《Biogenes: The Series》Chapter 6

“Obfuscation is a rich field of magical study. One can change everything from their appearance to the memories others have of them. Of course, not all such magics are equal. Nearly all require contact or proximity to do their work. Without the proper permits, nearly all forms of obfuscation are illegal under US Code Title 6.”
~ Bek Trent, M.A.S.O
Night had fallen with preternatural speed, draping the world in a suffocating darkness. Now, at least, Bek knew the reason why…the shadow beast.
He sat at his desk, The Book of Lineage open to the page he had shown to Silver the day before. It had not returned to normal yet, if it ever would – the bottom of the page remained stained deep blue, the bleeding edges of the ink shimmering beneath his desk light with a faint silvery sheen. And her name - her family’s names - remained as they had been. Gone. It would have been impossible for him to explain to her why this had happened. It was nearly impossible for him to explain it to himself.
The Book of Lineage was a powerful magical relic. Not once had he known it to be wrong, and there was only one way he knew that it could be misled or damaged; by another spell. Which meant there was a spell on Silver Alurian. That he could not sense it at all meant the spell was remarkably well done. That it had driven the book to its current state made that still more obvious. Since Silver herself had clearly been confused by the change and disturbed by the magic unfolding before her eyes, it was likely she knew nothing about the spell. Most likely, it was meant to prevent people like him, and like the MASO, from discovering who she was.

So, who was she?
Yesterday, he would have determined to wait things out. In a few weeks, she would probably tip her hand. Others in her situation had, in the past. Of course, most of them had paid the big bucks for an obfuscation spell like hers, and were more than aware of it. The MASO agents just had to sit back and wait for their façade to slip.
He had tailed her today with just such an intention, in case she was simply a very good liar. Again, it had been remarkably easy, as so much of his investigation so far had been. He had taken all the regular precautions, even though he doubted she would even once look behind her on the northern mountain roads.
And then he had watched her car spin off the road, had seen the night coalesce above it, desperately seeking a way in. He hardly believed the evidence of his own eyes.
Who was she?
“That thing shouldn’t exist. How did it find her? Why?” he muttered aloud. Without knowing the reasons, he at least knew that things had just gotten very bad, very fast. If he did not handle this well, neither Silver nor her family would be alive much longer. But he could not give the order to bring her in without good reason, and he had no evidence of what he had seen. Memory reads like that he had undergone not long before were difficult, resource intensive, and carried out only by trained professionals on individuals trained in the art of seeking out and committing to memory the right details, at the right times; they worked in situations where the individual was forewarned that observation was needed, not in the harried moments before a potentially fatal accident. Anything anyone could pull from his mind now would by noisy at best, remarkably error prone at worst. There was only one path open to him that he could see.

This weekend, he would take the book to the MASO for analysis. There might be some traces of the spell that had affected it, and they would be enough to force the MASO to move. Silver had miraculously survived her encounter with the beast that had tried to kill her, and he could only hope that if it came down to it, she could survive one more.

Project: You have died
A monologue story about a man who died and was reborn in a new world of mysteries and intrigue. Where monsters and magic are common place and gods are plentiful. The story follows his life as fate conspires to bind him to a path which he will eventually struggle to come to terms with. *** The story is a slow burner inspired by web novels with the main character accounting every action in time. I doubt this style is for everyone ***

Hello ladies and gentlemen! Welcome to my first attempt at writing a novel. I am preparing to participate in the 2017 NaNoWriMo event so enjoy the first chapter as that's here early only to ensure that I have a place to post once the event starts. This means the first novel/book will have a target of 50,000 words. I'm excited to attempt this challenge despite the hurdles I will have to overcome. I do have a demanding full time job so planning time to write and make weekly releases starting in November will be my biggest challenge. Also, please accept my apologies on my cover. I'm not an artist and the only digital tool available at my disposal is the stock microsoft paint. So I did my best to create a decent cover as I did not want to steal the work of another. If there are those interested by the end of November in donating a new fan made cover then I will look into replacing the old cover.

After the End: Serenity
We all want to believe we are heroes of our own story - unless we want to be the villain, of course. At the end of everything, the Final Reaper decided he hadn’t been a hero. Driven by a desire to right the wrongs he was subjected to, he killed everyone who wronged him or his people - which turned out to be everyone that wasn’t killed by someone else first. He'd won - but it was a hollow victory. Eventually, Order’s Voice found a way out. If the only existing being would agree to give up most of his power, the Voice could reset the multiverse to an earlier time with a few minor changes. Of course, the Voice couldn't ask it that way. It could only ask if the Final Reaper was willing to start over from when Earth was first brought into Order. It was an easy decision, and yet it wasn’t. Was he willing to go through eons of pain again to not be alone? Yes. In a heartbeat. Not that his heart beat anymore. Now it would. Perhaps he could even be a hero, this time. When he landed in his old body - more or less - on Earth, the Final Reaper once again became Thomas. He was both and neither. He needed a new name for a new life. Serenity. ------------------------------------------ While this is technically a System Apocalypse story, it's a System Apocalypse that is designed to have a large percentage of the population survive and prosper. There are a lot of problems that come with the appearance of the Voice, and it's entirely possible to lose. Earth has some special opportunities, but also special challenges. The first time around, Earth won the first round and lost the second. Serenity has ten years from when the Voice arrives to prevent that from happening. It will be a group effort; Serenity can't win alone - which is difficult for someone who's been alone for as long as he has. Of course, that's only his second priority. ------------------------------------------- Updates Daily A note on the nonhuman lead tag: He isn't human, and hasn't been human for a very, very long time (or maybe not long at all, depending on how you count it). He still thinks of himself as human, either way. The content warnings are mostly to give me room to write; this fiction is not intended to be edgy, but once in a while a character will swear or someone will get seriously injured. The cover image is a Chandra/Hubble composite image of VV 340 / Arp 302 / UGC 9618. While we're not going to space itself any time soon in the story, people from elsewhere are coming to Earth and Serenity will visit other planets. Plus, I like space imagery.
