《The Berlin Wall》Chapter 31

Packing my few belongings into my rucksack, I stared blankly at the point at which the bed touched the wall. Nothing was interesting about it, it was just a point to stare at. A yawn forced itself out of my mouth, followed by another a few minutes later, pulling my hand up to hide it. Last night hadn't been the best, sleep wise. I had had to sleep on the sofa because I didn't dare go back into Lukas' room whilst he was in there. Luckily he had had a shower and gone to the shop this morning, and was seeming to take a long time getting back. But for once, that didn't bother me, because it meant I could get in his room and pack my things without him there. It also meant I could think without anyone watching me.

Pulling on the draw string bag to close it, I threw one strap over my shoulder and glanced around the room. It felt wrong to even be in here. There were no longer any signs of life from the belongings Lukas and I had brought. It was just empty, and ghostly. I hurried out the room with haste, moving back to sit down at the table in the kitchen. After Julia and I had sat here for a while yesterday, the family came out and we watched TV for a while before going out to the park with the youngsters. Lukas didn't come. We got back and he still was nowhere in sight. He just remained in his room all day and made no sound, as if he wasn't there. At dinner, Julia brought food to his room and spoke to him for a few minutes but from what I gathered, the conversation wasn't very long. She had then made a bed for me on the sofa, consisting of a cushion and a blanket. And that's what's brought us to today. The day Lukas and I were returning home.

A key twisted in the lock and the door flew open, followed by a slamming noise as it was thrown shut. A few seconds later, Lukas walked into the kitchen and put a bag on the counter, unloading various things into the fridge for his family, I guessed, seeing as they looked like the things people generally could never afford.

"A goodbye present?" I questioned, trying to dissolve the tension between us. He glanced over towards me, an empty expression on his face before shrugging and returning to packing the things away. Silent treatment then. I sighed. "I'm sorry." I repeated for the millionth time. Or maybe all those apologies had just been in my head when I was rehearsing them every second of yesterday and this morning.

"It's fine." He broke his silence bluntly and edgy as if with a blunt chain saw. "We're leaving in 15minutes." He said before flattening the bag into a draw and walking back into his deserted abyss of a room.

"That went better than I expected." I mumbled to myself, dumping my bag on the floor next to the chair I sat on.

15minutes later, he was out again, saying goodbyes to his family all sweetly and kindly. He loved them dearly, I could see. And although his uncle didn't show it, he was worried for our sakes, though the same can't be said for his aunt, she was worried of course, but she showed it all over her face, her body language and in her voice. It was blatantly clear. As for the younger ones, they were confused, and didn't understand the situation so only said goodbye as if it were only for a week. Sorry kids. He kissed them on the top of their foreheads and hugged his aunt and uncle before picking up his bag and pushing me out of the door, locking it behind him and pushing the key through the letterbox.

Once we were out of the building he took a deep breath in, closing his eyes and soaking in the sun. Feeling my stare, he opened his eyes and glanced down to me and saw my stare before I could look away. He then began walking, hands in pockets, through the town and various streets, towards the Berlin Wall which we would reach by the end of the day. This would be a long day.
