《that's life » s. hyde》[37] eric's depression

Dear Diary,

Well.

It's officially been two days since Eric and Donna broke up. But, more importantly, it's also been two days since Steven and I started going steady! And, to be honest, it's been...

Terrible.

Okay, okay, not really ~terrible~ in the sense that I hate having made it official between us. I say ~terrible~ because it's been really, really... weird? Between us? Steven and I have always been so easy going around each other, we can talk to one another about anything and everything, and yet these past two days alone have been so strange.

It's like I don't even know how to act around him. I mean, ordinarily if I liked a boy I would flirt with him as much as possible, I mean that's how I managed to pull someone like Nick. But I think I've just known Steven for far too long. Around Nick, I would get all dolled up and strut around in my cutest little outfits, making Donna and Jackie talk me up to him when I wasn't around, but I couldn't do any of that with Steven.

He asked me yesterday why I was being so quiet. We were sitting on opposite sides of the couch, silently watching the Brady kids in whatever tizzy they were in for the episode. I wasn't in his lap, we weren't holding hands, we were just sitting at an awkward distance from each other, not even laughing at the stupid philosopies of Mike Brady.

So he asked me.

And I just hummed, said "I'm fine, I'm always fine," like I would always say to Nick. And before we could continue the conversation, Fez ran in, demanding Steven help him pick out some candy.

I don't know what to do, Diary. I don't know where to go from here. I mean what if this never ends? What if we can't stop being awkward around each other and this lasts forever and our friendship is ruined? If that happened, I don't know what I would-

"Hey, Mrs. Forman. Hey, Izzy Bee." Hyde came in through the sliding glass door, followed by Kelso and Fez.

"Hi, Steven." Izzy huffed, quickly holding the diary under the table, out of any of the boys' sight.

Kitty shook her head at her daughter and handed her the maple syrup. "Well you boys are up bright and early this morning!"

"Yeah!" Kelso said with a grin. "We're going to Funland!

"That sounds like fun!"

"It is! It's superfun!"

"Oh, Red, remember how we used to take the twins there when they were little?"

Izzy chuckled and took a sip of her orange juice as all the boys sat at the table. Izzy couldn't ignore how Hyde seemed to take the seat furthest from her. "Yeah, Mama would get on the roller coasters with us, and just before we took off, Dad would jump out and wave goodbye."

Red smiled. "Boy did Eric scream!"

"I'm excited to go again." Izzy rested her chin on her hand. "Plus, Eric could use some fun, ya know?"

Kitty and Red just looked at Izzy confusedly.

"Since he and Donna broke up." Kelso added.

Red scowled. "What?"

Kitty dropped her fork. "Broke up?"

"Yeah, Donna dumped his ass." Hyde said.

Fez shook his head. "I thought Eric was the one who dumped Donna." Red and Kitty shared a look, then everyone burst into laughter. "Nevermind," Fez said sheepishly.

"Well Eric must just be a wreck." Kitty sighed.

Izzy nodded. "He's been hiding in his room, just listening to sad music all weekend. I made him cookies last night? Didn't even sit up, but ate a whole batch."

"Wh- You made him cookies?!" Kelso whined. "Seriously, Izzy, you gotta tell me before you do these things! I need to be the first to know so I can get my fair share of cookies!"

Fez scowled. "In your dreams, you son of a bitch! That will always be me. Fez."

-

"Come on Forman, get outta bed!" Hyde said, throwing the door open to Eric's bedroom.

Fez nodded. "Yes, we have to go to Funland before all the fun is gone."

"I'm not going." Eric mumbled, his head under his blanket. Izzy sighed and grabbed his legs, Kelso immediately jumping to help her drag Eric to the floor. He quickly crawled back into bed, finally pulling the blanket down to reveal his dirty, stubbly, tired face.

"Forman, man, snap out of it." Hyde said.

Fez nodded. "So you had one of the hottest chicks in Point Place and you ruined it. It could be worse."

Hyde snickered. "No, it couldn't."

"Eric, come on." Izzy said softly, sitting on the bed next to him. "It's not all bad. I mean, now you don't have to worry about Bob being your father-in-law." She tried to get him to crack a smile, but was quickly digging herself into a hole. "So, like, at your wedding--but not your wedding! Not anymore!! I- I mean..." She looked around at the boys, all stifling laughs. "I'm going to stop talking now. Sorry, Eric."

"Guys, I don't want to talk about Donna." Eric mumbled. "And I don't want to go to Funland."

