《A Life to Save - Protection Detail Series Book #2》Chapter 11

Jasmine found her room without encountering anyone else in the passageways. Habitually glancing both ways before opening her door, she stepped into an ample space. The bed stood opposite the doorway; three bodies could sleep comfortably. The canopy reminded her of the storybook princess beds. The netting was soft to her wandering fingers, and the wooden floor shone in the sunlight coming through the large window. The view caught her attention, rolling green lawns, tall trees divided by a ribbon of water she guessed to be a river.

Dropping her backpack on the oversized sofa chair, Jasmine wandered into the adjoining room, discovering a bathroom she could only dream of. The towels were thick and fluffy, and the toiletries were fully stocked. This was indeed a home away from home. The massive bathtub beckoned to be used. Jasmine turned on the taps, selected a floral smelling bubble foam for the bath, and poured some into the slowly steaming water. The ache in her muscles and bones from her run-in with Valencia hummed on a cellular level, and a good soak would help restore some usage to her limbs. She left the water to run and opened her backpack, emptying it on the bed. Where were her clothes? Looking in the bag, she found nothing. What was going on? Why had her clothes been taken? A white piece of paper stuck out of a side pocket on her backpack. Carefully pulling it out, she read it.

"Open the cupboards," she murmured, turning in a circle until she found the built-in cupboards with sliding doors. "Fair enough."

Sliding a door open, Jasmine gasped, pants, tops, jackets, and shoes in corresponding colours. If her suspicions were correct, her sizes. Pulling a shirt from the rail, she checked ... it was her size. These were placed here for her, and everything was brand new. Who would do something like this? She swallowed the tears and rising emotion before they broke loose, leaving her a blubbering mess. Choosing an outfit, she returned to the bathroom, closed the door, stripped her clothes off and sank into the steaming foamy water.

"Oh yes," she sighed, "this is good ... just for a little while."

"Do you think they will give us what we need?" Birgit whispered.

"I don't know," Valencia whispered, "I feel we have made progress, but it depends on Breanna."

"Does she control us?" Birgit asked.

"No," Valencia said, sinking onto the couch, "she leads our group, but we make decisions together. She is … was Darcia's twin but nothing like Darcia."

"She was the one who first escaped the Facility," Birgit said.

"Yes, that is her," Valencia muttered, "we call it the madhouse."

"Well named," Birgit whispered, "very well named."

"She was the one who first escaped the Facility," Birgit said.

"Yes, that is her," Valencia muttered, "we call it the madhouse."

"Well named," Birgit whispered, "very well named. I just called it the pain factory, but I like yours better."

"Good description. Bre is also the one who put you in your place when you hurt Rose," Valencia said quietly, "she doesn't take well to her friends being harmed."

"Yes, I remember her," Birgit said, shifting uncomfortably, "she is powerful."

"She is, but she is also fair," Valencia said, "if you want to prove yourself to anyone, it will be her. The one unbroken rule we all go by is that no one uses their abilities against our family. We class family as everyone who comes to us for help and either goes on their way to as normal a life as possible or stays with us and joins the Agency."

"I understand," Birgit sighed, "you are very passionate about these people. I have placed you in an uncomfortable position with everyone. I'm sorry."

"You did, especially with Jesse," Valencia put their head back against a cushion, sighing, "I believe you'll fix everything. We need to fix everything. Perhaps Jesse will forgive me for whatever happened."

"That was my fault," Birgit said, "I pushed him away. I... didn't realise what it was that made him react the way he did. But when you were hurt by how he reacted when they came to explain our situation, I understood ... and I'm sorry."

"So it was nothing I did," Valencia said, "he only thinks it's me ..." she sighed, "a lot is going to have to be fixed. Let's start with making right what you messed up."

"Thank you," Birgit whispered, "I'm glad you don't think I'm weird."

"We're all weird," Valencia chuckled, "every one of us."

The pair fell silent. Waiting.

Jesse rolled his neck on tense shoulders. How could he have missed the duplicity in her personality? He was usually more observant than this.

Birgit.

That was the other person. Did he get to know her? Should he get to know her? If he wanted Valencia, he would need to embrace Birgit as well.

"What did you want to see me about?" Breanna asked, stopping behind Jesse.

"Tina has something to show you," he said quietly, keeping his eyes on the screen.

Breanna moved toward Tina. He heard the conversation happen, heard Breanna exclaim softly, and felt her pace away. Still, he watched as Valencia and Birgit sat in silence on the sofa.

"What are you going to do, Jesse?" Breanna asked, leaning against the desk next to him.

"It's not up to me whether they get the information," he said, staring at the screen, "that is why I called you."

"Tina is already sending through the information," Breanna said quietly, "I'm talking about what you will do about Valencia and Birgit?"

"There is nothing to do," Jesse sighed, "this time, it will have to be her call."

"This time?" Breanna looked at him hard, "so last time you made a move."

Jesse nodded, watching the screen as Valencia and Birgit stood looking at the screen.

"Are you going to talk to them personally?" Jesse asked.

"Maybe," Breanna said, "we'll see what they come up with first."

"Fair enough," Jesse said, "they're back on."

Tina stood moving next to Jesse's seat, "It has been set to record every time they speak."

"Who did that?" Breanna asked.

"One of Craig's team," Tina said quietly.

