《Pathetic || Seth Clearwater》Twenty nine

When Bella woke up the next morning, Ellis was halfway up a tree in round the front of the house. He was laughing at Seth, dangling a box from his hand. Seth's massive wolf had its front paws up against the trunk. His sandy coloured fur shaggy from spending the night in wolf form out in the woods. The whole pack had been spending the last three days camping around the Cullen house in order to protect Bella and Nessie. It had taken a toll on them.
Ellis giggled and swung his legs. He hoisted the black box further above his head, waving it tauntingly. "I guess you don't want the present then", he smirked. Seth whined, giving him puppy dog eyes. Ellis was just about to cave when the front door opened and Bella and Edward stepped out. Instantly, Seth jumped down and skunk off into the woods to join Leah, wary of the newborn. Ellis stayed still.
Bella looked good as a vampire. Her dark hair and pale skin were magnified by the transformation. Any plain, sickly beauty she'd had as a human had changed to being dark and seductive. Her scent had become different, no longer that of human prey. It was still nicely floral, but now it had a undercurrent of cloying sweetness. Alice had dressed her in a blue silk dress and any blood from her death was gone. She seemed more like a vampire years old, than that of a hunger mad newborn.
Ellis waved to her as she stepped barefoot onto the earth. "Hello Bella. Looking good". She smiled at him, displaying wickedly white fangs. As she looked him over, she paused for a moment. Her eyes widened as she took in the scars of his time with Victoria, now able to see them with new eyes. Ellis watched assessingly as she shook it off and her smile returned.
"Thank you Ellis", her new voice lilted.
"I'm just taking her hunting", Edward said as he stepped not her side. "Emmet said that the north was clear?"
Ellis nodded down at him. "Yeah. Both of us hunted there last night. It should be safe enough". Edward nodded. He turned and took Bella's hand, leading her away from the house.
When they were gone, Ellis jumped down to the earth. "It's weird", he spoke to Seth as the wolf emerged from the trees. "Knowing someone as a human, then as a vampire. The change is scary. It's like she's been amplified".
Seth huffed deeply. His breath blowing Ellis' hair into his eyes. Ellis ran a hand through the strands absentmindedly. "I guess I'll just have to give you your gift later", he muttered. Seth made a grumbling noise. "It's better if you stay in wolf form until we know how adjusted Bella is", Ellis explained. Seth huffed again and nuzzled his nose into Ellis' neck.

"Hey!" Ellis laughed as Seth licked a long wet patch from his collar bone to his jaw. "Stop that! You're going to ruin my tshirt". He pulled a face at his white shirt. Luckily it was one of the wide V neck ones so it avoided the wolf tongue.
"You're just a giant puppy you know", Ellis said jokingly. He leaned up, standing on his tippy toes to press a kiss to the tip of Seth's nose. "I'll give you the present later this evening okay?" Seth wagged his tail in agreement.
Ellis was in the living room with the rest of the Cullens when Bella and Edward returned a few hours later. Everyone was there apart from Rosalie who was with Reneesme and Jacob in another room. Seth and Leah prowled outside in case anything happened. He watched from his position between Emmet and Jasper as the couple entered the room. The three of them were stood with their backs to the windows, watching her in case she attacked. Bella entered first, with Edward shadowing her steps.
Like she did with Ellis, Bella took her time to properly look over her new family. If she had been surprised by Ellis' scars, she practically took a double take when it came to Jasper. She blinked as he smiled at her before moving her gaze on to Alice and Esme.
Edward had immediately crossed over to Carslie and explained what happened during the hunting trip. There were various noises of surprise when Edward explained that she had run away from her instinct to attack a stray hiker.
"She ran away?" Carslie repeated in disbelief. Ellis was impressed. He remembered what it was like to be a newborn, uncontrollable and wild. For Bella to completely disregard her instincts like that, well she must have a strong will. But judging from her experiences since meeting Edward, she definitely did.
"Edward", Bella said before he and Carslie could continue. "I want to see her".
Edward placed his hands on her shoulders. "Okay", he agreed. "She's been waiting to meet you". He told Bella a few warnings to be aware of as Rosalie and Jacob entered the room. But as soon as Bella's eyes alighted on her daughter, she stopped listening.
Nessie made baby noises as Rose gently placed her in her mother's arms. Bella gasped, reflexively culling her arms to hold her small body. "She's been growing at a unprecedented rate", Carslie explained. "She can eat human food but she seems to prefer blood. She also sleeps at night". His words went without a reaction. Bella completely besotted by her daughter.
"What was that?" She gasped as Nessie placed a hand to her face. Edward beamed proudly, eyes watching his family lovingly.
"That's her gift", he explained. Nessie must have shown her something more as Bella's lips stretched into a wide smile.