"Fine." Izzy huffed. "If you're not going with us, we're staying here with you."

Kelso's eyes widened. "We're not going to Funland?!" Hyde responded by punching Kelso's shoulder.

The four of them all sat down on Eric's bed. Izzy and Hyde sat down next to each other, both of them eying the other without actually turning their heads to look at them. Izzy sat with her hands folded neatly in her lap, and Hyde's arms were crossed.

After a moment of silence, Fez reached for the action figures above Eric's bed.

"Don't!" Eric held up a finger. "-touch the G.I. Joes." Fez nodded silently and put his hand back down.

"Hey Steven, I-"

"Hey, Iz?" Eric quickly cut his sister off. "Can we not talk?" Izzy shut up and stared down at her open palms. "Thanks."

There were another few moments of silence, until Izzy rolled her eyes and stood up. "Fine, we're going to Funland." She headed for the door, followed quickly by the boys.

"Good." Eric said, watching them leave. "Go."

Fez hung behind and turned to look at his friend. "You know what? I am glad you are not going to Funland. Because you will suck the fun right out of it. And then, it will just be called Landland." He nodded, pausing slightly, then his eyes widened. "I'm sorry, I'll get you a candy apple, okay?"

-

Once the group had picked up Jackie and made it to Funland, Izzy looked around at the people. On the way there, Hyde had driven them all in the El Camino. Izzy was going to sit in the front with him and use that time to talk about what was going on with them, but Kelso had quickly called shotgun, so Izzy was stuck in a mindless conversation with Jackie and Fez the whole way up.

"Okay Michael," Jackie said sternly. "Now we have to stay together. Every time we come here, you get lost." It was true. Without fail, each time Kelso had gone to Funland, he had been separated from the group quickly. Almost always, though, they'd find him by the end of the day.

"Damn, Jackie, there's fun around every corner!"

"Michael! What are the rules?"

Kelso thought hard for a moment, and the others watched with amusement. "Um... No hitting you from behind with the bumper cars."

"And?"

"And... no riding the goats at the petting zoo."

"And?"

Kelso couldn't think of another rule.

"We have to stay together, Michael!"

Kelso stomped his foot. "Fine!" He looked over and saw a man carrying several brightly-colored balloons. "Balloons!"

"Stay."

"Fine!"

Hyde snickered. "Izzy Bee, you still afraid of balloons?"

Izzy's eyes widened. "Yes! I am!"

"What would you do if I got you one?"

She crossed her arms. "I would be hurt, because you know I'm scared of them."

Just then, a man dressed in a big, creepy dog costume came up behind Izzy. "Hey there, kids!" Izzy jumped, watching with wide eyes as he continued his act. "I'm Woofy, the Funland dog! And I'm here to make sure you have fun, fun, fun!"

He patted Hyde's head with each "fun," which made Hyde scowl. "Touch me like that again, you're gonna eat your Alpo through a straw, straw, straw!"

"Whoa, okeydokey! Well, I'm going down to the saloon to look for the guy who shot my paw!" Woofy held up his paw, showing off a comically large bandage. He howled loudly and ran away, leaving the gang watching him, confused but amused.

"Oh my god!" Fez said excitedly. "That was Woofy, and he talked to us!"

Izzy chuckled. "Okay, you guys. We need to pick a place to meet in case we decide to split up."

"How about the corner of Fun Street and Fun Boulevard?" Jackie asked. "I mean that should be easy enough for even Michael to remember." She swiveled around to talk to her boyfriend, but was met with absence. "Michael!" She looked around, but there were so many people that none of them were able to spot Kelso. "Great, now we'll never find him."

"Ah, sure we will." Fez reassured her. "All we have to do is show people his picture, and they'll help us find him."

Hyde furrowed his brow. "You have a picture of Kelso in your wallet?"

"Of course. I carry pictures of all my friends." He opened his wallet and let the others look at the pictures.

Izzy grinned. "That's a really good one of me, thanks Fez." She looked a little further down. "Yep, I'm definitely the hot twin."

Jackie raised an eyebrow. "You're friends with Nipsey Russell?"

Fez gave her a sheepish smile. "I want to be."

-

"I just don't know, Funland Princess! We've always been so good with each other, but these past few days have been just as bad as our big Halloween fight." Izzy huffed, crossing her arms.

The group had decided to split up to look for Kelso and meet back to where Jackie said in a half hour. Izzy had found her way back early, sitting on a bench with the Funland Princess, who was drinking something from a bedazzled flask.

