《The Software Detective》27. Drinking like a Sailor

Just great, I lost the map. My only resource to navigate this building is gone. My phone died while I was on the job so I can't call for backup. Guess I'm going to just sleep on the floor. I wish I wore a watch because I don't even know what time of day it is. Wait what if no one finds me for days? I would probably die of dehydration first. Now I really had to find my way to a charger or a map of the building. I heard when you die everything in your lower bowels gets released. I can't let Bennet find me like that, he works so hard to make sure this house looks immaculate.
I picked up the pace as I walked through hall after hall. I have to send my regards to the interior decorator because different paintings lined the walls, so I had at least some sense of direction while navigating the hallways. At the end of the hallway was a dog riding a tricycle that split into two hallways. For a moment I stood in front of the dog. Maybe I should listen to see if I can hear anyone talking, or maybe the sound of a TV. As I stood there at first all I could hear was silence. But then down the hallway on the right I could hear music. Without hesitation I ran towards the sound of my savior.
The music played louder and louder as I approached the room. The door was open I walked in the door frame. Rue was behind the bar with two ice chest and mixing a drink in a gray tin. She was the first to catch my eye. "Oh, hey there Tom! You ready to party?"
Ania sitting at the bar turned around looked and looked at me. Her glasses were drooped lower down on her nose and her cheeks were flushed. "Come on computer boy take a seat and enjoy yourself." Ania said patting the stool next to her.
Zofia was in the middle of the room dancing and twirling in the middle of the room to classical music. "Their right Tom, you need work life balance!" Zofia sang, or at least what I could make out from her slurred singing voice.
I was hoping to find Bennet, but beggars can't be choosers. Walking over to the bar I sat next to Ania. Rue put the tin down. She grabbed Ania's cup and added ice into the cup from one bucket. Rue then poured the contents of the tin into the glass. The pink contents poured over the ice and then Rue put a cherry on the rim. "A pink lady for one lovely lady." She said handing the drink to Ania. "Now what can I get'cha partner." Looking over to me.

"I will just have water. Wait, you said that's a pink lady? I've never seen it made with ice before." I said pointing to the drink.
"Yeah that's just Ania, she can't drink anything without ice." Rue said adding ice from the other bucket into the cup. She ducked down, then when she came back up she poured water into the ice filled cup.
"Its just weird looking at the flat surface of a drink. It's almost as if it's a portal to another dimension." Ania said staring into her drink.
I grabbed the water Rue handed me "That's... uh... pretty deep." I said taking a sip from the glass of water.
"You know what else is deep, how deeply in love Rue was with the mystery man." Zofia said plopping down in a chair breathing heavily.
"Shut up Zofia." Rue said throwing an ice cube at Zofia. It hit her right in the stomach, which caused her to go into a laughing fit.
"Ah, I also found the love of my life but for various reasons we can't be together." I said moving my finger around the rim of my cup.
"Aww, Tom tell us all about them" Rue said, putting her elbows on the counter and her chin in her hands.
"It's swirl was magnificent, they wound together into the center and oozed sticky perfection. It was nice and round in all the right places. Spread across its top was a gooey delicious peanut butter spread, that dripped along its side. Then when it was paired next to silky smooth vanilla bean, it made for the ultimate midnight snack." I said then took another sip. When I looked up, I saw Zofia sleeping in the chair, while Ania and Rue were staring at me with eyebrows raised.
Ania was the first to break the silence as she giggled. "You must really love cinnamon buns."
"Their god's gift to humanity." I said finishing the glass of water. I handed the cup back to Rue, and she filled it again with more water.
"Alas, I wish I could say the same about my lover. We met at my mom's funeral." Rue said taking a shot of a dark liquid. "I was standing towards the back taking of the service. As everyone was giving their speeches about mom, I was taking a swig from the flask I snuck in. I was quite depressed, I mean I wasn't ready to see my mom go so soon. I know you're supposed to outlive your parents, but I couldn't imagine them leaving so soon." Rue wiped a tear out of her eye.

