《Grand Defender》Chapter 10

Another week had quickly passed. I repeated the same things I had done the previous week, and leveled up just enough to get a new Skill for every Class that I had.

[Mineral Examination] came from [Geologist], it basically allowed me to know whatever I could have previously known about rocks, but better.
[Further Reinforcement] came from [Mason], it made it so that the stuff I made was stronger, without the need of extra materials.
[Mineral Explosion] came from [Geomancer], I could now make small rocks and stones explode whenever I want them to. It isn't all that strong, but the stone shards are lethal.
[Weightless Spear] came from [Spearman], duh, it made it so that I couldn't feel the weight of my spear much, so it's easier to swing it around.
And finally, [Night Vision] came from [Hunter], the name tells you what it can do.
Who am I explaining this to? Am I that bored?
Yes, I was that bored, enough so that I wanted to meditate to at least do something. I sat on the boulder, closed my eyes, and took a deep breath. With my back straight, I remained as still as possible, and tried to filter out the ambient noises. After a while, I could hear nothing but my own thoughts, which weren't that interesting either. I felt the heat of the sun on my skin, and a strong gust blow into my face. I 'woke up' from my state, and noticed a transparent screen in front of me.

The Defenders are ready
Huh, is this the power of meditation?
Defenders must come together to prevail
[Mini-map] has been allocated
Suddenly, a small and round topographical map appeared in the top-right corner of my vision. It was almost completely blank, except for the places that I had already been in and the lines that represented different heights. There were seven black dots sprayed across the map, me being one of them.
Failure to complete this task might result in death
Remaining time: 1 Month
Oh crap, death? I mean, I have been trying not to die all of this time, but this feels different somehow.
The fact that there were other 'Defenders' indicated that there were people in a similar situation to mine, and I had to go search for them. The closest dot to me was directly east, but we were separated by a massive mountain range as indicated by the map. The second closest one was directly north, with no clear obstacles in the way. One dot was even further east, another one northeast, another northwest, and the last one southeast. That last one was really unlucky, as the mountain range extended diagonally all the way to the end of the map, me being the closest one to them.
This led me to a dilemma: Should I go to the closest dot from myself? Or should I go southeast, to the person who has no way to get to anyone except me?
The answer was pretty obvious.

Shura Saga: Burn and Slay - Cultivation, Lightning Bolts, Monsters galore
“If it lives, we can slay it. And then burn it, just to make sure it doesn’t come back from the dead,” she said. “...does that happen often?” he asked. “Slaying? Yeah, duh? It’s what we're here to do in the first place, dummy.” “I meant the coming back from the dead part.” “Eh. More often than you’d like.” “Great. Just great.” Walking away from a life drenched in senseless bloodshed, Raksha embarks on the Warrior’s Pilgrimage. In doing so, he strives to hone his mind, spirit, and martial skills, and he swears to abide by the Ancient Code’s tenets of honor and compassion. He definitely did not expect to run into Sadea, a powerful sorceress who loves silk, jewels, and killing things for fun and profit. Neither did he expect to be stuck with her as they fight murderous mutants, vicious monsters, and demons. She calls their entanglement a beautiful partnership, but it’s the last thing he needs. Or so he thinks.

MAZE - The Endless Quest
As all kids do, Hera wanted to be an explorer. Sadly when she turned 18, she discovered that her stats and lack of skills made her fail the requirements to become one, and she went to work on a bookstore. That should have been the end of her story. But when she wins a lottery to have her level up, she discovers a hidden skill and a rare one at that. The system gave her dream back, and this time she is not letting it go. ############################## The story is about a world where game-like systems are the norm. Everyone has a level, status, and even skills are a common thing. If your stats are good, you can also become an explorer, someone that ventures inside a place called MAZE, a dungeon of sorts filled with monsters, creatures, and things that the natural world is missing, such as magic and demi-humans. The story follows Hera, a woman who wanted to be an explorer, but her status were too low to become one. One day she wins a raffle that allows her to level up for the first time giving her the chance to achieve her childhood dream. It's more about how things work and what you can do with them than about power or revenge. The rhythm might be a bit slow for some, but that is the idea. I want to give sort of a slice of life feeling to most of it.

Leave Bad Enough Alone
Something has been amiss in the city’s theaters as of late. The local bards have long done a respectable job of keeping the audiences entertained, weaving high concepts with skillful performances. But lately, a new set of bards, and their illusionist cohorts, have captured the crowd’s attention. Compared to the theater’s usual fare, their work is hackneyed and poorly plotted, with unskilled acting, bad special effects, and unsatisfying resolutions. Worst of all, the audiences like their work more, and these upstarts are far more profitable than the city’s decent bards! Clearly, there must be some dark secret behind the success of these newcomers, and it’s up to the city’s true artists to find out what it is and expose the conspiracy! Or maybe the city’s bards have just become too hopelessly pretentious and derivative. It’s hard to tell. But investigate it they must! Failure is not an option! Victory, or...well, they’ll have to get day jobs or something. Original cover image generated by NightCafé.Master story list here.

The Core of a Factory
An abandoned steampunk arms factory, in the middle of a conflict torn former state of the Empire it served, gains a soul. This transforms it into a Lord, capable of turning land into power. Beset by enemies on all sides it must figure out how to win the war its creators lost a century ago. This is a progressive Dungeon Core novel (which is to say the core will progress and expand in scale, eventually) across multiple dimensions with different characteristics (e.g. steampunk, magic, mythological). It has rationalist leanings (paragraphs of reasoning) and litrpg leanings (there are stat blocks). The core game mechanical idea is something like "what if different flavors of magic power actually did come from controlling land" and then the story is: "what if there was a flavorless (artifact deck) dungeon core". Chapters will be relatively short (my aim is that in three column format each would fit on a wide screen monitor), the first few chapters - setting up the main character and mechanics - are currently the longest in the entire series. I write chapters in blocks, and then release them one a weekday (M-F; 6 PM GMT, unless RoyalRoad's publish thing screws up) until I run out. There may be a few days of gaps here and there if someone finds an egregious error I have to re-write around or if I am behind. In general though one can read this once a weekend. I may do slight retconns and edits, I'll make sure to put it in an authors note if I do.
