《Surviving the Dead》Chapter 26: Brace Yourself

His hesitant eyes locked with his sisters' as he awaited an explanation that never came. "Well, are you gonna continue?" His words were low and irritated.
Winter flashed her twin a look of dread before shifting her attention back to Forest. "Holly's first vision was of finding a young man on the roadside. At the time, she was living with Skylar, Jade, and the three that... were killed by those cougars. It was just them. Long story short, it came true, Forest."
The boy gave a humorless chuckle. "Then who was this young man?" When she only stared, waiting for it to click, he let out a sudden gasp. "It was him, wasn't it?"
"Yes." Autumn nodded, her face solemn. "It was our uncle."
"Even if what you're saying is true, why would I believe it? How do I know it's not another coincidence like what happened today? You know, it's weird that the puppies came on the same day that you two did, right?" He looked at Winter. "Am I right?"
"No, you're not understanding," Autumn said, shaking her head. "When Holly saw Jett, he looked exactly like how he did in the dream. Not only that, but he was found on the roadside. And he was alone" -she let out a breath- "just like in the dream."
Forest averted his gaze, defeated. After a few moments, the boy found his feet, took a few steps, and paused. "You know, I had a vision myself."
"What?" Winter questioned. "What do you mean?"
"You remember those nightmares I was having?" He pinched the bridge of his nose. "I think they were a warning."
"Forest... what did you see?" Autumn's voice was slow and reluctant.
"They went on for weeks, and yet, I... I didn't take them seriously. I didn't realize that I should have been paying attention." The boy still couldn't bare to look at them; he just couldn't. "I should have, and I'm so, so sorry."

"Forest, tell us what you saw." Autumn's voice was no longer worried but angry. "Tell us now."
After a soft sigh, he gathered himself and turned around, fully expecting more backlash. "I'd always dream of this girl, every night, and she'd always tell me to that I should run while I still can and that there was danger. Something was coming, and I-I think it was about the mob of walkers."
"Forest," Winter said, her face hurt. It was only when a tear fell from his face that she softened. "It's not okay and it never will be, but we'll get through this, one day at a time."
The boy wiped at his eye and gave a tight nod. "I tell myself that every day."
"What bothers me is that I asked you for weeks what your nightmares were about, and you'd always shrug it off," Autumn said, holding her head in her hands. "If only you'd have told me, then maybe Dad wouldn't have died."
"I know, and I'm really sorry." He hugged himself, his gaze drifting onto the puppies. Huddled next to one another, they were sound asleep on the living room floor. Instead of smiling, however, the boy set his jaw. "What about Holly's other vision? The one that hasn't come true yet?"
"Forest, it's come to pass many days ago. Weeks, even." Winter suddenly stood to her full-height.
"Tell me, what was it?" the boy asked, his eyes locking with hers. "Stop telling me to brace myself and just say it!"
"Unlike you, she only had this dream once. She was standing on the porch of the farmhouse and, for some reason, Holly felt that there was something bad about to happen." Winter paused, shifting on her feet. "It had to have been early morning, she told me, and the weather was just perfect."

"Okay, so what?" Forest interrupted, impatient.
"A man suddenly appeared from the woodlands," Autumn said, earning his attention. "He just looked evil. That's what she told us. Slowly, he came forward as he gave her a wide smile. When he was just in front of the house, he told her something."
The boy uneasily crossed his arms, his mind spinning. "What did he say, Bambi?"
"He told her to stay out of the woods. This was the night before the search. The man said that all is not what it seems and to trust her gut," Winter said. "I know it sounds cheesy, but that very morning we all searched for Ryan, Kimberly, and Lane. And, well, you know what happened."
Forest looked at Autumn and released a breath. "You and Holly went missing, we found those three... dead, and I had a seizure. Later that same day, Winter and I snuck out to search for you guys and she" -he resisted the urge to look at Winter- "lost an arm before going missing... just like you."
"You didn't have to recap, but yeah, that's what happened," Winter said, her voice bitter.
"We only told you half of the dream."
Forest looked at Autumn and was trapped in her critical gaze. "Then w-what's the rest of it?"
"Remember how I told you the weather was just perfect?" Winter asked. "Well, dark clouds soon took over the sky and a powerful storm had begun in a matter of seconds. Just before Holly woke up, the man, still smiling, told her that people can die just like that. And snapped."
"One moment, everything's just great; the next, all is in ruins," Autumn added, a grim look on her face.
Forest's eyes flickered between the twins, his vision dizzy. This was all too much. Stepping over to the stool beside Autumn, he sat down and closed his eyes.
"Are you okay?" Winter asked from behind him. Her voice was small and delicate.
The boy didn't care to answer and instead focused on catching his breath. A few moments went by before Autumn placed a reassuring hand over his shoulder. And he sighed.
"Forest?" Winter asked, coming closer. She stopped right beside her brother. "We found Holly."
