"How'd you meet?"
He tensed up slightly. "In a hospital..."
"What?" I grew more worried. "How?"

"She never told you, didn't she?"
"Tell me what? What the fuck are you talking about?" I growled. "Who the hell are you?"
"I'm a good friend of hers. She talks a lot about you guys. She seems to favor you four." He looked at me. "Especially you."
"I want you to tell me everything. Now. I demanded.
"I said that I've known her for six years. She has been a patient at this hospital for about that time. I care for her. She didn't have a good childhood. Her mother began to drink when she was about six. It was two days before she turned eight when she came home from school and her mother was on the couch with multiple bottles of beer on the coffee table. Trini tried to help her but she didn't like it. She beat Trini and Trini called the cops afterwards. She was put into the foster care system on her eight birthday..."
"Oh my god..." I whispered out of breath while Jason held my hand.
"Her first guardian didn't care for her at all. She went to school and was bullied. It started off slow but increasingly began worse. Calling her names and teasing her became pushing and shoving. At age nine she was beaten by her bullies but her guardian didn't put her in a hospital. The guardian waited for her to get better and sent her off to a different home. Three years had passed and she had been to a couple different homes. Each one treated her poorly. At age twelve was when she was abused by her guardians and ended up in a hospital where I took care of her."
I felt like I was going to faint. Is this what Trini meant when she said neither me or her could take it all in one day? How the hell did she hid all this shit?
"So pretty much from then, she's been jumping from foster home to foster home. Every one of them except for maybe three treated her horribly. She would end up here and would always ask for me to help her. We got to know each other and she's like a little sister to me now."
"Ok, ok ok ok. I'm trying to process all of this. What about just now when you and her looked at each other and went 'ohh' after Zack told her what he saw."
"When she came in his house with you in her arms?"
"Yeah, yeah that."
"Because of her traumatizing past, she developed that... ability. She's been hurt physically and emotionally so much that she's become numb to the feeling. It's awful. She had the ability to turn off her emotions. If there's a potential threat, she'll turn them off in fear of getting hurt again. Because when they're, off she can't feel anything. You could punch her and she wouldn't respond to it."
"That... T-that makes sense..."
"What I'm guessing what happened is someone was attacking you two and she saw you pass out somehow. That's when she felt like she needed to do everything she could to keep you safe. So she flipped the switch and brought you to Zack's house. Flipped them back on and passed out from the pain."
"This is way too much... This is so much- I can't."
"I know, Kimberly." He started. "Trini is the sweetest girl I know. She's just covered up by layers and layers of her walls. She cares so much for people, even people she doesn't like, because she couldn't bear the thought of anyone going through a fraction of the pain she went through. She trusts you and she wanted to tell you all of this but couldn't."
"O-okay... Alright."
"Do me a favor and be there for her."
"I know. I will and I always will."
The Yellow Ranger returned and laid back down on the bed. Derick picked up a black bag at his feet and looked at Trini. I was still in shock and couldn't find myself to do anything at the time.
"Ok, so we've done this a few times."
She rolled her eyes. "Yep. Let's get this over with."
"Ok. I have to give you the instructions each time so bear with me. I am going to hold up and object and you're going to identify what I'm holding. Simple as that."
"Yeah, got it."
He held up a toy train.
"It's a train." She answered.
"Good." He placed it in the bag and took out a card with a shape on it.
"Pentagon."
"Good."
Lastly, he took out a plastic hammer. "And this?"
"It's a screwdriver." The Latina said with no hesitation causing my head to snap towards her giving her a look of worry.
"Very good." He began. "It's in the same category. It's a tool. But this is not a screwdriver it's a hammer."
"Hammer..." She threw up a hand in annoyance. "Yeah, yeah a hammer. I knew that... I don't know why screwdriver came out instead."
"It's alright, Trini. I'll leave you all to talk. Someone else will be with you shortly."
"Ok, I'll see you later." She said softly.
"You too, Trini." He showed her the same toy hammer. "But before I go, can you tell me what this is?"
She replied with complete confidence.
"It's a screwdriver."
