《Pathetic || Seth Clearwater》Thirty

"There", Carslie said cheerfully as he finished tying the knot on Seth's sling. "That should keep it in place while you heal. We can take it off in a few hours". He stepped back as Seth grinned. He wriggled his fingers with only a mined since, looking at the tight bandages keeping his arm splinted.
"Is that better?" Ellis asked as he sat down next to him. Seth smiled at him warmly. They were both sat at the kitchen island. Carslie's medical equipment was spread out across the table. The man was packing them back up now that they were no longer needed. Leah was sitting opposite them, watching warily. She liked Ellis but she was still uncertain about being in the Cullen's house. Seth wriggled his fingers at her in a joking wave and her lips twitched.
"Yeah. Much better", he replied. He pressed a quick kiss to Ellis' hair, causing him to smile. There was the sound of a chair scrapping as Leah got up.
"I'm going back outside now that I know you're fine", She muttered, heading towards the door. "I can't stand the smell of the vamps in here".
"Hey!" Ellis and Seth synchronised.
It was if they could physically hear Leah roll her eyes. "Yeah yeah, apart from you Ellis". Ellis grinned at her retreating back. She liked him really.
"Ignore her", Seth said as they heard the front door slam. The rest of the Cullens were elsewhere. Bella has tried apologising several more times but had been scared away by Ellis' glare. Esme has taken her as Edward to their new house, a cottage deep in the woods. Rosalie and Jacob had left halfway through the bandaging process to put Nessie to bed up in Edward's old room. Alice and Jasper had taken the opportunity to go of some where. Ellis guessed that they were off on a impromptu date. While Emmet has returned to his Jeep in the garage.
"Come on", Ellis hopped of his stool and held out a hand. "I still have that gift to give you remember?" Seth' eyes lit up at the mention of the mysterious gift. Ellis had been waving that black box at him all day. He was dying to know what was inside.

"What Is it?"
Ellis huffed. "I'm not going to tell you. That's the whole point of a gift".
Carslie chuckled as he zipped up his bag. "He had to ask Alice and Esme for help". Ellis groaned and shot his adoptive father a dirty look. Seth beamed at this information, heart warmed by the obvious effort that Ellis had put into it.
"You two go and hand out upstairs", Carslie suggested. He gestured to the clean kitchen. "I'll make dinner for you, Leah and Jacob in a minute".
"That's very nice of you. Thanks", Seth answered, still slightly sheepish at the Cullen's continuing offers of food. Carslie waved away his gratitude with a pleasant smile. Ellis took the opportunity to gently steer Seth up the stairs to his room.
Since Bella had broken his arm and collar bone, the hammock was out of the question. Although Ellis could easily lift Seth into the hammock. He doubted that the taller, bigger boy would like it. Other times when he had picked Seth up, he had squawked and kicked wildly in surprise. His jerky movements had been hilarious at the time. But with his bones fragile as they tried to heal, if he reacted as he had done before, it could strain his injuries. Instead, Ellis pulled down all the pillows and blankets to make a nest on the floor.
Seth sat down in the nest gingerly, burying himself in the pillows and blankets. "This is so comfortable", he sighed, reclining back. Ellis grabbed the box from his desk and crawled behind him. Seth leaned back between his legs, resting his head on his chest. He reached out with his free arm for the box and Emil gave it to him with a smile.
"What's the occasion?" Seth asked.
"Nothing", Ellis answered. "I just saw it and though you'd like it". Seth struggled with the cello tape, unable to open it one handed. Ellis took pity on him. Reaching over, he used his nails to slice through the tape. Eagerly, Seth pulled the box open.