"Alright that's enough", Jacob grumbled. He moved forward to take Nessie from Bella's arms. She stepped back in refusal, hugging the baby closer to her chest.
"Jacob", Edward frowned. "She's doing great".
"Yeah, let's not push it", he muttered. He moved closer again and Bella leaned away. Nessie made a confused gurgle.
Bella looked up at him sharply. "What's your problem?" She asked.
"Tell her Jacob", Rosalie grinned.
Next to Ellis, Emmet muttered with a smirk. "Oh, this should be good".
"Bella", Edward gently took Nessie out of her arms as her face grew darker.
"Look um it's a wolf thing", Jacob stuttered nervously. Ellis took a step forward but Emmet's palm on his chest held him back.
"Look you know we have no control over it". Jacob let out a cry as Bella grabbed him by the back of the neck and walked him outside. Edward passed Nessie to Esme as the rest of the family followed her. Ellis sped up so that he was just behind them, slightly anxious about what was going to happen.
Bella threw Jacob off the porch and into the dirt. "You imprinted on my daughter!"
Jacob scrambled to his feet. "It wasn't my choice".
"She's just a baby!"
"It's not like that! Do you think Edward would let me live if it were?"
"I'm still debating", Edward muttered as he leaned eagerly against the railing. He was obviously enjoying the show. Ellis stepped nervously onto the steps behind Bella as she stormed onto the grass.
"I've held her once! One time Jacob! And already you think you have some moronic wolfy claim over her?" Bella was getting dangerously close to his face. She pushed him into the dirt.
Edward chuckled as Jacob stumbled to his feet. Seth and Leah came running out of the woods. Leah growled. "I'm fine Leah", Jacob reassured them. Ellis met Seth's eyes as he took moved to the bottom of the porch steps.
"Stay away from her!" Bella commanded.
"You know I can't do that". Another shove had Jacob rolling across the ground, but he was back up onto his feet.
"Stop her Edward", Esme muttered anxiously.
"It's fine", Edward grinned, completely in love. "She's amazing right?"
"Listen", Jacob cried as Bella began approaching him again. "Remember that need you had to be close to me a few days ago? It's gone right?"
"Long gone".
"Right! That was Nessie!" If anything, Jacobs words seemed to make Bella angrier.
"Nessie? You nicknamed my daughter after the lock ness monster!" She shrieked.
Jacob paled and held out his hands defensively. "No! That was Ellis!" He protested. But Bella wasn't listening. She lunged forward.
Ellis saw it before anyone else did. He saw the tensing of Seth's muscles just as he jumped in front of Jacob. Bella's force sent him colliding heavily into a tree with a sharp crack. Seth fell to the forest floor with a painful whine.
Ellis saw red. Bella barely had time to cover her mouth with her hand before she was tackled to the floor. Ellis twisted her arms behind her, pinning them behind her back as he straddled her waist. One of his hands were at her throat, fingers gripping her skin harshly. Bella wriggled but even with her newborn strength, was unable to get free.
"Ellis!" Edward cried. "Get off her!"
"She hurt Seth!" Ellis shouted wildly. His fingers kept their tight grip as Bella stared up at him with wide eyed.
"It was an accident", she croaked. "Seth! I'm so sorry". Seth whimpered as he got to his feet. He limped over to Leah, one leg pressed against his body. It was visibly broken. The bone lumpy under the skin. Ellis snarled and pressed down on her chest harder.
"Ellis", Carslie's calm voice called. "It's just a broken arm. He will heal". Hands pressed gently against his shoulders. With a angry huff, Ellis released her and strode over to Seth.
"Hey", he whispered as he ran his hands through Seth's fur. "You okay? Do you need help moving?" Seth whined lowly as he tried to walk. Ellis wrapped his arms around his chest, pressing his shoulder to his rib cage in order to let the massive wolf lean on him.
"Seth!" Bella said again as the two of them began walking to the other side of the house. Edward had helped her to her feet and Alice was dusting the mud off her dress. "I'm so sorry". She would have said more if Ellis' glare had not made her falter.
Ignoring the rest of the family, Ellis helped Seth walk round to the other side of the house. Once away from all the hubbub, Seth paused to shift. Ellis winced as Seth groaned in pain. The change visibly worsening his arm.
"Do you need any help?" Ellis asked as he grabbed one of the pairs of jeans from a bag by the back door. Seth grimaced in pain and nodded.
"You know", he panted as Ellis helped him get the jeans on. "I thought that the first time you messed with my pants would be a little sexier".
Ellis buttoned them and grinned. He straightened and pressed a kiss to Seth's cheek. "There's always next time", he promised. "Maybe you could help with my trousers?"
"That would be good", Seth moaned as he tried to move his arm. Ellis stopped him, placing his hand gently on his shoulder.
"Come on, let's get Carslie to take a look at you inside".

The Last Science [SE]
[SE has the same content as the original story, split into smaller chunks for easier reading. This story is on a temporary hiatus due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. I work in healthcare and unfortunately no longer have the freetime to continue posting on a regular basis. As soon as our workload decreases, I will return. Thanks for reading! 💙] No one ever knows the whole story. Deep in the forests of the Pacific Northwest, the fading town of Rallsburg stumbles upon an amazing discovery—magic itself. Faced with potentially world-shattering power, the people of Rallsburg keep the secret for themselves. Led by Rachel DuValle, a perpetually underestimated college student with grand ambitions, they seek to found a new society. The world beyond suspects nothing, but magic cannot stay hidden forever. A train arrives in Rallsburg carrying Alden Bensen, a directionless high school graduate. To him, magic could represent meaning for his life, an explanation for his empty existence. This potent force offers anyone the power to change humanity forever—or send it cascading into swift and total annihilation. The Last Science is an ongoing science-fiction / low-fantasy web novel series, focused on the modern world with a twist. New societies bud and grow, but the people who make them up are imperfect and flawed. The story includes elements of mystery, action, crime, interpersonal drama, relationships, philosophy, sociology, politics, and much more, all centered on the perspective characters driving the tale. This is the "Scraps Edition" of the story, where the chapters have been split up into bite-size chunks (roughly 1500-3000 words), for your convenience. The prose has been edited from its original form, with some improvements, but there are no content differences from the original. New chapters will be posted throughout each week starting on Friday and appearing on multiple days thereafter, depending on the length of the chapter. Content Warning (by request): This series delves into some topics and situations which may be upsetting for some readers. In American rating parlance, the narrative would be rated PG-13 (except for language), but some have noted the story can get pretty dark on occasion.
