《Divine Quest》Chapter 7

Mist woke up to being kicked in the forehead. As her eyes opened, Bill's foot paused before resuming its kicks.
“I am sorry.” Mist exclaimed before bowing towards Bill. She couldn't seem him roll his eyes at her antics.
“Get up and get your alchemy set.” Bill walked back towards Dai, searching the pants for something. It was only when Bill actively worked with Dai that her training kicked in.
The human was dressed strangely. His shirt had been torn to provide a bandage for her master..for Meyer and to help splint Pothos' leg. It was of a dark, uniform color with letters in a language should could not speak. The pants were also strange. They were blue and much more rugged than any other clothing she had seen outside of armor. Getting closer she could see the tight weave of cotton. The shoes were also different. They had a thick sole of a dark material attached to a leather covering. They were the most expensive boots she had ever seen.
Before she could inquire about the unique clothes that Dai was wearing, Bill caught her attention.
“What do you have for bases and reagents?” He asked her
Snapping into focus, Mist opened her pack and removed the portable alchemy set. It really was just a flask with a simple still and condenser. Next she removed the reagent box. It was barely two hands wide. Opening it, she found most of the reagents to be gone, leaving only a couple of powders. Finally she grabbed the box containing her bases. Or rather, base as the rest had been used up.
Bill looked over his options before tsking in disappointment.
“You have next to nothing.” He began before looking around the shed. It was filled with gardening supplies. He puttered about before finding some clipping resting in a pile next to some shears. He brought them over as she saw they were potato leaves. He continued his search before returning to her.
“I need a mint of some type and a bottle.”
“What type of mint, and what are you making?” Mist began. “I don't know of any recipes that require potato leaves.”

“Is that what these are?” Bill replied, looking at the pile of leaves. “I just needed leaves.”
“Just...leaves...” Mist repeated. She decided against asking for more information as she scanned her reagents. There wasn't anything that was technically a mint, but she did have something called Dragon Mint. A bottle was easier as she had a couple emptied from the last glass maker she visited. She handed over the bottle before gesturing at the reagent.
“That's Dragon Mint. Its not actually mint but it makes your mouth feel on fire if you eat it.”
“But it's called mint?” Bill inquired.
“That is one of its name.” Mist hesitantly responded.
Bill simply collected some before placing the leaves and the Dragon Mint in the bottle. He then walked over to Dai, sticking his finger in the man's mouth. Bill wiped off the drool onto the final leaf before shoving it into the bottle. A quick shake caused everything to liquefy before her eyes. The mass of leaves and powder just dissolved, turning into a smooth green liquid.
“Too runny for external use.” Bill mumbled before pouring it down the unconscious man's throat. He was...moderately successful. A portion of the potion escaped and caused a sizzling sound as it burned the skin around Dai's mouth.
“You weren't lying about fire in your mouth.” Bill laughed as Dai coughed out literal flames. Mist didn't think her eyes could get any wider.
“What...what was that?” Mist whispered. When Bill didn't respond she tried again louder before he looked up at her.
“It was a potion. It should have countered the itching from the goblin-pox. I mean, he technically didn't have the magic to properly infuse it but then it was entering his system. It should take whatever it needs from his body as he recovers.”
“How did you make a potion from junk you found in a shed?” She demanded of him.
“Oh, that's because we're Alchemists.” Bill replied.
“I'm an alchemist and I couldn't do that.” Mist countered. That only caused Bill to frown as he walked towards her.
“If you're an Alchemist than why did Morty make me?” Bill walked around Mist, muttering under his breath. Mist felt increasingly uncomfortable as Bill didn't stop after one pass.

