《The Ship That Went to Sea》CH 7.1

The next days on board the Bonnie Bounty passed in relative peace. The ship continued its course down the coast. There were the everyday injuries which Petrianna saw to with just as much care as she gave to everything. Despite her careful healing work there were some that already saw and disliked her marked quietness. Lark was gaining a reputation as good fun with his concertina which broke up the idleness of the days and was serving to keep moral high. Tornas still had the shakes in his hands from drying out but spared every day with anyone that would typically Ruben or Erika, and talked with Petra each night over tea. The Northern girl had an oddness that hung about her surly but at the center of that haze was someone earnest, honest, and dutiful. Not to mention extremely well studied and skilled in the healing arts. His experience of healing growing up had been much different than her. He had never asked Petrianna her age directly but even factoring in that she was a quarter elf and might age slower she could not be over thirty years old and was likely closer to twenty. Either way she had knowledge well beyond the typical person of her years. Whatever Petra's age the tea had been working. The nightmares were gone. The memories didn't invade at night and that made it harder for them to haunt him during the day. Of course the dreams of her were also gone but he could search out those memories in the day. After all, the memories followed him around like a tune just as she said they would.

On this day, the sixth out at sea, Ruben and Erika were both otherwise occupied which meant Tor had no one to spar with and was practicing on his own. A voice interrupted him.

“Sailor, keeping sharp I see.” Sezjeck said.

“First mate” Tornas said stopping his drills and inclining his head.

“No one to spar with?” Sezjeck asked

“Ruben and Erika are both busy so I thought I'd practice by myself.” Tor said as he continued to spin his staff around.

“Well we can't have that can we?” the dragonborn asked and heaved his great ax from its place across his back and set in.

The human monk and the dragonborn barbarian could not look more different. The barbarian was tall and broad shouldered with thick powerful limbs, built like a strong stone tower. The monk was short and slight. There was a leanness verging on scrawniness to him bred by a childhood of deprivation that no amount of adult nourishment could shake off. Nonetheless he fought with elegance and power. There fighting styles too were wildly different. The one relied on strength and perseverance, the other on agility and dexterity. Tornas knew that if he wanted any chance in the fight he would need to disarm and wear out the first mate. So that is what he did. Sezjeck was much stronger than him but also a good deal slower. Tornas spun his staff around him in wide arcs to make distance and circled around dodging each blow of the great ax easily. “Just have to tire him out first, then get to work.” Tor thought as he circled and evaded Sezjeck. A crowd was gathering around them to watch. Which almost certainly meant that bets were being placed. Gambling was on thing that was ever present on a pirate ship. Tornas continued to fluidly dance around Sezjeck's blows but he was getting tired too. It was time to take the great axe out of the picture. Tor ducked in close to bring his staff up between Sezjeck's arms and with a quick twisting move spun the axe out of the dragon born's hands where it clattered to the ground. Tor quickly kicked it out of the way towards the now wrapt crowd. He whistled and tossed his staff away where another sailor caught it.

Tor bounced on his feet two of the dragonborn's strides away from him. Now it was time for part two. Sezjeck straightened himself up and settled into a fighting stance. “Not bad son, now lets finish this.” Sezjeck said. “oh absolutely” Tornas replied. Now all he had to do was get Sezjeck to attack first and the berserker did not make him wait for long. The first mate lunged at him and Tornas ducked took hold of the Sezjeck by the ankle and knocked him on to his front, and quickly stepped through and away.

“Do you ever consider why Ruben and Erika make themselves busy when you want to spar?” Sezjeck said jumping quickly to his feet.

“No, not really.” Tor said with a smile and bounced in place ready for another attack. The dragon born came at him again and Tornas was able to evade and put him on the ground again. Now it was time to finish things. Tor let Sezjeck come at him. He dodged one punch than a second and on the third, grabbed Sezjeck by the arm kicked his legs up around the dragonborn's neck and used his momentum to take him to the ground. Tor stood over the first mate with his arm twisted back behind him and a foot on his back.

“I yield, enough” Sezjeck said as he pounded the deck with his free hand .

Tornas released him from the hold helped him up.

“Well done son,” Sezjeck said taking him by the shoulders “you're sharper, it suits you.”

“You're bleeding” Tor replied smiling and pointing to Sezjeck's mouth.

“ I am,” he said wiping his lip with his thumb and seeing the blood. “I must have bit my lip. It's nothing.” he insisted

“It's not nothing” Tor said reaching up to run his finger threw the gash

“Gods below!” Sezjeck swore and swatted away Tor's hand “alright wheres Petrianna?”

“She's probably down below, come on I'll go with you” Tornas replied and walked with Sezjeck.
