《The Berlin Wall》Chapter 33

Closing my eyes gave me freedom. But it was a mistake.

Something caught around my foot, wrapping, strangling my ankle, digging its teeth into my skin and tearing deeper as I fell for what seemed like forever into a dark abyss of metal. A scream escaped my lips as I fell and I wanted to pull out my voice box. New cuts sprang up all over my body and I twisted and turned to release my ankle and clamber free but the more I moved, the more I became stuck and engulfed by the waves of wire. I lay still, parts of my body touching the ground, other parts just held up by the wire. I opened my eyes to see the ground beneath me, see the individual grains of sand and stone, little twigs and weeds escaping through anywhere they could. I heard movement from the other side of the wall, lots of movement. Lots of people. I could hear them talking. Why were they here? Had they heard my scream? Where was Lukas now? Had he got over the wall and escaped or was he still there?

Taking a deep breath, I tried to get my breathing under control. Pain and aching surged through my body, new spasm of agony beginning wherever the jagged spikes of barbed wire pierced my skin; the knowledge that I can't move or more pain would erupt through my body eradicating my last few wisps of hope of survival. A trail of blood ran down the side of my face and my hair stuck to my face from the sweat. The pounding behind my ears muffled the screams and cries around me yelling at me to get up. Despite the pain, a hesitant laugh escaped my lips. How can I run? If you know how I can escape, do share the knowledge with me.

Another blast of screams burst through the atmosphere as heavy working boots headed towards my. My heart pounded behind my chest. The boots stopped right in front of my face and the man in a dust dull uniform knelt down beside me, pointing the barrel of his gun to my temple. I twisted my head and stared up at him, tears blurring my sight as I looking into his merciless and heartless eyes. Looking away, I swallowed the cry for help and begging I couldn't believe I had even considered doing.

The gun pressed harder to my skull, I sucked in a deep breath, clenching my eyes shut.