"The Halloween fight, that was the one about your hot ex, right?" She asked.

Izzy's eyes widened. "I did not call him hot!"

"No, but he sounds like it. Hey, can I get his number?"

Izzy made a face. "Aren't you married to the Funland Prince?" She just shrugged and took another dainty sip from her flask. "Anyway..." She groaned and put her head in her hands. "We used to work so well! We used to be Izzy Bee and Steven Hyde. When people thought of two people who got along great, they thought of us! Now we can barely talk-"

"Toots, it's been two days."

"And I miss the way we used to talk two days ago. I want to go back to then, but I want to keep the relationship part of now! And the worst part? I don't think he realizes anything's changed."

"Are you, like, keepin' the relationship a secret? Maybe that's why he doesn't want to show affection-"

"No! No. No. No secret relationship stuff anymore." Izzy paused. "My friends know. My parents don't, we haven't told them yet. Is that why he's acting so weird? He doesn't want my parents to know?"

"My advice? Screw his friend and run away to work at a theme park."

Izzy sighed. "You'd get along really well with my older sister."

Izzy's head snapped up when she heard a quick, "Izzy!" from across the area. She spotted Hyde holding something behind his back, and Fez was motioning for her to join them. She did, and when she got there, Fez was nearly jumping up and down.

"Did you find him?" Izzy asked, though she didn't see Kelso anywhere.

"No, but Hyde here says he has something to show us."

Hyde pulled a shirt out from behind his back. "Check it out!"

"Fun University." Izzy read.

"Now check out the back!"

Izzy's jaw dropped open as she started giggling. Fez just looked at them confusedly. "FU? I don't get it."

"FU, man!" Hyde snickered. "FU!"

Izzy giggled. "FU, Fez!"

Fez gave them a half smile. "Oh, right. Foo. That's uh... that's a good one!"

Just then, Jackie came rushing up to the group. "Ugh, I tried looking for Michael, but I can't see over the crowd! Oh, I wish Donna was here. She's a giant."

"Don't remind me." Fez sighed. "I asked her, and asked her, and asked her to come, but she just kept saying, 'Get out of my bathroom, Fez!'"

-

"We still have to find Kelso, guys." Izzy said. "What time is it?"

"Did someone ask what time it is?!" Izzy jumped when she heard the voice of Woofy the Dog behind her, yet again.

"Dude! Stop scaring me like that!"

"Why, here at Funland, it's always fun o'clock!" With his queue, a Funland barbershop quartet turned around and started singing Woofy's words.

"Yeah yeah yeah, thanks a lot, you morons!" Hyde grumbled. The group all walked away, not knowing that the barbershop quartet would turn around and begin serenading Michael Kelso himself.

-

Izzy, Hyde, Fez, and Jackie all sat on a bench at the hub of Funland. They were decked out in Funland merch, Hyde holding a teddy bear and a comically large lollipop, Izzy holding a plate of nachos like it was a baby, Fez was dressed up like Woofy, and Jackie was wearing a princess crown.

"I can't believe you three." Jackie huffed. "Poor Michael is lost, and all you've done is gone on rides and had fun!" She looked up to see her idol walking past her. She jumped up, squealing, "Oh my god, oh my god! The Funland Princess!!"

Jackie ran after her, and the boys groaned and got up to follow. Izzy trailed behind Jackie and watched as Jackie managed to stop the princess, hugging her tightly.

"Hey, Jackie? I think you might commit regicide if you don't ease up on that hug." Izzy chuckled as Fez and Hyde finally caught up to them.

"Yeah, seriously." The Funland Princess wriggled out from the hug and signed Jackie's autograph book. She looked up at the group, her eyes stopping at Izzy. "Hey, it's you. How're your boyfriend troubles?"

Izzy's cheeks burned as Hyde's eyes widened. "Boyfriend troubles, Izzy Bee?"

The Princess raised her eyebrows. "Is this him? This is the goober who hasn't talked to your parents yet? Sheesh, Toots, you shoulda stayed with your ex."

Jackie and Fez were watching with wide eyes as Hyde grabbed Izzy's wrist and pulled her away from the group.

"Steven, look, I'm sorry-"

"Why did you talk to the Funland Alcoholic about us? If you have a problem, you can talk to me about it, you know."

"But that's the problem!"

"What's the problem?"

"That!"

"What?!"

