《Necro-Merchant》Chapter Five - Granny

"Who is it?"

I quickly turned around. It was an elderly lady around maybe seventy, standing right behind me.

I patted my chest forcefully, "Granny, how do you walk so silently?"

Granny's face was still full of that strange and gloomy smile, "Boy, coming to a funeral home this late, are you not afraid of ghosts?"

I quickly explained, "You are granny, right? My cousin Zhang Long asked me to come to pick some things up."

"Ah, yes, I am granny."

Ask we spoke, granny walked forward and opened up the cabinet.

A pungent smell burst out as the cabinet door was opened up. It was the smell of formalin, as I find made it out what was soaked in those jars: those are organs.

There are hearts, lungs, stomach, kidneys, and in a smaller jar, two eyes floated within.

I couldn't have but shiver. Those organ specimens, don't tell me those are human's…

Granny took out a small bottle from the cabinet. It was sealed with a wooden stopper, and it was filled with a yellow translucent liquid.

"Take it."

When I got a hold of the bottle, I accidentally touched Granny's hand, it was icy cold.

"I … I don't have to pay?"

Before I came here, my cousin didn't tell me.

The granny smiled, "No, you cousin will pay it."

"Boy, since you came here, why not stay and talk to me some more."

Seeing granny living by herself alone, I couldn't really refuse.

"Granny, do you live here alone, where is your family?"

"Ah, I don't have family members … I just do some cleaning, watch the yard, eat. I am getting old, don't want to bother others to move things around."

Granny's words sounded so sad.

Granny asked me where I was from, what my family was doing, and why I come to my cousin. I answered one by one. Granny was very kind and very pleasant to talk to.

As I was talking, my wrist shook slightly, it was the watch my cousin gave me.

I looked down, the pointer had stopped at 11:55.

I remembered what my cousin told me: never stay past zero at granny's.

I quickly told granny that I had to leave. Granny said yes, and said her feet weren't well, so she won't bring me to the door.

When I turned around to say goodbye to granny, I can saw her expression, she was sad to see me leave.

As I walked up to the main gate of the funeral home, next to the smaller door of the security booth, there was a big dog, all dirty, probably a stray dog.

It heard my footsteps, turned around and stared at me, as it walked forward two steps and blocked the door.

The dog's eyes were unusually green under the moon, looked pretty permeable.

There was only this one little door leaving the funeral home. If this dog doesn't move, I can't get out.

Just when I did not know what to do, the watch on my wrist vibrated again. I looked down, it was 11:59.

One minute until midnight.

My cousin won't let me stay at the funeral home until midnight, there must be a reason for it. I gritted my teeth, picked up a rock from the ground, and aimed it directly at the dog.

"Get the f*ck away!"

The rock hit directly on the dog. It whimpered and ran away.

I hurried out the door and looked at the watch, it was twelve on the mark.

Back at the tea house, my cousin asked me if I got the thing. I gave him the bottle granny gave me.

"Cousin, what is in this bottle? It looks like oil."

"It is oil."

After saying that, my cousin went to the kitchen. I was pretty tired and fell asleep on the table.

My cousin woke me up. I looked at my watch, it was two in the morning.

My cousin handed me a paper bag: "You send it to Hong, and then take a taxi home."

He took out his wallet and drew out three hundred and fifty yuan and handed it to me.

"Three hundred is today's remuneration, fifty is the taxi fare, and the salary would be paid to you by the end of the month."

As soon as I saw the money, I became excited. Today's work was worth it, just going out twice and made three hundred yuan.

I calculated it in my head; if I make this much every day, plus the basic salary, I could make more than ten grand a month.

With this much money, my father's medical fee was covered.

My cousin gave me Hong's address. It was kind of far away, I had to take the taxi there.

On the way, I opened up the paper bag out of curiosity. It was a bunch of loose cigars but was different from the normal ones, these ones didn't have a filter.

In addition to that, the bag also exuded a very nice and strange … fragrance.

This scent was very unique. If it were to be compared to something, it was similar to the smell of grilled meat when eating a barbecue.

I just sniffed it slightly, and my mouth was drooling.

Even the taxi driver asked me, "kid, where did you get that, it smells so nice!"

I didn't know what to answer, so I just smiled and say I was hungry.

I re-sealed the paper bag and opened the window to let the scent out. I leaned on the seat and squinted, trying to some sleep, but the smell just kept lingering in my mind and refused to go away.
