《The Void Kingdom》Ch 4 | Dragon Fruit

Wang Ming walked ahead, headed for the shaggy vendor and bent down to closely observe the dragon fruit kept on the mat.
'It doesn't look like a model or some kind of antique… Is it real?', He squinted his eyes while he continued observing the fruit from all the angles.
The dragon fruit was quite normal and looked freshly picked. Not something that should belong to a street vendor selling antique counterfeits. Then why was it kept here?
"Gentleman here with the broken hand, are you going to keep looking at my fruit or will you buy it?" The shaggy man suddenly spoke in a low and lazy voice but due to some unknown reason, it was as if he was directly speaking into ears, his voice sounded like loud thunder.
With a jolt, Wang Ming lifted his head to look at the shining, bright and black eyes of the vendor. His looks and charm of his eyes didn't match in the slightest, suggesting that the man was anything but ordinary.
As if caught into a sinking ship, Wang Ming felt if he was drifting away slowly. He continued to stare in the eyes of the vendor for about half a minute before he gained back his consciousness.
The vendor smiled slightly and then picked up the dragon fruit before passing it to Wang Ming, "This is your reward."
"Reward?" Wang Ming was startled, as his face was suddenly painted in confusion and chaos.
The shaggy vendor didn't answer him or speak anything else. He wrapped up his mat along with the antique-like objects on it and then left slowly.
"..."
Wang Ming didn't even get a chance to speak up again and the shaggy vendor was already out of sight.
"He was weird." Staring at the dragon fruit in his hand, he muttered and shook his head.

Growl
Wang Ming was preparing to continue his journey to the dorm but just then his stomach growled again in hunger, and his craving for the fruit was pushed up again by a notch. His lifeless dull eyes stared at the fruit while he was making a decision and then with a nod, he started peeling the fruit.
'Even though we should not eat from strangers, but I am really hungry. At most I'll just die.'
After peeling, the white and juicy core of the fruit was revealed. Looking at the seducing pulp, he gulped down a mouthful of saliva.
'It looks tasty.' With a thought in mind, he engulfed the entire fruit in one go.
As soon as it entered his mouth, it dissolved. The soft and bouncy pulp transformed into smooth and silky viscous juice.
Feeling the joy of dissolving fruit in his mouth, he closed his eyes to emerge himself in this pool of joy.
Time passed by and after a few minutes, the fruit completely dissolved in his mouth and surprisingly, his hunger subsided with just that.
'Huh? Why do I feel so full?' He rubbed his hand over his belly and exhaled out in delight.
Felling full, he rushed back to his dorm.
…..
Creak
The door of the dorm room opened and Wang Ming with his expressionless face and a hanging left hand entered the room. The room was clean and tidy with proper bedding and non-smelly bedsheets. It wasn't like a boy dorm room at all. Who keeps their dorm so clean?
After entering, he scanned the dorm and when he found no one inside, he relaxed.
"Oh, it's time for Old Ye's class. Last week I was injured this time around and wasn't able to attend his class. Sigh… he'll definitely throw me out." Coming to realisation, he leapt on his bed in the corner of the room and lied down.

