《Flatlander》04 - LILIAN - CASTLE GREENTREE

From the third story of Greentree Keep, looking out a plate-glass window, Lilian watched as a party of horses rode through the castle gates. She brought up her hand and put the group between her thumb and index finger. If the Fates were just, she could pinch them right now, make them all go away. But when she pinched, and the horsemen remained, it further proved her theory that the Fates were not just and that she needed House wine.
But her father sent a man into the library, where she so often claimed to read and so often did not do more than drink, and had him remove all the wine he could find. She hadn’t expected that. She hadn’t expected that her father, Lord Halpern Bilt, knew her so well. Or maybe it wasn’t her father at all, but her mother. No matter. In either case, what they knew of her wasn’t enough to stop them from sending her away.
The riders meant marriage, and by the bannerman riding up to Greentree, House Bilt and House Jorbert were to join as one. That meant that she would go to Master Lance Jorbert of Redforest. She grimaced. Might as well throw her from the hoverstone now.
It was an advantageous match for her father. House Bilt’s ancestral hoverstone was the lowest of all hoverstones, its base floating two hundred hand-lengths above the Flatland. That was why he’d always been on the outskirts of political life; why he needed to marry off his daughter to gain some sense of status. The problem was that very few wanted to marry a girl whose dowry would be small and who, behind the grooms back, would be talket about--how the groom was wedding down. Literally, as all hoverstones were higher in height than hers. Not much better than Flatlanders, they would say; even the Highlands were higher, as their name implied.

Yes, it would be advantageous for her father, but she didn’t much care. He was a weasel and her mother--well, she’d been made to marry a weasel, make love to a weasel, have his children. A weasel’s wife. And yet, she thought bitterly, what does that make you?
“Daughter to a weasel,” she said aloud. She started at the sound of her own voice. It was over-strained, unwell. The library was empty, thank the Fates. She didn’t want anyone to hear her weak disposition. To combat her inner-self, she said, “But I won’t be for long.”
No, you’ll be a Jorbert.
She shuddered.
“Lilian,” her mother said sternly. She appeared at the door; or had she been there a while. “Your father requests you presence.”
“Requests? Tell him I will not go.”
“Demands.”
Lilian turned, curtsied. “Then who am I to deny him the honor of my presence.” She met her mothers eyes and did not drop her gaze until she had walked all the way past. She left her mother standing at the edge of the library door, huffing and puffing, as was her way. Yes, Lady Bilt had married a weasel. But Lilian supposed that in one way her mother was lucky: at least she had not been made to marry a young Jorbert.
A Jorbert. Monsters, all of them.

8 79Far Strider
A college student finds himself transported into a strange land with burgeoning magical powers, and is taken in by Ned Stark. Will he sink or swim in this medieval society, and will he ever get home? ====================== OC-insert without knowledge of Game of Thrones, new planeswalker. Slow power ramp. Second crossover: Star Wars (around chapter 39). ======================= As a note, I started this as a speed writing challenge to myself. The challenge was successful, and I managed 100,000+ words (as well as some character sheets in excel and such) over 10.5 days. Then I had to stop and let my hands recover from their burgeoning carpal tunnel syndrome. The story currently stands at around 150,000 words (or ~550 RRL pages) over 54 chapters; expect a chapter a day until I've caught up with the backlog. The focus of this story was not quality writing, and that hasn't changed. I mostly use it as my semi-guilty "I need to write something, but am not focused enough to write something good" story. Expect self-indulgent writing in general, and a bit of OP (or, well, more than just a bit if we're being honest), especially later in the story as the protagonist matures into a more full-blown Planeswalker. But if you're looking for something with a power-ramping protagonist romping around the place, something you'd be a bit embarrassed to admit liking (I know I am) but like anyways (and come on, this is RRL, so that probably describes just about everyone here who actually has shame), then this may be a nice bit of mental junk food for you.
8 150The Forgotten Lands
The lands close to the edge of the world, which is marked by an ever-present fog, are known as the barrens. A blighted land in which crops struggle to grow , with only the very poor and desperate to occupy the scarce villages. Naturally making it a haven for outlaws. It is in one of these barrens that a raider called Raegan was born and raised, feared and respected by the cut-throats he grew up around. The world has been told that magic is responsible for cursed regions known as the Forgotten Lands. For this reason anyone with the gift of magic are labelled abominations, a crime punishable by death and enforced by the Malleus Maleficarum, the worlds leading religion. Raegan is one such abomination, untrained in whatever magic he may have.Even in the lawless barrens those with magic aren't looked upon favourably, and so Raegan has kept his 'gift' hidden from all but his closest friend. But now he wants to leave behind the dangerous wasteland that is his home and everything he has ever known, in the effort to seek new experiences. No matter where this new path will take him, good or bad.
8 86The Bird and the Fool
Kesil is stranded very far indeed from his home. Despite a gift from the fair folk that allows him to understand and speak any language, he has very little idea of what’s going on around him (though he likes to pretend he does). But this doesn’t stop him from getting into trouble in the port city of Edazzo, in the ancient empire of Duri, and elsewhere, doing his best to find love, escape snares of ancient magic, and hopefully return home in the end.
8 71There Is No Mana In Space
The origin of mana has always been a mystery. It only deepened when magic and technology combined. When the first spaceship broke orbit, people were ecstatic only to fall silent when the spaceship simply stopped working and crashed back down. Luckily, one of the crew members survived and revealed something no one had thought possible. There was no mana in space. All of the ship's systems had failed because it relied on ambient mana to work. Now, thousands of years later, the solar system is littered with space stations, the planet Dust has been colonized and the races of the Oldworld thrive again, having recovered from the destruction of the Oldworld. They live, they level, and they learn. But still, the origin of mana is unknown, and puzzles the scientists of the world even more. Some planets have it, like Dust, while some have none. Why this is, no one knows… — Chapter schedule is MON / WED / SAT Happy reading and enjoy!