After taking a drink of water Rue continued her story. "I stepped outside for a quick smoke, you know to distract myself a bit. That's when I met him. He was standing there with a cigarette in his mouth standing underneath an umbrella to keep himself dry in the rain. I asked him for a light, which he gave me, but he also lets me stand next to him under the umbrella. As I stood their he smelled of oak and musk. It was intoxicating." Rue put on elbow on the table and her hand on her chin and stared at the ceiling. "He was honestly so amazing and as he talked the more and more I wanted to know about him. Eventually the church let out and Zofia pulled me aside to ask if I could drive her to the repast. I told her to give me a moment. But when I turned around the amazing guy disappeared." Rue said taking another shot.
"I still can't believe it never occurred to you to get his name." Ania said wiping the condensation off her cup with a finger.
"I know big sister, maybe it was an angel that came down to help me in my time of need." Rue said staring longingly in the distance.
"Okay, I think its time for me to go to bed. It feels like your going to talk my ear off again about this mystery guy. And I don't feel like listening to it tonight." Ania said. She stumbled out of her seat looking as if the very attempt to stand up straight made her dizzy. Drool fell at the corner of her mouth. Her cheeks turning redder she wiped the drool from her mouth. "Ooops I'm sorry."
I stood up and offered to holder her up. "Maybe I should take you to your room." I said.
"Your such a gentleman Tom, the guest room is in the same hallway so you I'll take you to where you will be sleeping." Ania said grabbing her glass and staring to walk towards the entrance. We said goodbye to Rue and a sleeping Zofia and went back into the maze.
It amazed me that Ania could navigate the hallways so effortlessly, on top of being stumbling drunk. As we continued to walk Ania continued to drool from her mouth and her slurred speech worsened. If her arm wasn't around my shoulder, I'm sure she would have collapsed on the floor by now.
"Here he are," Ania said it's going to be down this hallway. I noticed at the end of the hallway was a door with a dog on the tricycle. If only I knew I was so close to salvation. "My room is right here, and your door is two doors down." She said taking her arm off my shoulder wiping the drool from her face.
"Thanks, I would have never found this on my own." I said.
"I could say the same to you. I think I had a little too much to drink tonight." Ania said giggling.
After saying good night, I walked over to the guest room. "Hey Tom," Ania called after me. I turned around to see her standing at her door frame "You know if you don't enjoy sleeping in your bed alone, I have some extra room in my bed."
"Uh... yeah sure I'll think about it." I said before going in my room and closing the door. I think I am going to skip on the offer and listen to the wise Bennet, to leave these chicks alone.

Journey West 5000
With her parents murdered and her brother abducted, a trainee Monk of the Gun pursues the one responsible, the Bull Demon King, undefeated Warlord of the Crimson Army.Struggling to track down her enemy while braving the dangers of the wilds, she enlists the help of Sun Wukong, but 500 years under a mountain have taken its toll. Unstable and weakened, will he be more hindrance than help? Can he become the warrior he once was?A Monk and a Monkey journey across a world...... where the remnants of technology are seen as magic, while pockets of humanity strive to drag themselves out of ignorance.... where the descendants of animal-human hybrids, once created as instruments of war, now seek to dominate the world as demons.... where beings who call themselves Immortals and Gods preoccupy themselves with selfish pastimes, ignoring everything else. Among other things, a story about growth, grit, and being better than the person you were yesterday. Here's my rambling on why I'm writing Journey West 5000. Journey West 5000 is my crazy ambitious writing project to adapt a classic epic called "Journey to the West" for a global, modern audience. It's a sci-fi story disguised as fantasy, and has some road trip + monster of the week elements (as does the original Journey to the West). No system, definitely no harem, gradual power progression. Hmm, what else can I put here so potential readers know what to expect? My writing style for now is mostly "show don't tell", because I believe that readers don't need to have everything pointed out to them, and that they should be allowed to make up their own minds about characters based on the actions of those characters. I'm also trying to be less long-winded (a weakness pointed out by some friends) in order to write according to something Neil Gaiman said, which is to write as though I'm the one who has to pay for every word, not the reader. This will bring down my chapter word counts, and might drive away potential readers, but I believe there's value in learning to compress and be concise. All chapters posted here will have been edited. Constructive criticism, comments, and feedback would be very much welcome and appreciated. Please, please help point out any typos or grammatical mistakes, I'm striving to minimize those as much as possible. Above all, I hope you enjoy my story.

Unwitting Champion
"In stories this is always easy. There's magic and powers, and quick steps to claiming that power for one's self. This doesn't feel true for me. I'm supposed to be a Champion, whatever that means, and yet I don't feel important. I don't have all the bells and whistles, which honestly feels familiar even in a new world. But what was I expecting? I haven't had the worst life - there are people with worse problems than mine - I've known what it is to struggle, to be pulled down instead of being helped up.This is nothing new."When in great peril, the Kingdom of Althor has no choice but to send a call into the void, beseeching the Fates to bring them a man who would save them from the coming darkness. Unfortunately the path the Fates chart is often unknowable to men and the Champion who appears is not what the kingdom expected.Unwitting Champion is a story of a guy displaced, dealing first and foremost with trying to survive in a world where he is no longer a person but a tool, and - at least from the reaction of those around him - a shoddy one at that. His major goal is to survive long enough that either he can run or find a way home, because as exciting as the possibility of learning magic might be, he would rather have a boring life than a short life.
