《Legacy of Earth》Chapter 3 – Memento Mori

During his younger years, his school made a Field Trip to an old decommissioned Sovereign Carrier and he can still remember vividly what the ship was like on the inside as they made their way to the bridge, Alon could not help but admire the interior of the ship as the corridors were small enough for three people in contrast to the massive halls of the Sovereign styled ships. The Walls and ceilings were gunmetal grey while the floor was icy blue, giving off this small comforting vibe while at the same time not making it claustrophobic for any of the crew.
Upon reaching the bridge they two found a different sight altogether, instead of the same tight spaces that the interiors were like. The bridge itself was larger, enough to fit ten or more people inside on the side and at the centre stood Tsuna and an older man standing next to one another.
"How are you feeling?" The Older man asked him.
"A little better thanks to the efforts of your Medical Officer," Alon joked causing both Tsuna and the Older Man to share a chuckle while an annoyed throat-clearing from Marina was present.
"Miss Weissman can inspire her patients to recover faster than expected," The Older Man said with a smile but then paused as if to remember something important. "Ah forgive me, allow me to introduce myself."
"My name is Hayato Sumeragi," he bowed before him. "I am the Captain of the Luna Sea and Commander-in-chief of the Memento Mori."
"The what?" Both Alon and Marina asked in confusion.
"We're an Independent Paramilitary Organization to end the Principality-Sovereign War by fighting both sides," Tsuna explained in a heartbeat as if he had expected them to react that way. "I know you have tons of questions in mind but for now you need to listen to my explanation of the whole thing."
Well you're right I do have tons of questions, Alon said as Tsuna gestured them to look at a nearby Star Map a large holographic table that contains the known wider Galaxy through the power of the Lighthouse System, a series of automated satellites that allow all ships regardless of affiliation to navigate the galaxy the only problem is that modifying or changing the System to one faction's advantage is difficult to understand as the technology dates far back rending them almost a relic of a bygone era.
"What do you know about the goals of the Neo Galiliean Principality and the Greater Ariesian Sovereign?" Tsuna asked the two of them as the Map had split showing a map of both the planets of Mars and Jupiter bearing each of their flags.
"I don't know anything about the Principality but I do know that the Sovereign aims to bring the Terran Federation back towards its former glory from what I heard," Alon said that was a major understatement as they are pretty much exposed to State propaganda that how what they are doing is right and just and anyone that stands in their way, namely the Principality, is wrong and are only after for the wealth that comes with the Legacy of Earth. How he and his sister aren't fully into the state propaganda is because their parents try their best to keep them informed about the goings of other nations and their say in the grand scheme of things.

It's this kind of mindset that left Alon an outcast because he was more vocal with his interest in exploring the Galaxy and admits that he only aims to become a cadet to see the galaxy and not for patriotic reasons like the rest of his batch who expressed a wish to join the Academy. Meanwhile, his sister kept it a secret and often blends into the crowd agreeing to prevent social suicide like what he went through during his education.
"Well, to put it bluntly, they both aim for the same thing," Tsuna explained to them as it returned to the Heliocentric model that is the known galaxy. "They all aim to take over the Galaxy under the pretence as their claims as to the heirs of Earth."
"What's wrong with that?" Alon asked letting go of his support for Marina and leaning on the Star Map to focus on Earth which looked like a frozen wasteland due to years of nuclear winter plaguing the planet, for a time he had learned that such a planet was once blue and green representing a vibrant and beautiful world.
"That's because it's a farce, both sides don't care about the Legacy of Earth." Both of them turned to find Hayato walking toward them with a smile. "They're only using it for public relations, if they are bent on restoring the old Terran Way then they'd use a democratic system that the Federation is known for. Instead, they opted for a Monarchic and Oligarchic system of Government, with the leaders at the top not caring for the people who suffer tirelessly but look up to them as the leaders of their nations."
"And those who don't agree with them?" Alon asked but he knew the answer already as evidence of how the Orthoses held little regard for his family over a possible misunderstanding and misinformation. Tsuna was right, if he had agreed to their terms they would have been most likely killed for such a little mistake. Hayato frowned as he reached into his pocket and pulled out various pictures, all of them in various locations but they were all the same thing as he handed them to Alon.
Concentration Camps.
All of them showed many civilians being forced to hard labour, torture, and then a slow and painful execution. The sight alone made him sick that the hand that held the pictures just fell limply to the side as the pictures scattered to the ground causing Marina to look at them in curiosity.
"Don't look," Alon said in a low voice but he knew that wouldn't stop Marina who took a step back and lost her balance causing her to fall to the ground. No doubt had Alon chosen to agree with the Orthus Leader earlier they would have most likely suffered such a fate.
"Those were taken on various off-world moons and asteroids, hidden away from the eyes of the public." He elaborated as he helped Marina stand up and then began to pick up the fallen pictures of the Concentration Camps and slipped them back into his pocket.
"Then why do you fight?" Alon asked if the Sovereign and Principality were not above such atrocities then what makes Memento Mori any different from them?
"To remind them that following the footsteps of Old Earth would lead them to nothing but death and ruin," Hayato said as he leaned on the map with a grim look on his face. "Do you ever know what it's like on the twilight days of Earth?"

