《Blue Road》Episode 4 (Part 4)

Richard and Fawn separated once more as the two traversed through the sewer waters. The stench in the area flowed through his nostrils as he pinched his nose and trudged through the murky waters with trash surrounding them. Outside of the light at the end of one tunnel, there was no other source of light as darkness surrounded the area.
A shiver went down Fawn’s spine, despite being a ghost at the scenery. “How do you know so much about this place so well?”
“I... don’t?” Richard hesitated, shaking his head. “Although I’ve been here in this town for years, I don’t know much about it.”
“Were you born here?”
“No, I’m not. At least, I don’t think so.”
“Well, what about raised?”
Just as Richard was about to answer that question, a thunk sound echoed from underneath him. He looked down and spotted a vent beneath his feet. He pulled the vent out and cast it aside as it led to another room in the system.
Richard leaped down, with Fawn following him as they found themselves in an empty subway station. Neither of them were certain why the sewerage was connected to the station, but at least they found their destination. Nobody else was there, and neither of them knew why. The two looked over; someone attached yellow tape to the staircase, along with a sign next to it.
Fawn guessed the place was out of commission, meaning the monorails wouldn’t be operational. Richard looked around. What would be the next step in their plan?
“Hey, do you hear something?” A voice echoed from above.
“I think it came from downstairs.” Another voice mentioned.
“Uh oh,” Fawn muttered. “What should we do now?” She darted around the place, trying to find somewhere to run and hide.

Richard backed up and looked around as well. He came to the outskirts and lower walls from across the room. Against his better judgement, he crawled down to the lower floor and walked along the monorail tracks. Fawn had no idea what his plan was, but followed him at a reasonable distance.
“Hey, can I ask why you chose to go this way?”
“To escape from those guys, of course,” Richard replied with half confidence and worry.
“But are you sure this is a good idea?”
“You said it yourself, the monorail isn’t working, so we’ll be fine.”
“Well, that was just an assumption. That doesn’t mean—”
While the two walked along the tracks, a horn blared out from far away. The two froze. Did they hear that right? The sound came closer and became louder. They turned, only to discover where it came from; the monorail sped through the tracks at blazing speed. Richard had hoped the monorail would stop near the abandoned station, but his hopes got dashed as it went right past the station and headed straight towards him.
Richard ran from the opposite direction as fast as he could, while Fawn followed behind, reminding him that his speed should be able to outrun it. He lost ground and focus as the monorail was catching up to him. He then tripped up and fell onto the tracks.
Richard turned and backed away, only to find himself stuck in between the tracks. He fell beneath the tracks, allowing himself to get underneath and have the monorail zoom past him with no trouble. His heart pounded fast as he popped out of the tracks as Fawn caught up to him.
“That was a close one,” Richard said, unsure if he needed to catch a breath.

“I’ll say,” Fawn added. “But if we need to get to our destination faster, we gotta catch that monorail.”
“But how?”
Fawn mentioned to him how he had the power of stretchy arms and super speed with the creature’s body. Richard wasted no time and used his speed to chase after the monorail. He used his arms to stretch and grab the edge of the vehicle, climbing himself up on the top. He removed the vent and tried to hold on. Fawn channeled her powers to lift him back into the monorail, making this process easier for him in the long run.
The monorail had nobody else present as Richard rested on the bench with his hands on his knees. Fawn looked around at the posters and signs displayed on the walls in the meantime. The two stayed silent as the monorail continued to ride at a brisk pace.
Eventually, Fawn broke the silence as she looked up at the rail post which said, ‘Now Arriving At Biostance.’
“We should be arriving shortly at our destination.”
Richard got up and peeked through the windows as the monorail got out of the dark tunnels. Soon, they appeared to be riding across the water and bridge as a large city with scoping lights greeted him in the distance.