Even though he was discharged from the hospital, he was still feeling the pain and fatigue due to blood loss.
Fishing out his phone, he first sent a message to his department head, informing him about the accident and then sent another similar message to the HR manager of the company, he was currently doing his internship.
Keeping down his phone, the fatigue and overwhelming drowsiness took over him. The world around him darkened quickly and he was pulled into the dreamland.
....
Inside a classroom of Nan Hai University.
"Brother Feng, in eight months we will graduate out of University. If Fourth Brother Ming is still stuck with his thoughts like that, how will he survive in the world outside?" Zhang Wei lowered his head in order to escape the vision of old professor Ye and muttered softly.
This was the concern of all three of them. Even during class, they can't think of a way out of these thoughts.
Zhu Feng drew a contemplating face and his thoughts wandered off the class topic. Similar to Zhang Wei, he lowered his head and then spoke out, "It's true. Even if we can protect him from dark, yet there will be many things we can't help him with unless he openly speaks out."
"Yes, we need to make him talk out to us willingly." Zhang Wei interjected.
Zhu Feng shook his head, "It's not like we haven't tried that in the past two years. But, he always rejected us after speaking out a few words."
"..." Silence followed as the monotonous voice of old Ye was heard.
Was there really no solution?
Then, Will it always be like this?
Where to find the answer?
Several questions appeared in the mind of Zhu Feng and handsome Zhang Wei without any answer.
"What if we make him fall in love with another girl? Only another love can heal his wounds and return back his confidence." The silent Duan Fa who was sitting beside them suddenly spoke out.
Surprised by the idea, both Zhang Wei and Zhu Feng turned towards him and stared back at his serious face.
When did Duan Fa become this smart?
A question popped out in their mind.

Path of Righteousness
What do you desire? What are you afraid of? You run away from one, pursuing the other. Is that all you are? Conquer your fears. Dig to the bottom and confirm, what you really want... ...For you cannot escape suffering and death. You only have a little time. Use it wisely. Uru, a young boy with no talent for magic or fighting, sets out on a quest to become an avatar of order, the physical embodiment of righteousness, in a distant future, where control of origin energy allows people to defy physics and manipulate causality. Mocked by fate and broken by impossible dreams, all that's left is to stand in defiance to cruel existence. Because there is a Truth out there, somewhere. Singular, transcendent, eternal. What would you sacrifice for it? *** This is a fantastic sci-fi epic. It's going to blend both western and eastern traditional fantasy tropes – like might & magic and cultivation – with rational sci-fi grounded fully in reality, to produce a purely fictional fairy tale. I'd like to deliver something light-hearted and yet wholly serious. An uplifting adventure exploring the unfathomable reaches of humanity, free of indecency, with a healthy dose of humorous banter, legendary beings, and most importantly – lots of exciting, firework-filled mayhem! I've tried reading many web novels, but there's a fundamental problem with them – the eastern ones are annoyingly repetitive, superficial and morally destitute, while western ones are often dark, convoluted and profane. There's only so much one can do to filter out the bad and try to fill in the gaps with their own imagination. It's one thing to eat tasty fast food, but if it's moldy and filled with toxins, then it's not only poisonous, but also disgusting. The appreciation of beauty and higher values is disappearing at an alarming rate. Although there are throngs of talented people out there, none of them are creating what I want to witness – an inspiring battle against impossible odds, ending in absolute victory. A triumph of the spirit so overwhelming, it crushes the spectator into his seat and takes his breath away. I'm looking for a real paragon, so now I'd like to try conceiving one. *** The MC's name comes from Tolkien's Elven dictionary in Silmarillion, 'Uru' meaning 'Fire', and 'Dagnir an Uruloki' meaning 'Slayer of Dragons'. *** Note: I'm neither a native speaker, nor an aficionado of literature – I've never written anything before, and despite proficient English my literary prowess is abysmal. It therefore takes me a painful amount of effort to polish the chapters and bring them up to par. Last year I wrote and posted some on FictionPress, but I stopped since it wasn't going anywhere. The appalling amount of filth and mediocrity being peddled in all the media nowadays – a result of no conspiracy to manipulate the masses, but plain supply and demand – is no longer just the triumph of form over substance, but most worryingly corruption of the latter. Who wants to read about ideals anymore? And yet, masses flock together to gobble up perversion and depravity. That being said, I can't rule out pitiful exposure as the culprit to my failure, so I am now once again trying to increase it here, possibly for the last time. If there are still human beings present, hungry or in need of a detox after eating too much garbage, make yourselves heard, so I can see a reason to continue the story. Otherwise it's pointless – I'm not going to make fodder for the masses, and I'm most certainly not going to throw pearls before swine. I'll simply stop writing altogether.