Silence fell as Valencia / Birgit came toward the camera.

Valencia looked up at the camera, "Thank you for trusting us with that information."

"We would like to chat about it," Birgit said, "between us, we feel we have a way of solving several issues. Valencia says we have a few problems, not only those we caused."

"When we have thought out a strategy which may save everyone some time and a lot of effort," Valencia emphasised the last few words. "We would like to chat with Breanna, Craig and Michael. Please bring whatever protection you think you need."

"Why would they need protection?" Birgit asked.

"Last time you tried to take out Breanna," Valencia said, "you hurt Rose, and before that, you put Jasmine in the infirmary."

"Oh," Birgit sighed, "then I agree with Valencia. We don't want you to fear us."

"Us?" Valencia scoffed, "we mean ...you."

"Fair enough," Birgit sighed, "I don't want anyone to fear me. Happy?"

"Ecstatic," Valencia said, "now let's get to work."

They turned to look at the screen as words scrolled.

"Phoenix will be here tonight. We meet tomorrow night."

"The Phoenix, oh dear," Birgit muttered.

"You know him?" Valencia asked.

"Yep, he and I had a … moment," Birgit struggled with the words.

"A good moment or a bad moment?" Valencia asked.

"An in-between moment..." Birgit whispered nervously.

"You and I will need to talk," Valencia said quietly, turning to the camera, "we look forward to seeing Phoenix if you'd prefer to bring him as protection."

"Heavens," Birgit muttered nervously before nodding "... yes," Birgit said, "that will be fine. Valencia and I have a lot of hard work ahead of us."

They walked away, scooping up their journal as they walked into the kitchen. Jesse watched Valencia punch in a food order while telling Birgit to choose the beverage. A smile tugged against his lips. That was more the Valencia he knew.

Jasmine ran her hands over the softness of her new clothes. It had been a long time since she had enjoyed wearing clothes like this. While absently sifting through her items on the bed, she noticed that her personal belongings were gone. Her brushes. Her toiletries. Everything. Sliding open another door, she shook her head. Everything had been replaced with brand new items. Why would this happen?

The only thing that was still hers was the pile of envelopes. Lifting them from the bed, sifting through them, and dropping them into separate piles. Picking up the utility bills and sighing, wondering how they would be paid. A frown puckered; they were already open. Carefully pulling out one and finding a second sheet stapled to the account. Jasmine gasped as she took in the second sheet.

"It's paid in full," she whispered, dropping the account on the bed and opening the next one.

Slowly she sank to the edge of the bed staring at the pile, "All paid."

After months of struggling, planning and worrying, she was left with nothing but an overwhelming sense of gratitude for someone's kindness. A gesture she was unused to and was uncertain of how to process. Absently she pulled the multi stamped envelope toward her, opening it and reading the typed page.

It was from her father's attorney, as she had suspected, advising of her father's disappearance and that all property in his vast Estate now belonged to her. Shaking her head, she tried to understand precisely what that meant. The second sheet of paper accompanied the letter; her eye quickly read the list of properties before resting on the figure at the bottom of the page.

"No way," she stood staring at the page in a daze. "That cannot be. He never sold anything, including that damned island ... that is a lot of money." Dropping the letting on the pile of mail and reaching for the envelope she suspected was the last from her contact, "Which of you sent me this…" unfolding it, she read quickly, "what?"

Glancing around the room, she tried to understand what was being told in the cryptic message. Was it a poem? Was it a code?

"Perhaps Breanna can help," she sighed, pushing her feet into brand new trainers, folding the note into her hand, and leaving the room.

Craig stood watching the woman in Darcia's old room. The memories those padded walls invoked made him shudder. He remembered his mother asking his father if it was necessary; his father's answer had been a silent stare before resuming the padding of that room.

"It looks like Valencia found a way," Craig said quietly, "do we trust this?"

"We shall see," Breanna said, "Jesse, both David and yourself are coming tomorrow."

"I don't think I should," Jesse said quietly, "Val may respond in her usual way, and Birgit may either interfere or act out."

"I hear you," Breanna said, "you're still coming."

"Craig, can you talk some sense into her," Jesse muttered, pushing away from the station he had used for the past two days, "I'm going to get coffee. Tina, please record anything that happens."

"Jesse," Breanna called after him as he left the tech room. She made to follow him, but Craig stepped in front of her shaking his head. She stepped around him. He grabbed her arm. Stopping her.

"Let go of me," she muttered.

"He needs time," Craig said quietly, "the love of his life has an extra appendage, and he hasn't slept in two days. You will not win this war.""

"This isn't going to be a war," Breanna said, "I just want to talk to him."

"No," Craig shook his head, still holding her arm, "you don't want to listen to what he is saying. What happens if Valencia hugs him like she usually does and Birgit throws a tantrum?"

Breanna sighed, "You think Birgit was in control of the incident with Rose."

"According to the last footage," Craig said, "I would say so."

"Do we even know what her abilities are?" Tina asked.

"I think Val knows," Breanna murmured, thinking over the conversation she had just seen.

"Just a short time ago, she threatened to kill Val," Craig said, "do we trust this Birgit?"

"Although she was threatening, it seemed more like a tantrum than an actual threat," Breanna said, "as far as trusting her ... like everyone who has joined, Birgit will have to earn it."
