《The Software Detective》14. Gotta go fast

"Hey man, where are we off to? Oh, by the way, those are some cool llama pj's," the cab driver said, as he merged back onto the street.
"They're actually alpacas, and I don't know. Can you just keep driving forward?" Turning around, I saw the men piling into a car, then started driving towards us.
"Hey man, I can just keep driving forward. I need a place to take you." The cab driver said.
"Uh, okay, take me to the...." I was cut off by the bullet piercing through the back window.
"Whoa, what was that! " The driver said. I ducked down, and more bullets poured into the back window. "Listen, man, if you got business with the mob, that's your problem. But I have a family, so you need to get out of my car." The driver pulled over in front of an alley. Great, I have to lose them on foot now. When I got out of the car, I ran down the alley.
With a hailstorm of bullets chasing me, destroying everything around me. I turned the corner of the alleyway and ran around the dumpster and took a seat. I had to think fast those goons could have followed me. Looking in front of me, I saw a cat drinking from a bowl of milk. Hearing voices coming down the alleyway, quickly I got up and made a mad dash for the door. I must have frightened the cat because it made a noise and leaped away. Opening the door, I went inside and shut the door behind me. The shop was dark and quiet, which was strange for a bakery at this hour. The likely hood of me tripping an alarm was very low because the back door was open but I was only buying so much time, it was only a matter of time before they find me. Looking around the shop, I looked for a place to hide, so I can find a place to collect my thoughts and bid a little more time. Near the big table in the room, there was a closet. Walking in, I sat on the floor and caught my breath.

Sitting down next to a large bag of flour, I took a deep breath. Shit, how did this happen? All I wanted to do was have a nice night and relax in my new apartment. After searching all over the city, I finally found the divine pastry, but that plan went to hell.
Suddenly, I heard the back door open. The person walked in and turned on the light. It shone at the bottom of the door, revealing their shadow. Darn, I thought I would have had a lot more time; these guys were relentless. But everything would be fine if I just stayed quiet.
Then my phone chimed. In the middle of the chase, I didn't silence my phone. I was completely fucked. Reaching into my pocket, it was Syd again. "Hey are you okay? Call me as soon as you can." she texted. I didn't have time to answer her, so I turned off my phone.
I could hear the footsteps move closer to the door. The person knew where I was at, and the possibility of me getting out of here with a friendly chat was very low. My only option was to fight. I looked around frantically for anything that could be a weapon. There was only a rolling pin; beggars can't be choosers, I guess. I grabbed the kitchen tool and readied myself for a fight.
I could see their shadow completely over took the door, the knob turned, and the door opened.

The American Dream: An Alternate, Time-Travel Timeline
Due to a mysterious transcendent being, United States Marine Corps First Lieutenant Samuel Kim from the year 2016 is thrown back in time to the year 1775. To make matters worse, he wakes up near Bunker Hill, mere hours before the famed Battle of Bunker Hill is set to begin. Realizing the unique situation he finds himself in, the lieutenant takes the opportunity to change the fate of the battle and ensure an overwhelming American victory. Guided by his "patronizing" "God" and the American revolutionaries, Lieutenant Kim embarks on a journey to help America gain its independence and to ensure the nation uphold its "most promising" ideals from the very beginning. Author's Warning: The story is very rough in the first few chapters (and as some readers pointed out, some parts are laughable, such as "American idealism"). However, the pace and quality of the story improves from chapter four and onwards. You will enjoy the story if you have some interest in history, worldbuilding, and the butterfly effect (along with a few badass characters). So even if you are a bit turned off in the beginning, I promise that the story improves quickly.