Alon stayed silent, still processing his words. Stop them from following the path of ruin? That makes them just as pretentious as the people they are fighting. But he listened to Hayato's explanation further.
"My Father, the man who helped found Memento Mori alongside my Grandfather was just three years old when he saw the final days of Earth." He continued as but he had a distant look on his face as if he can picture the events. "He told me that the sky was blood red instead of the bright blue sky that Earth was known for, the ground shook as dozens if not thousands of Mechs collapsed on the ground, he can hear even from the Ship as they escaped the sounds of gunfire all around him as they continued the fight on both the ground and on the air."
"Suffice to say it was hell." Hayato finished as he stood up and regained his composure to look at Alon with the same smile as before. "Regardless of whether or not one of the two wins, that will be what their greed will lead them. We call ourselves Memento Mori because it means 'Remember Death' a reminder that they too will fall and when they fall it will be catastrophic."
"Won't that mean you're against progress?" Marina questioned causing Alon to look at her who was silent the whole time.
"Not quite, Memento Mori is formed to prevent people from emulating and using the name of Earth for progress and to justify anything that they wanted. We should remember Earth for what it was, not to bring it back." Tsuna spoke to counter her own words.
"That's enough for today, I'll give you a few hours to think this through," Hayato said clearing his throat and nodding at a pair of Soldiers who escorted them out of the Bridge.
[Legacy of Earth]
Alon just sat there in silence as Marina explained their situation, especially about the ideals and motivations of the Memento Mori. But Alon just sat by his bed in deep silence while thinking about his situation and there was only one conclusion that he can think of.
Everyone in Memento Mori is a bunch of self-righteous morons. Alon was screaming to himself as crossed his fingers while taking a deep breath as he mentally lectured himself that all this was bought upon himself.
But I can't just back down now, I told Takamori that I'll join if they save my family. Had things gone differently? Alon thought turning towards his family who had a collective look of confusion as they continued to listen to Marina explain to them. I would most definitely turn it down.
Ah, what the hell, I reap what I had sown. Alon said standing up and walking towards his parents and Marina.
"Everyone in Memento Mori is a bunch of self-righteous morons," Alon said without hesitation and caring little to the Pair of Soldiers exchanging looks and he can notice them grip their guns uneasily.
"But compared to death and torture I am very much willing to work for them to ensure our safety." Alon crossed his arms and turned to the two soldiers who were watching them discuss all this. "I'm joining, who should I—!"
Boom!
Everyone was thrown off-balance as though the Luna Sea had been taking fire from enemies, one of the Soldiers looked at Alon and then at the other.
"Keep an eye on his family, I'll need to take the kid to the Hangar." The Soldier said earning a confused 'What?!' from Alon as they took him by the arm and immediately dragged him towards the Hangar.
"I read your file and I found out you have a Gestalt Adapter at your back, and we could use someone with that right now." The Soldier replied taking off their helmet to reveal a young woman, probably around the same age as Marina or maybe even his age taking him by surprise as she threw her helmet to the side.
The two eventually made their way towards the Hangar to find Tsuna and another Pilot arguing with an Engineer regarding the current state of the Mechs at hand.
The Pilot was blond hair and cold blue eyes and looked a few years older than Tsuna meanwhile the Engineer was an older gentleman in his thirties with silver hair and a neatly trimmed beard.nd
"Wu!" The Soldier called to the Engineer. "This guy has a Gestalt Adapter and he's agreed to join us."
"He did?" Tsuna and the other Pilot asked in shock.
"Yeah just get him oriented into the thing I'll get him a suit!" She said as she ran off grabbing a suit for him to wear leaving Alon under the stares of Wu the Engineer, Tsuna and the other Pilot.
"Uh yeah I made up my mind, I'm joining and I'm here to help. Where are the Turrets?" Alon said looking around as he looked around. He remembered in the field trip that the standard Sovereign Carriers have the Capacity of holding Ten Mechs as a whole from what Alon can tell the hangar only contains three and two shuttles.
"We don't—"
Boom!
The Ship rocked again from the impact of the fire coming causing the four of them to Stumble as the Soldier returned with a one size fits all suit for Alon to wear.
"Look we don't have time to explain to you," The other Pilot said grabbing him by the shoulders. "The Luna Sea is not fit for combat just for high mobility transportation, and if you're joining us then I need you to put that suit on and help us fend off the Orthoses from destroying this."
"Fine but if we live this through I want special conditions for my joining," Alon said taking the suit and beginning to strip down to his boxers as he put on the suit in front of them.
"If you managed to successfully save us from the Sovereign then I'll gladly make sure those conditions are met." The Pilot sarcastically replied as he nodded to Wu as he went off preparing another Mech as he climbed into it.
"Do you even know Piloting?" Tsuna asked in a confused voice.
"No, but I have my Gestalt Adapter and that's the second-best thing," Alon said finishing up putting on the suit earning a concerned sigh from Tsuna. How hard can flying a Mech can be? Alon thought as he followed Tsuna towards the assigned Mech he was on.

Overseer (Dwarf Fortress x Worm)
A young woman gains the power to make elements of a saved game real. She must then survive the assault of a coordinated attack by some of the deadliest parahumans on the planet - he same group of murderhobos that caused her the mental trauma that resulted in her gaining her powers to begin with. This is a crossover fiction between the most complicated game ever created, 'Dwarf Fortress' by Toady One, and an extensive grimdark superpower genre serial fiction called 'Worm' by Wildbow. It is violent and there are some references to sex in it, so it's probably not fit for young children to read, and persons not familiar with Dwarf Fortress or Worm might be confused by some elements, but I feel confident that it stands reasonably well on it's own. This crossover is complete. I posted it here in it's entirety all at once. I hope you all enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it.