Sexy Sect Babes
“One in a billion.” Jack kept repeating the mantra in his head. “One in a billion.” That was the number the Omni-Corps liked to cite whenever someone stepped onto one trans-mat pad and then simply… never stepped off the other. “Safer than a car,” he repeated as he slogged through the snow, his mining overalls doing at least a passable job of keeping out the cold as he brushed aside a tree branch. “Safer than a plane. Or a starship. Safest form of transport in the Star League.” He slammed his fist into a nearby tree, exo-empowered strength shattering it into little more than scattered bark and kindling. “Yeah, well I never heard of a car ride stranding some prick in another dimension!” He roared, his voice echoing through the seemingly endless forest around him. Then he kept marching. He’d seen the fire off in the distance. And given all the snow around, he sincerely doubted it was natural. Which left the unnatural. Which meant people. He hoped. Because even if the trans-mat had screwed up, he doubted it had dumped him too far off the central finite curve. The fact that the air was breathable and that he could recognize the trees around him as oak told him that much. And if the dimension he was in had trees native to Earth, chances are it would have animals too. Of which humans would hopefully be no exception. “Because I’ll be damned if I spend the rest of my days talking to goddamn squirrels.” No, if there were humans on this mudball, he was going to find them. One way or another.

BODY&SHADOW
AN ILLUSTRATED NOVEL • UPDATES TUESDAY AND FRIDAY In a time before living memory, the King Dragon of the Void watched the world and realized there was a crack. He realized that humanity was destroying the rock upon which they lived; they leaked life’s code into the churning chaos. At first the change was imperceptible: nanites overtook microorganisms, bacteria, viruses, amoebas. Insects became increasingly inorganic; birds and lizards followed soon after. Even humans were infected by their own advances, cell by cell, till there was not a person left on earth who wasn’t at least part synthetic, the product of a prior generation’s carelessness. The world’s population was ravaged by mechanical viruses with no vaccines; they were mercilessly overtaken by bacteria that knew no death. Soon, most of the planet was empty and only a handful remained who remembered the hedonist realm they came from; only a few were left who remembered what the world looked like when their buildings touched the sky. The King Dragon of the Void watched the rock turn. He watched humans cower as the Old World fell down around them; watched their great monuments crumble into dusty ruins; watched their codes become precious, ancient gem memories forged under the crushing pressure of so many fallen stones. The world has spun many times around the sun since chaos swallowed man whole. It is a simpler time than the one that died out, but the people now are not immune to the folly of the people before. There is old code everywhere: in the water, in the air, in the trees. The heart of man has been replaced by power cores, many of which are hard-coded with preternatural abilities—when they die, an esoteric mountain sect collects their cores and stores them in their hollow mountain home to preserve the sanctity and dignity of human death. They’ve learned to harness artifacts of the old world, gemstones full of codes their nanite infused bodies can parse as spells imbuing their users with great power; they inlay them into their bodies, into their skins, connected to their cores by copper conduit and gold tracers; they dress themselves in tattoos to advertise their prowess; they battle for relics in arenas, fight for them in the open world wherever they are found. The King Dragon of the Void watches the rock turn and wonders: when will this hunger finally make the rock stop spinning? WELCOME TO FANXING CITY … Twenty-five years ago, Fanxing City and the surrounding lands were commanded by the mad King Zao Beiguan. For many years, the King hoarded wealth, artifacts, food; he demanded tribute from a people already taxed to the edges of their existence and expected they be happy with their circumstances. Noncompliance was often punished harshly, bodies displayed proudly on Fanxing’s streets as a warning, from the city gates to the Zao palace’s golden doors. The youths of several prominent clans came together to overthrow the tyrant and made names for themselves as legendary heroes across the land: Tian, Ren, Feng, Gui, Ma, and Zhenxi. Even wanderers from the Luanshi sect descended from Yunji mountain to aid the rebellion. When the dust settled after three years, Tian Yunyong ascended the throne of Fanxing and swore to honour his slain father’s memory, and has maintained Fanxing’s peace with generosity and mercy where fear and cruelty once reigned.
