《Fortuna Sands》EXCERPT 1-8: LUCKY STARS
Advertisement
Going back to the subject of Luck Streaks and Luck Breaks, there is rumor that these events may not be triggered by specific criteria but by the stars themselves. Much like ancient astrology, Fortuna Sands has developed an intrigue sequence of stars that can reach with a specific skill that is both unique to find and harder to achieve. Although this theory has neither been confirmed or denied, it is not uncommon to find such freeform skills that can be considered fortunetelling to identify if someone has good luck or bad luck on their side.
On a Lucky Day, no Jinx will attack you or any memory of your party unless provoked and this can be considered a blessing or a curse. On one hand, if you are low on resources or wish not to participate in random encounters a player with the mark of the Lucky Day will remain unharmed for the entire day. While this can allow you to be relatively safe, this also means that a player can not learn new skills since blessing or curse will not allow teaching. This day can happen up to 11 times in one year or never at all and is often hard to identify, but some players use this opportunity to relax or engage in alternate activities.
Contrary to a Luck Day there are days that are plagued with bad omens known as Luck Devil. That means that no matter how sneaky or stealth you are, Cursed NPCs will be fixated on your location. It is recommended to be near Green Zone or other safe locations on days like this, as the relentless assault can ensnare and quickly deplete resources. However, constant combat can increase the odds of acquiring new skills so if resources are available, then many players will take the time to ensure endless conflict to acquire them. This is due the odds of acquiring new skills being reduced from 1 in 1000, to 1 in 100 attempts.

Then there is a sign that is so legendary that it has only been identified 5 times in all Fortuna Sands history. The Lucky Star that rises in the twilight sky is said to be attached to specific players so much that luck will always be in their favor whether good or bad. This only occurs when the player is at the right place and time when the Lucky Star shines in the right district. However, this means that a player can learn, achieve, or summon the oddest of outcomes in their favor when things seem their worst. Those who are said to be blessed by the Lucky star will often follow it to certain districts at certain times to increase their chances, but nobody knows when or where it will occur.
In all of these circumstances, Luck can lead to fortune or disgrace depending on how you use it. “It is hard to quantify luck when considering the human factor,” one Fortuna Sands developer said. “Numbers can be finite, but there are some things that not even programming can predict. That is why Fortuna is so strong, because anything can happen at any time...You just never know when.”

Only one among them is the real ninth, but all of them will have to grow up in a world where they are fugitives. Kalen, once fated to die, is now an Orellen heir in hiding. And he is determined to survive, even if he has to master his strange new powers to do it. The Last Orellen is a long, character-focused progression fantasy set in a vast universe about a boy's journey to become a powerful mage. Reviews are deeply appreciated. Please do not repost my work elsewhere without my written permission. What type of reader is this book for? You might enjoy The Last Orellen if you like... Clever and resourceful protagonists. Big fantasy worlds. Multiple cultures, lots of characters, many different types of magic--this story is expansive rather than closely focused on a narrow storyline. Progression fantasy that takes its time. Our main character will be progressing through magical ranks, but this is going to be a lengthy story. If you're more about the journey than the destination, this might be the book for you. [participant in the Royal Road Writathon challenge]