Izzy shut her eyes tightly, quickly saying, "Why has it been so awkward between us since we got together?" Hyde's jaw clenched. "I- I mean, Steven. Yesterday you put your arm around me to get food out of my hair, and that was the most affection you've shown all weekend. I don't know if you've noticed, but-"

"No. No, I've noticed. I just... I mean... God, Izzy Bee. Look at you!" Izzy furrowed her eyebrows confused. "I'm nervous, okay? I've never had a real girlfriend before, and you're way out of my league."

"Steven, I am not-"

"Yes, you are. You're great, Izzy Bee. Better than great. You're... what's that word you like to use so much?"

Izzy smiled faintly. "Splendid."

"You're that. You're an artist, you're a good student, you're a great person. I just can't believe that you actually want to be my girlfriend. I can not wrap my head around it."

Izzy chuckled and wrapped her arms behind his neck, pulling him a little closer. "Well believe it, Mister. Because I want nothing more than to be your girlfriend." She kissed him lightly, and watched as a blush rose to his cheeks.

"A- And if you're worried about not having told Red or Kitty yet-"

"I am. Very much so."

"I'll tell them as soon as we get back to your place. You can go upstairs and get the nacho cheese out of your hair and I'll talk to them."

She let out a little sigh of relief. "Thank you, Steven."

"Oh, also?"

"Hm?"

"I got you a pink Fun University shirt."

Izzy's eyes widened. "A pink FU?!"

"A pink FU."

She wrapped her arms around his waist, pulling him in for a tight hug. He put his arms around her, holding her close.

Hyde pressed a kiss to the top of her head. "I love you, Izzy Bee."

Izzy took in a steady breath and smiled. "I love you, too."

-

That evening, when the gang had gotten kicked out of Funland after closing, they returned home without Kelso. Hyde dropped off Fez and Jackie, and Izzy was sitting in the front seat, making Hyde listen to the Allman Brothers, despite his previous protests.

There was a silence as Izzy was resting her head against the cool window and Hyde was focused on the road. Her hand was atop his, which was resting on her thigh as he drove.

She picked up her head, looking over at him, studying his face. He glanced at her a moment, then chuckled. "What?"

"Nothing."

"You're staring."

"I have reason."

He smiled, taking his hand off her leg and intertwining their fingers. "Oh yeah? What's that?"

"You're real pretty."

He chuckled. "Not half as pretty as you, doll."

-

Standing in the kitchen, Izzy pressed her lips to Hyde's. "You've got this. I'm gonna be upstairs if you need me, but I have faith in you."

He kissed her forehead. "Thanks."

"Good luck." Izzy went through the door to the living room, rushing upstairs to wash her hair.

Hyde stood outside the door, mentally preparing himself for the conversation he was about to have. He took a breath, ran a hand down his face, and headed into the living room, where Kitty was hemming a pair of pants and Red was mixing her a drink at the bar.

"Oh hi, Steven!" Kitty said with a smile. "You kids got back late. You shouldn't be driving home this late, stay here tonight."

Red sighed. "Kitty, you can't just offer our house up willy-nilly!" He handed his wife her drink and sat down next to her. "That being said, Steven, your room is always open."

Hyde wiped his palms on his hands and sat in Red's usual chair. "Nah- No. No thank you. Um... I just wanted to talk to you two about something."

Kitty looked up at Hyde, seeing his serious expression. She set down the pants she was working on to give him her full attention. "What's wrong?"

"I... Um... Well, y'see-"

"Use your words, son." Red said.

Hyde reached over and took the pants away from Kitty. "Don't want any needles around. No pointy objects."

"Steven, what's wrong?" Kitty repeated.

Hyde took a breath, then said all in one breath, "I asked out Izzy a few nights ago and she said yes so we're kind of boyfriend-girlfriend now and I just wanted you guys to know!"

He watched for their reactions.

Kitty immediately started tearing up. She had a wide smile on her face and clapped her hands together. "Oh, finally! I have been waiting so long to..." Her voice faded away in Hyde's mind as he saw the look on Red's face.

Fuck, Hyde thought.

"Steven, can I talk to you in the kitchen, please?"

Double fuck.

"Yeah. Yes." Hyde swallowed nervously. "Yes, Sir." He stood up and followed Red into the kitchen, who pulled out the lecture chair and pointed at it.

Triple fuck.

Hyde sat.

"Steven, do you remember the day you met Isabelle?"

Huh?

"Um... I do, Sir."

Red chuckled. "I don't think you do. Retell it to me."