"A insta camera", Seth grinned delightedly. He pulled the white insta mix camera out of the box, turning it over to survey it.
"There's film in there too", Ellis added. "Sue told me that you used to like photography. I thought you'd like to try using Polaroids".
Seth stretched upward to press a kiss to Ellis' cheek. "This is so nice of you. Thank you".
"Your welcome", Ellis laughed. Seth was reading over the instructions. Ellis helped him unpackage the film and slot it into the camera. Luckily it came with batteries, so they didn't need to move and get some.
"Let's take one of us", Seth suggested. "You guys do appear in photos right?"
"Yes we do", Ellis giggled. He took the camera from Seth's grasp and held it up in front of them. "Smile", he said as he clicked the shutter. The flash lit up and a whirring noise sounded as the Polaroid emerged from the slot in the side. Seth took it and began shaking it eagerly.
"Let's do another", he declared. Ellis laughed.
"Cheese!" Flash. Another Polaroid emerged and Seth dropped the first one to grab it.
They took a few more. Some were of them messing around, pulling stupid faces and poking at each other's cheeks. In another, Ellis pressed a kiss to Seth's temple as the flash went off. Eventually they had about five Polaroid's assembled on the carpet. They watched as the colours began to bleed in.
A knock at the door interrupted them. Esme opened it and stuck her head through. "Hello boys. I just wanted to tell you that there's food downstairs if you want Seth. Jacob and Leah had been given theirs".
"Thank you Esme", Seth replied. She noticed the Polaroid on the carpet and she smiled excitedly.
"Oh did Ellis give you his present?" She asked. She entered the room an kneeled down next to them to see the photos. "I see you've been having fun with it".
Seth sat up and leaned over the photos next to her. "Yeah. It great. Thank you for helping him".
Esme smiled. "Oh it nothing dear. Is it okay if I keep one? I have photos of all my children but I haven't gotten round to taking some of Ellis yet"
Seth nodded and she began looking through them. Ellis looked down at them. They gave him a warm feeling in his chest. Seth was laughing in a few, mouth stretched widely with joy. His own face was above, eyes crinkled in a smile as he looked at Seth with obvious devotion.
"Can I have this one?" Esme asked. She lifted up the one where Seth was kissing Ellis on the cheek. The tanned boy had leaned up and Ellis was grinning widely at the camera. The Polaroid film emphasised the colours and shading but it was still easy to see Ellis' vampiric beauty. His happiness in the photo only added to it.
"Sure", Seth beamed as Ellis nodded. "Ellis and I will split the remaining four". He chose two. The one where Ellis was kissing him on the temple and another where they were both making crazy faces. Ellis had screwed up his eyes and was growling playfully at the camera, imitating a wolf, whilst Seth had hissed and bared his teeth like a vampire. Just looking at it made Ellis chuckle.
That left Ellis with the other two. One was the first on they took. It showed them relaxed, smiling happily for the camera. They looked so comfortable together that it made his heart warm. The second was another silly one. Both of them sticking their tongue out comically.
It was a perfect moment; Seth's reassuring scent and body heat, Esme's motherly presence. He felt relaxed and happy. Ellis didn't want it to end.

Hazelsong: A LitRPG Novel
Release Schedule: I will be moving to a set release schedule as of 1/1/2022. A new chapter will be released every Saturday at Noon EST. If I have time that week for a second chapter, I will leave a note on the Saturday chapter and post the second chapter on Sunday at Noon EST. An up to date character sheet for the MC Erik will also be posted on Sundays at 12:15 PM. If life happens and I am for some reason unable to write that week, I will post a blank chapter giving you an update on where I am with my writing. Saturday Noon EST: First weekly chapter Sunday Noon EST: Second weekly chapter (if I have the time) Sunday 12:15 EST: Updated character sheet Synopsis: Years after surviving a deadly accident, Erik struggles to come to terms with his painful disability. When offered the chance to playtest the world's first full immersion VRMMO, he wants nothing more than to retreat back into his secluded life, until he learns what Hazelsong really offers. An escape from the pain. Hazelsong is a world of magic and adventure, a place where friendships are formed, loot is won, and glory and fame are there for the taking. While the threats feel real and the stakes are always high, there is only one thing Erik is really in danger of. Forgetting which world is actually real. Story Themes: Hazelsong is a LitRPG novel that not only explores the fictional world of a realistic online fantasy realm but the life of a man suffering in silence from chronic pain and PTSD due to a significant physical injury and disability. Mental health is an important subject and we all know at least one person in our lives who has or is dealing with some form of mental illness. I plan on putting my best effort forward to represent these illnesses in a fair and accurate manner. Not as a cheap plot device to help make the protagonist more unique, but to help paint an accurate picture for those of us who have been lucky enough to not have to suffer in silence. About the Author: I am Ash Durra, general video game nerd and a connoisseur of fantasy and sci-fi of all shapes and sizes. Needless to say, I am not a professional author (B.S. and M.S. in Education, 8 years teaching). After really getting into LitRPG novels over the past several years, I found my way to Royal Road, which has inspired me to use my spare time to begin writing a story of my own creation. As this is a hobby, I am not writing and posting chapters on any kind of specific schedule at the moment, though my goal is to post on average 1-2 chapters a week. I am incredibly excited to share this story with others as I write it, and I look forward to any constructive feedback about how I can improve in my writing.
