《Another Death》Chapter 14 - Second year

"Ah, second year of school, i can't wait for the magic practice" thought Andrej while putting his uniform on and together with his hero roommate Mateja, made it on time for the first time in his life, he happily took his seat and wiped his eyes to be completely ready for class, then he woke up, for real this time.
After realizing his roommate was nowhere to be seen, the realization hit him like a rock.
"Shit"
Quickly shuffling through his uniform and getting ready, he went to put the shoes on, but then he realised that the shoes were full of water, and his feet were all wet and cold now, then suddenly frogs started appearing out of the shoes, scaring Andrej half to death, before the illusion was dispelled, revealing a laughing Ivan behind the room door.
"Got you good my friend?"
"Ivan!" Andrej yelled so loud that the entire hallway could hear him.
"Hello"
"Now i am late because of you!"
"But you are always late"
"Shut up"
"Now, now, do you want to miss your class the first thing in the morning?"
Andrej just angrily left the dorm and arrived to class, quietly knocked on the door, and when he was allowed to enter, he quietly apologised for being late.
"I'm sorry for being late mister"
"We are all already accustomed to your lateness, but please, try to arrive on time at least once" said the instructor of magic and swordplay, professor Jelisej Svetiforev.
"Now that we are all here, i just wanted to announce that the magical practice classes are starting tomorrow"
"Really!?" Andrej said with a spark in his eyes.
"Yes, erm you don't have to be that excited"
"Haha, that will be the perfect time for the hero to show his unlimited might"
"Will you shut up at least once with that hero stuff" Said Anya and slapped Mateja.
"Now, now this class is dismissed" the professor said and quietly left the classroom.
"Really Andrej, try not to be late once!"
"I will try"
"I am sorry my partner! I am sorry for not waking you up, i will not make the same mistake again"
"Stop dramatizing everything"
At that moment professor Irina stood at the classroom door.
"Let the wind blow you away" Said Ivan and with a small wind blast knocked her hat off her head and he quickly blasted away.
"Ivan!" Shouted Irina angrily.
"My bad!" could be heard from the floor under.
"Don't mind that little….joke, anyways today we are beginning with actual magic history, but first, i must record each of your magical attributes, so firstly we will be doing that"
"Wait, wasn't our attribute written in the application letters?"
"Now i know what you are thinking, formally you are not supposed to use the Crystallization method until you are in the second year of magecraft studies, but most of you did that anyways, the law cannot punish you for that. Anyways, since your attributes are not formally recorded yet, it is a must to do the Crystallization during the second year, and i have the duty of recording the attributes of your class, now we will be going in order, and each of you will be Crystallizing, got it?"
"Yes madam!"
One by one, allt the students had Crystallized their magic, and their attribute was clearly shown, then it was Andrej's turn, he stood in front of professor Irina, and began with the process.
"Crystallize"
Immediately, a ball of pure mana formed around his hands and crystallized, before filling itself with dark energy and becoming a pure black sphere, before Andrej made it disappear, only the shocked face of the professor remained.
"A born dark magic user, and such perfect mana control, what is this kid?"
"What is your name again?"
"It's Andrej miss"
"Andrej, see me at the library after you have finished with all your classes" Irina whispered to him, so nobody could hear.
"Okay miss" Andrej said and scaredly made his way back to his seat.
"Now that we are finished, let me submit this to the higher ups quick and then we can start with the lesson" said Irina and walked out of the classroom, before the bell rang out and signalled the end of the class.
"Nevermind what i said, you are free to go"
The day went smoothly, and them the last class ended, and Andrej, Anya and Mateja were supposed to go and hang out with Katarina and Ivan now.
"Let's go to the yard!" said Anya.
"Ah, go on without me, i need to finish something quickly, don't worry i will catch up with you" said Andrej and quickly ran in the opposite way of the stairs, towards the library, where he saw professor Irina waiting for him.
"As promised, i am here miss" Andrej said.
"Good, now come inside" she replied and they both entered the vast library, quickly finding the nearest table they sat opposite of each other, not long after they sat down Irina started talking.
"So, let's make this quick, we both have somewhere we need to be i reckon"
"Yes"
"Now, the reason i called you here is because of your magic"
"What about it?"
"Being born with dark magic attribute is rare, i'd say about once in every 20 years a person like you is born"
"I knew it was rare, but wow, now i feel even more special"
"The dark attribute is also very strong, but also very dangerous if used by the wrong person"
"But can't everybody learn magic, apart from light attributed"
"Yes, but they cannot fully master it, and being like that doesn't present a problem, but people like you who can master dark magic fully can use some dangerous arts. The last known person born with dark magic, Henry Blavatski, was a master of many dark arts, including every forbidden technique, but he disappeared one day without a trace"
"Sounds creepy"
"We hope that he is dead, but if he is alive, we hope that at least he is not the enemy of the kingdom, his knowledge of forbidden arts could kill almost all of the royal knights and current adventurers"
"He is that strong?"
"His power is equal to a demon god, and only one of them can single handedly destroy the entire kingdom and it's land, and Henry's techniques break the laws of this world"
"Is that even possible?"
"Nobody knows exactly how those techniques work and how he obtained the knowledge to use them, but he could use techniques like "Necrofantasia" and the "Dance of certain death""
"I now hope that he is dead too"
"Now then, what do you know about your magic except for what i told you"
"Almost nothing, except that it is only used with a sword or a similar weapon"
"That's wrong, i don't know who taught you, but they don't know what they are talking about!"
"How can i use my magic then?"
"You can basically control darkness itself, when you use the sword techniques, where do you think the dark energy comes from?"
"I don't know"
"Look under you"
Andrej looked, but he saw nothing on the floor, except..
