《Life or Freedom》The taste of faliure

"Dammit!" yelled Mort, slamming his gun onto the table in anger.
"Why isn’t anybody here?" Mordred asked, looking at the other two in disarray.
"What do you mean? There are loads of people in the camera." Avery mumbled. Clicking could be heard before she spoke again in a disheartened tone.
"Never mind, it was just edited and changed somehow." She murmured.
"What now?" Milo asked Milo as he looked around for any sign of life. He picked up a piece of paper that stood out and read it with an angry frown on his face.
"If you are wondering where we are, the meeting was moved." He read, turning the note around. Mordred thumped down his gun again.
"How could we be so stupid?" He questioned in anger.
"Hey Mort, chill out, we will have another chance." Myra said in a calming tone, only to get cut off.
"We've had our chance. Myra! We had our chance and we fucked it up! " He yelled, not prepared for the fear that struck him when he thought of what his reaction would be.
"Shit." He mumbled, looking down.
‘He will hurt us. The entire team will suffer, and it's all my fault! Damn I’m so fucking ungrateful that he is doing this to help me-‘ His train of thought was interrupted by his brother’s voice.
"We are going to make our way back to the SDU." Ryder said sadly as he held open the door for the group. Mort gulped, following the team out.
Then he was outside. It was as if only a few seconds had passed.
"Okay, due to the failed mission, we have been tasked with checking out one of the areas that have had high Vizican sightings recently." Ryder announced with a sad smile as he picked up his bag, leading the group away from the building.

To cheer the group up, colourful chatter between Milo and Avery filled the air as they teased one another, acting as if they were kids as they ran beside a stream that trickled into the distance. Myra ran off to join them, inputting her words into the conversation. Whatever she said made Milo’s face redden as he turned to her, stuttering something back through embarrassment, Avery erupting in laughter.
"We are here. Quiet down." demanded Ryder in a serious tone. As you do with a leader, the others stopped their playful insults.
"This is point H, one of the points that have had the most Vizican sightings in the past year. I expect you all to be wary of your surroundings and to search for anything that could hint at why Vizican’s come here. It may just be for the shelter, but Aiden wanted us to double check, and that’s what we will do." Ryder announced, as nods erupted from the group of teenagers before him.
They ended up splitting into groups. Avery went with Ryder in one direction, while Milo, Myra, and Mordred went in the other, searching high and low for monsters with grey skin and bright eyes. Myra ended up going a bit ahead, still in the sightline of the boys. The sound of their footsteps filled the air as they continued walking.
"Mordred, please just tell me what’s going on." Milo spoke in an unusually worried tone. The boy was always curious; it was part of his nature. He had always wanted to know as much about an activity as he could before diving into it. However, Mordred was the opposite, not afraid to take risks.
"It's none of your business." He stated as he quickened his pace, still annoyed and worried about the failed mission and aiming to get away from the boy before he could say anything more. Sadly, for him, the boy did the same, matching his speed.

"I just want to help."
Mordred sighed.
"Stop focusing on me, focus on yourself." Mordred stated firmly as his eyes connected with Milo’s.
Milo, in response, rolled his eyes and looked around again.
"Mordred-"
"Milo" I don’t want to-"
"Mordred! Myra’s calling us, come on. " Milo yelled before running off, Mordred following soon after.
When they reached the area, they saw Myra on the ground as a silver-skinned creature, which they had all come to hate. They tried backing her up against a tree.
Milo picked up a knife from his pocket and threw it at the creature. They barely even dodged it, the knife slightly cutting their skin as green goo began making its way down the creature’s skin. In retaliation, the creature ran forward at Milo, kicking him in the chin before punching him in the gut, sending him to the ground. Mordred launched at the creature, only to get thrown onto the ground himself.
A hint of fear glimmered in the eyes of the beast as they backed away, running into the depths of the forest.
"Come on, we need to go after it!" Yelled Mort as he rose from the ground. Milo sighed, turning to Myra, who was in pain.
"You guys go, I’ve just hurt my leg, I will be fine." She reassured as she sat up against the tree she was previously being backed against, a weak smile on her face.
Mordred nodded as he stared, running through the woods, Milo following as they tracked the figure. Eventually, the figure kept looking back in suspicion, so the two boys ended up slowing down to ensure they weren’t spotted.
"We need to attack," Mort said with a scowl.
"This Vizican could be leading us somewhere important."
"It's walking aimlessly, Milo. Can’t we just attack the damn thing already? " He said as impatience slivered around in his tone, only to get cut off as he was pulled backwards, a hand over his mouth to keep him quiet.
Milo pulled Mordred into a nearby bush, the leaves pricking him in the neck as they settled into it. The minute the hand was removed from his mouth, words started falling out.
"Milo, what the hell was that?" He questioned
"Shut up and look." Milo said, pointing at someone approaching the scene.
A hooded person stood before them, most likely a rebel. Mordred growled as he prepared to launch out at them, only to get held back by Milo, who shook his head, still watching closely as the cloaked person pulled out a piece of bread for the monster, luring it in.
The monster took the bread from the ground, eating it as the person said something. Only mumbles of their voices could be heard from where they were currently sat, not enough to tell what they were saying to the creature. The person ended up getting the creature to follow them deeper into the forest, the two boys looking at each other before rising from the bush and following them.
Eventually the two boys lost them in the depths of the forest. They walked back towards where they had left Myra in frustration and empty handed.

The Voice of the World
Jason Elric used to be an ordinary college student living in the heart of San Francisco. He had a part time job, he played online games with friends he got along moderately well with, and he earned reasonably good grades. The worst he really had to worry about in life was turning in his coursework on time and not being late to class. Now, though? Now fighting for his life and running from a horde of giant frogs that want to make him their next meal is just another Tuesday. Thanks to a summoning ritual gone terribly right, Jason has found himself trapped in a world eerily similar to the role playing games games he used to play for fun. Unfortunately for the now ex-college student, everything happening around him is terrifyingly real and if he wants to survive, he’ll have to figure out how to exploit the system for his benefit before it’s too late. The Voice of the World is the first part of what is planned to be a multi-book, Isekai LitRPG story with crafting elements, set in the fantasy world known as Verdania. This is my first time posting online for public consumption, so bear with me as I work to find a style that people like. While I may occasionally write scenes that may deal with heavy concepts, expect this story to be primarily light hearted high fantasy. There will be a lot of common fantasy tropes involved, as this story got its start as a simple practice exercise, rather than any plan to actually post it. However, it’s grown on me, so I felt it’s worth sharing after all. Thus, if you’re looking for more serious/original/unusual stories, you might want to look elsewhere. For the rest of you, feel free to leave suggestions, as well as to point out grammar and spelling mistakes; I’ll do my best to make edits to correct them. I do my own editing currently, and it’s easy to miss things when you know what’s supposed to be there, so such call outs are highly encouraged. Content TLDR: No harems, probably no romance (unless it makes sense for the story later on) (it did, eventually), definitely no sex (keeping this PG-13 or close to it), limited profanity. Does/Will contain mixes of magic and technology (think Warhammer, Final Fantasy); copious amounts of blue tables; race, gender, and sexual equality concepts; crafting sequences; and (slightly, but not overbearingly) strong protagonists. If you don’t like these things, go elsewhere instead of downvoting people for content instead of writing quality. Update Time currently varies, due to personal injury, but the goal is 1/week on Wednesdays, with a possible smaller chapter on weekends if time/health permits.
