The newborns were restless. Ellis watched them with a careful eye from his perch among the rafters. They skittered nervously in the barn, careful of any sunlight peeking through the cracked walls. Ellis scoffed to himself, amused that most of them believed the idea that they would be set alight by the suns rays. It was, frankly, a rather ridiculous myth. Although the reaction to garlic was just plain ludicrous. It was funny how humans believed such lies.
Ellis huffed a laugh as one of the newborns leapt back from a patch of sunlight on the ground. The girl's face was twisted as she hissed at the offending ground. She turned up to look at him, having heard his chuckles, and bared her pearly teeth. Ellis peeled his lips back in a quiet but ferocious snarl and she scuttled back. The newborns feared him. They would wince at every chunk of his bracelet, grimace at every tooth. It just made them easier to control. Even though Ellis was one of the youngest when he was turned, he held a lot more experience and power. Victoria loved him for it.
Speaking of the devil, Victoria chose that moment to waltz into the barn. Riley, like the loyal lapdog he was, by her side. Her eyes darted along each face until her eyes met his and she smiled. "Ellis. I have a job for you", she crooned. Ellis inwardly rolled his eyes at her tone and jumped down from the rafter. He landed evenly and straightened, sauntering over to the red head. Victoria ran a hand through his honey curls, a smile tearing their lips. "We will be attacking soon. I need you to go and watch the Cullens and report back to me any information", she instructed as her hands traced his body. Ellis tried not to shiver in disgust as she pressed herself up against him leaving barely any air between their bodies. She did not care about having an audience and ignored the others in the room.
"Remember", she reminded as one of her hands slipped into his trousers. "One of them can see what you will do, so rely on your instincts". Ellis let himself gasp as Victoria reached up and tugged off his shirt. He let her push him down on to the ground under the watching eyes of the newborns. He knew what she was doing. She was exerting dominance, displaying her control over him in front everyone. This had happened to Riley as week ago but he had seen it as an honour. Ellis viewed it as a intrusion, dirty and manipulative. Still, he resisted the urge to gag as she pulled off his clothes, then her own.

The newborns watched as Victoria moved. Her moans filled the silence. No one dared to make any noise as she pinned Ellis to the ground, too scared of her wrath, of what she might do if she was interrupted. She had lost her mate, and what was a monster before, she was worse now. They were also afraid of Ellis' stare. His eyes swooped along each person, almost daring them to speak. His face was full of fake pleasure as Victoria dug her hands into his marble skin, but his eyes were of steel.
Ellis found the Cullens standing out in the middle of a small clearing hidden in the woods. He watched, form concealed with his gift, as they seemed to be training. Two vampires, a blond male and a short black haired female, were sparring. Around the two stood five other vampires and an assembly of gigantic wolves. Hidden within the supernaturals stood a girl. Ellis' ears easily picked out her heartbeat and he could smell her floral scent on the wind.
He had heard about her from Victoria. Bella, human mate of the vampire named Edward. She had also told him about the wolves. How they were able to change from human to wolf as easily as putting on a coat. Out of deadly vampires, hundreds of years older than him and able to defeat him easily in hand to hand combat, he was more afraid of the wolves.
Bella was strategically positioned. On each of her sides was a protector, a russet wolf and a copper haired vampire. Edward was most probably the vampire on her right, Ellis reasoned. It would make sense to stay close to your mate. Bella was a plain looking human. Her long dark hair was limp and her pale skin was dull. She was not something that Ellis would find eye catching, but everyone to their own he guessed.
The blond vampire swiped at the female and she jumped, using the tree above them to swing down and wrap herself around her partner.Pecked him on the lips with a cheeky grin and he smiled back at her. Whilst this was happening, Ellis had been moving steadily closer to the female human. Inch by inch he crept closer. Sneaking around the russet wolf until he was within arms distance from grasping Bella's neck.

