《The Zodians - Book 1: The Outlander》Raindrops of Death

A flash of lightning tears across the already dark sky. Suddenly, that blinding light flashes, clearly visible in the sky like the teeth of a devil. Each billowing black cloud seems to swallow the weak rays of sunlight trying to squeeze through each gap. Once more, the earth shakes. The clouds curl up, leaving a hole in the center. It is said that it is the eye of the devil. Scary, cruel things pour down through that eye witchcraft, temptations, things that can wear down people's minds. Then from that height, infinitely deep, pours down so many raindrops of mourning. Raindrops of death.

Herone Volrock reaches out to take the first drops of rain into her palm, she lifts her face, letting them wet the skin that had already bathed so many drops of blood, hoping they could wash them away, but somehow inside her nose still smell of the salty taste of fresh blood, and they seem to penetrate deeper. Herone turns to look at the frowning Phalanx Torricks, then turns eyes to her eleven comrades, all of whom are showing the same expression. Their expressions are both worried and expecting something on their faces. Eleven pairs of eyes are all fixed on the void in front of them, as if in a few moments, something big would happen to them.

“What do you think of me?”

Phalanx is surprised, he looks over at her, then sideways to make sure he is the one whom she is talking about. Then Phalanx replies:

“Why do you ask that? Right now?"

"I need to know. Who knows if we will survive this battle?” Herone laughs.

"Well...", Phalanx is a little embarrassed. He rolls his eyes for a moment, thinking, unable to do anything else but turn to look at her for a moment. It takes a few moments for Phalanx to open his mouth to answer. “You are still very beautiful… strong, determined…”

"So do you have any feelings towards me?", Herone cuts him off without hesitation.

"What?", Phalanx is surprised again by her. He understands what she is saying, but it is so sudden, it takes him by surprise.

“I wanted to have something to hold onto, a hope so I wouldn't let myself die at Lapunta's hand. Furthermore…”, Herone pauses. She turns to look at Phalanx, and at the same time catches his gaze on her as well. “I have been alone for forty-six years…”

Phalanx looks at Herone silently. That woman is also forty-six years old this year, but whenever he sees her, Herone still keeps the youthful appearance of a girl back then. He also misses her for fifty-two years, will this time… will he miss her again? Could this be the last time holding that silhouette…?

"I still love you, it hasn't changed just a thing," Phalanx gently answers Herone's question in a calm and slow voice. In his voice, there is an emotion that is both gentle and intense. Only knowing that Herone does not reply when she heard it, but the smile on her lips is as bright as the sun on a new dawn. “I say this to you not to give you any hopes to cling to. Besides… I've been alone for fifty-two years too”, Phalanx continues.

The rain is still heavy and seems to have no intention of stopping, and they are also steadfast against it, putting their faith in something that seems impossible. Lightning continues to rumble, ripping through the blackened sky. The wind howls, the trees sway and try to stick their roots in the ground so as not to be swept away by them. The sea surface is turbulent with fierce currents, the whirlpools are as deep as the devil's mouths waiting for the teeth full of iron fangs to bite into any unlucky prey that passes through it.