“Where's your class mark?” He asked.
“On my back, like everyone's.” Mist replied.
“Oh.” Bill paused before looking towards Dai. “I suppose I can't do anything then before he wakes up. There is no way I can move that guy.” As if agreeing with him, Dai burped fire. “And I shouldn't do that until the potion stops working.”
With little fan fare, Bill shoved his head up the back of Mist's shirt. Mist, understandably, squealed and jumped, causing Bill to fall. He looked up at her glaring face.
“Why do you have three marks?” He asked the irate goblin.
“Everyone has three. A class, a body, and a profession.” Mist explained through gritted teeth. “Why did you stick your head under my shirt?”
“I was checking your mark. I don't know what you are but you're not an Alchemist.”
The old word bounced around Mist's head. It sounded like her profession, but also something more. Something beyond just refining materials.
“I'm a magic user.” Mist clarified.
“Huh, that should be Wizard. Dai's an Alchemist. That's how we could do what we did with the potions.”
Mist attempted to twist this new information to conform to what she knew of the world, but it was at that point the door slammed open revealing the elders. Mist instantly dropped down, bowing before the greatest of her clan. The three great goblins looked at a bored Bill.
“You will come with us.” The front most demanded before turning around.
“I'm not leaving Dai.” Bill countered. The three elders stopped before looking back at him.
“He will be protected. We wish to discuss why you are here and your quest.”
“That would be better when Dai is awake.”
“Why do you require the deviant.” A different elder asked.
Bill's eyes flashed and his little hands clenched into fists. He visibly took a deep breath before responding.
“Dai and I will remain until he awakes. Then we are leaving. We require nothing more from you.”
“Why you...” The third elder began to stomp towards the familiar before a pair of spears blocked his path.
“No goblin will harm a blood goblin.” The guard to the left explained. “It is the law of the clans.”
A groan from the back of the shack caused everyone to pause. All eyes turned to Dai as he sat up. He burped out another burst of flame before his eyes focused on Bill.
“What happened?” He asked the little guy.
“Glad you're awake.” Bill responded. “These fine goblins were just explaining we need to leave.”
David blinked multiple times before his shoulder fell. With an audible groan, he attempted to get up, only finding the shed was much smaller than he was. Instead, he crawled along the floor until he could get out of the cramped interior.
Once outside, he stretched, knuckles pressing deep into his back. He twisted from side to side before bending down and picking up Bill.
“If we need to go we need to go.” David answered before nodding at each of the goblins. He even ignored the spears that were now directed at him. “Now, which way.”
Bill pointed to the direction they came from. With little fan fare, David walked in the direction.
“Thanks for your help.” He called back to them, waving without looking.
The six goblins stared at the deviant as he casually walked away.
“Where do you think your going?” Demanded the third elder.
“You said I gotta go.” David answered, looking back to them. “So I'm going. As to where I am going,” At that David paused. “I am off to find a 'painting of a talking bug' and to 'put the chest disk on the webbed box'.” Nodding as if to confirm it to himself, David continued walking away from them. Looking back he would have seen six shocked faces as this human spoke in the goblin's Old Tongue.
It was only after he left the village that Mist collected herself enough to chase after the strange duo. She needed to know what they knew.

The Core of a Factory
An abandoned steampunk arms factory, in the middle of a conflict torn former state of the Empire it served, gains a soul. This transforms it into a Lord, capable of turning land into power. Beset by enemies on all sides it must figure out how to win the war its creators lost a century ago. This is a progressive Dungeon Core novel (which is to say the core will progress and expand in scale, eventually) across multiple dimensions with different characteristics (e.g. steampunk, magic, mythological). It has rationalist leanings (paragraphs of reasoning) and litrpg leanings (there are stat blocks). The core game mechanical idea is something like "what if different flavors of magic power actually did come from controlling land" and then the story is: "what if there was a flavorless (artifact deck) dungeon core". Chapters will be relatively short (my aim is that in three column format each would fit on a wide screen monitor), the first few chapters - setting up the main character and mechanics - are currently the longest in the entire series. I write chapters in blocks, and then release them one a weekday (M-F; 6 PM GMT, unless RoyalRoad's publish thing screws up) until I run out. There may be a few days of gaps here and there if someone finds an egregious error I have to re-write around or if I am behind. In general though one can read this once a weekend. I may do slight retconns and edits, I'll make sure to put it in an authors note if I do.