"I get it, shadows"
"Correct, by drawing power from the natural darkness around you, you can use your techniques, so you can with enough skill manipulate shadows around yourself, and your techniques work best at night, when the world is naturally dark"
"I see, thank you miss, this has been helpful!"
"Anything for my student" "And to nurture this talent the right way, to make sure that the mistake we did with Henry does not repeat again"
Andrej then exited the library, where he saw Anya and Matej waiting for him.
"Explain idiot, you were studying when we were supposed to hang out?" Anya said threateningly.
"No, no, let me explain, professor Irina told me to come here after class, we just talked my about magic that is all"
"Hmph, fine, but tell us next time stupid"
"Okay, okay i get it"
"Let us go partner, we shall not make miss Katarina and Ivan wait any longer" Mateja said and they all made their way towards the front yard of the school, where they found Ivan and Katarina speaking under a tree, then Anya waved at them, which got their attention.
"Took you long enough" said Katarina.
"Sorry i had something to do" replied Andrej.
"Hello hero, how is life going" said Ivan.
"Ah it is perfect, this day is perfect, the sky is so clear, like a girl when.."
"That is enough" said Anya and she hit the hero with a branch she found on the ground, which earned the laughs of the three remaining members of the friend group.
"Hey Ivan, are you serious about sneaking out tonight? " asked Katarina
"Sneaking out? Where are you going" asked Andrej.
"Yes, to the nearest tavern" replied Ivan.
"Ooh i wanna go" exclaimed Andrej.
"Yes, yes i wanna go too, i have to show them who the hero is" said Mateja.
"Ugh, that place is not right for a lady like me" said Anya with disgust.
"Now, now don't be like that, maybe a fine gentleman is waiting for you there, you wouldn't know unless you went there" replied Ivan to Anya's comment.
"Fine, i will be going, but because of you not for some smelly dude" Anya said, and Ivan's world shattered.
"So when are we going?"
"Me and Ivan will be waiting for you underneath the west tower tonight, there are almost no guards there" said Katarina.
"Okay, now that we have a plan, i am going to pile up more leaves" said Ivan and used his wind to scatter all the leaves that the punished students gathered around the yard, before grabbing a rake and getting to his work.
"Why did he do that?" asked Mateja in confusion.
"I don't know, maybe it makes him happy?" Katarina said.
"Ivan works in difficult ways" concluded Andrej.
"Now then, i guess we should go get some sleep, see you tonight" said Anya and went for the dorms.
"See you!" shouted Katarina, and went to help Ivan with his leaf filled quest.
"Sneaking out huh? I haven't done that since i graduated from middle school, it would be nice to go and have a drink again, do they have alcohol here? Am i even allowed to drink since i am eight years old? Well one small drink can't hurt" thought Andrej while going towards his room.

8 674Delicate as Glass
[participant in the Royal Road Writathon challenge] Nuri, an [Assistant Glassworker], only has a single Skill. It’s really not fair. He’s worked in the hot shop his entire life, following in his father’s footsteps after his parents passed away, but he’s stuck. Despite possessing above-average talent as an artisan, he still hasn’t shed his [Assistant] status, gained a second Skill, or even leveled enough to reach the first Threshold. Besides, he’s bored; most days he daydreams of adventure and becoming a hero, or pines for the renown that’s sure to be his if he evolves his Class into a [Master Glass Smith], but nothing ever changes—until suddenly, fate strikes, and nothing is ever the same again. These days, Nuri sees more magic, prestige, and adventure than he can handle as he gets swept up in realm-shaking conspiracies and desperate fights for his life. Maybe a boring life wasn’t so bad after all. Disclaimers: 1) Names were mostly chosen through random generators and aren’t necessarily final. If they seem derivative or boring, blame RNG. 2) Skills, Classes, levels, and the entire system is currently a work in progress; please be kind if it’s not very well fleshed out yet. 3) This is the first full-length novel I've set out to write without a single plot point ready. I had nothing in mind other than a recent visit to a hot shop. Molten glass is pretty awesome. 4) Related, I know much less about glass than I’d like. I did some research, but mistakes are bound to happen. If you have a correction, thanks! Please be polite about it. 5) The prose is my experimental attempt at first-person, present tense. I realize it may not be everyone’s preference, but I hope you’ll give it a try anyway!
8 297Understanding a cultivation world
A modern man armed with having read a few novels about cultivation is suddenly transmigrated to a cultivation world. He fights to both survive and thrive in this new archaic world full of arrogant young masters, demonic sects, and incredibly hostile wildlife. Note: In this story, I wanted to focus a lot more on what most novels skim past in regards to cultivation, namely the whole, spiritual growth aspect that seems to be entirely absent from the prosses of obtaining enlightenment the majority of the time, but the method of gaining cultivation. how it works, and what kind of world would develop around it are all things I wish to explore in this novel.
8 150Liana in between Worlds
17 year old Liana is not as surprised as most people would be when she meets Inaya, coming from another world searching for a mysterious danger that could be disastrous for both worlds. She's always seen things others could not see, and she often finds it easier to befriend strange creatures from dreamworlds than her classmates. But now she's involved in a possible plot to eradicate our whole species, which makes her travel through a dead alien city and the oak wood of the Nummerfa who believe that our species are dangerous demons from hell, and other places in several different worlds. All she actually wanted was read her Tolkien book, or sit and watch the stars without being bothered by the existential problems of the Flying Spaghetti Monster. And how is she going to even explain her absence at school? 'Liana in Between Words' is a weird genre-defying mix of portal fantasy and scifi in a tale of friendship, loneliness, and the role of humans in the multiverse. This one contains absolutely no romance and no serious trigger warnings for sex, excessive violence, bad words or heavily traumatising content if you can handle the idea that there are people somewhere who think -maybe not completely without reason- that our species are destructive demons that should be eradicated.