A vein pulsed under her creamy white skin and Ellis swallowed reflexively. A deep hunger was clawing at his throat, making itself known. Turning, he fixed his gaze on one of the wolves. This one was slightly smaller than the others, younger too. It's fur was a mix of brown and grey with patches of gold dotted across it's body. Ellis watched it, absorbing every detail until he was fully in control.
"Sorry to interrupt", Ellis spoke in a loud clear voicestartling the creatures around him. The Cullen's reacted, instantly forming a hissing circle around Bella. They bared their teeth at the air around them as they were unable to see the threat. The wolves reacted just as quickly. They leapt into a formation with a large black wolf at the head. Ellis chuckled and everyone moved again, positioning themselves so that they were facing the clear area where the sound originated from.
"I really am dreadfully sorry to interrupt but I must speak to you", Ellis spoke politely, his voice as clear as a bell.
The largest vampire, a huge burly male twice Ellis' size snarled. "Who are you? Show yourself!"
"But you might try to injure me", Ellis said, voice full of mock innocence. "But I will stay still. If you want me to".
"Why are you here?" An older vampire with blond hair stepped forward, voice calm. Ellis assumed that he must be Carlislehead of the coven.
"Victoria sent me to spy on you", Ellis hummed. He was scared, terrified even but he projected a certain cockiness in his voice, acting as if he wasn't hugely out numbered against vampires that could kill him in a second. "But I hate her. So I will help you if you help me get away from her".
This unsettled them. They looked confused but did not let down their guard. "How can we trust you?" Edward barked, one hand shielding Bella. She looked just as scared as Ellis was feeling.
"If I show myself, will you promise to hear me out?" Ellis was getting desperate. His anxiety and terror was rising, leaking into his voice. The others were sensing it and he heard one of the wolves let out a low deep growl. He could feel a prickly sensation in his eyes and if he was still human, he'd be crying.
"We will not harm you", Carlisle promised in a soothing tone, eyes fixed just to the left of where Ellis was. "Just let us see you".
As soon as his shield dropped, Ellis could feel everyone's eyes on him. He was in a defensive stance, arms out to protect himself. His legs twitched as he got ready to bolt. There were a few intakes of breath. Edward was now able to hear his thoughts, hear his fear. Bella had gasped out loud upon seeing him, muttering to herself "he's so young" in shock.
"It's alright", Carlisle soothed, arm outstretched as if he was approaching an injured animal. "We won't harm you".
Ellis took a step back, eyes darting wildly. A snap of a twig behind him made him turn his head and he recoiled. The wolves had managed to move up behind him, his panic having dulled his senses. Ellis' eyes met the honeyed brown of a wolf, the golden one and the wolves stopped. Another movement had Ellis reacting and he flipped upwards into a high backflip over the large male vampire. As soon as he landed two pairs of hands chained themselves around him, restraining him and forcing him to his knees. Ellis snarled and fought, fading in and out of sight in an effort to get away. But Edward and the long haired male held fast, preventing any movement.
"No!" Ellis howled. "Let me go! Let me go!"
"It's alright", Carlisle bent down in front of him, his golden eyes searing into Ellis' red. "We won't hurt you".

8 166The Shadow That Preludes Death (The Favoured)
Magic and fantastical beasts run wild on the countless worlds of the Fabric. Deities take an active interest in the Fabric. The Favoured, immortal mages of immense power vie for territory and power in the Fabric. Umbra a naive ward of the Duke is almost Grown and that means she will need to take an apprenticeship. The issue is she isn't good at anything, but she catches the eye of a master of magic, he thinks she might be one of the fabled Protectors the ones that would save them from the coming destruction. But Umbra isn't the hero everyone wants her to be. Updates will at least one chapter every two days. Notable Location Poliagoras. Poliagoras is the most important world in the Fabric partly due to it being the centre of everything both literally and metaphorically. Trade, commerce, travel, and politics are all conducted primarily on Poliagoras, it has the biggest city in the fabric stretching to cover almost the entire world. It also holds all the known Great portals in the Fabric which are the only way to travel to other worlds. Even without these things, Poliagoras would still be the most important world in the Fabric as it is home to the largest population of Favoured. They were mages chosen by the Deities and given the potential to become more than mortal. I cannot overstate how appreciated constructive criticism is. This is the first story I have written of my own volition so even a small comment on how I could improve would be great. The current title is most definitely a working one. I know it isn't great.
