《Seeds of Evil: Rophion Forest》CHAPTER 4: Samaya

„Let’s go, Samaya! Faster!” Fenrir shouted at the little grey she-wolf, his twin sister, who was still far away behind him.
And Samaya listened to him and tried to catch up with him as faster as she could, and this made the run of the two wolf cubs, one after the other, seem to be a kind of race of power. But it wasn't only an external struggle, but an inner one too, and no matter how much didn't Fenrir try to make his sister become better in everything she was doing, Samaya wasn't making good progress in anything: neither in running nor in other things the other little wolf cubs were involved in every day. And this was really weird as if the two brothers hadn't been twins because while Fenrir was so energetic and full of life, Samaya preferred to live in the shadow.
Well, Samaya was generally considered a freak: she used to spend almost all day long in nature's lap, lying somewhere on a warm ground while admiring in silence the little creatures that were living in the forest. And what she loved the most was looking at the beautiful butterflies that were often playing with her little, black, and warm nose, and also listening to how the deer was drinking at the river.
And that „listening” was something that Samaya could only imagine because she had never listened to any sound, and the simple taste of the water, licked with her pink tongue, was making her a little bit shudder inside. And she named that thrill of her body, produced by the coldness of the water, „sound" because only that way she could get to know the world.
However, even if that way of knowing the world was something weird for others, it was normal for Samaya, for she hadn't the features of a normal person to know the world through hearing, speaking, or other sensations felt while one was understanding the sounds: she could only understand what was happening around, basing herself on her own instincts - for being deaf.
Namely the fact that she was different made the other members of her tribe consider her weird. But, to be honest, they weren't marginalizing her just because she couldn't hear or speak. It was because of her ability to understand them: what they were saying, what they wanted from her, or what they were trying to do behind her back. And this was so strange because - how could someone deaf understand a noise? How could a mute wolf cub communicate with his family? It's something Magic. Black Magic, maybe? And that's why they were often pushing her to the edge of the group while considering her to be the weak ring of their tribe.
But this was hurting Fenrir's heart, making it bleed so much, each time he was seeing this. And that pain in his soul was caused by the big love he had for his sister, and namely that love was driving him crazy sometimes, especially when he was seeing that all his efforts, all he did to make her react, were in vain: Samaya simply didn't want to cooperate. What she was really doing was sinking more into her noiseless world, opening her heart only for the creatures of the forest, but never for her people.
And this was so because instead of playing more with him or trying at least to get closer to her people, Samaya could spend hours and hours admiring the trees, the deer, the butterflies, or the flowers in the sunny glades. But she couldn't ever spend more than five minutes playing with Fenrir or the other wolf cubs, considering it boring, considering this as being something she couldn't understand, and this often made Fenrir furious, killing him inside, and slowly transforming him into a monster.

Actually, Fenrir still remembered the first time when he'd been rude to her. It probably happened when they were four or five and when he, as usual, tried to make her react and enter his game. But Samaya, as always, ignored him, turning her back on him and intending to go to one of the sunny glades to play with the butterflies, or maybe at the river to admire the deer. And this simply drove him crazy: he forgot about manners and, without even thinking about the fact that she couldn't hear him, he jumped over her and simply grounded her.
This reaction of her twin brother amazed Samaya so much. „What’s wrong with him?” she wondered, trying to stand up. But she found this impossible because Fenrir was pushing her to the ground with all his force while slowly grumbling at her.
„Aaa, his probably playing," she thought and decided to stay calm and to wait because she knew that he'll give up soon on the idea of making her play with him, and when he understands that she wasn't in the mood of playing, he'll go away, as he actually was generally doing.
Actually, she wasn't interested in games and this was only because she was frightened of the deafness that was swallowing her completely in the darkness of the sounds, and she was also afraid of those drums that were all the time heard in her head.
She didn't remember when or why did she start to listen to the drums, but she was so afraid of them. She was especially afraid of the moment when their sound was increasing in volume, making her inner ear strangely pulsate, her heart madly beat in her chest, and her breath interrupt. And when this happened, she always wanted to run away, for the frightening rhythm of the drums was sometimes unbearable, especially when it made her brain feel pain, and when that pain was so powerful, two eyes of fire were appearing in her imagination, on a white, giant screen, and a scary voice, that seem to come out of the void, was telling her: „you won't ever be able to hear any sound of the world you are living in until the time of the eternal darkness won't come again."
However, even if she listened to those words all the time, she could never understand them. And she hadn't anyone to ask about their meaning. That's why she tried to understand that message the voice from the void was trying to send her applying only to her limited knowledge of life. And, in time, she had associated the night the voice was talking about with the night that was coming on earth after the dusk when every single living creature goes to bed to recover powers for a new day and when she was feeling so relaxed, watching at the fireflies'blinking light, glimmering in front of her eyes, while the slow and rhythmical breath of her beloved brother, that was sleeping next to her, was so alluring and was making her also want to go to sleep, knowing that her father was somewhere next to them, watching their sleep, and this made her feel so protected.
Suddenly, the little she-wolf winced, feeling the deep bit of Fenrir's fangs on her fur. „Aaa," she shouted in her mind. „He's not playing this time. What's wrong with him? Why does he hurt me? Why is that mean with me today?"
Looking back, with furious eyes, Samaya shuddered again because she saw something devilish blinking in her brother's eyes, something that frightened her so much, but something that she couldn't understand what it was. „Really? Is this the time of the eternal night about which the voice was talking about? When everything will be sunken into darkness? If it's so, I'll teach that evil some manners, I'll teach it what means to mess with me and to try to steal my world," she yelled in her head, with all her power, and, after a few moments of showing her fangs to Fenrir, she also tasted from his ear.

„Aaa,” Fenrir yelled, crawling back and allowing his sister to breathe. But he was so amazed by her reaction because it was something she had never done before: react.
After a few meters of crawling back, Fenrir has decided that it was the right time to take back his human shape and right away transformed himself into a little boy: with his left ear bleeding and with his eyes bathed in tears because of the pain. But, even if that ear was hurting him a lot, the boy started to smile.
„What’s wrong with him?” was Samaya wondering while her eyes were also filling with tears and watching that little, stupid boy, she knew as her brother. But what was annoying her so much was the fact that he was smiling after he had hurt her. And this made her so upset, this made her shudder inside because of the anger, and this made her yell with all her heart: „A few minutes ago, he tried to hurt me. And now, is he smiling? Yes, he's laughing at me and he's so weird. That's why I don't consider you my brother anymore, Fenrir."
And she was right to be upset because that Fenrir, from in front of her, was so weird at that moment when he was staring at her as if he saw a ghost or something while she was crawling back, toward the trunk of a thick pine, transforming her body into a little girl: something that had never happened before.
Actually, both kids had been born as human babies. But soon after their birth, a few days after they had seen the sunlight for the first time, their power started to increase and the two transformed into wolf cubs. But unlike Fenrir who changed back his form at his father's command, Samaya continued in her wolf body.
This unexpected event made her parents alarm so much because if she hadn't taken back her baby's shape, then she would have died because of the hunger, and if she had died, her mother would have died too, because of the sorrow. But Samaya survived: despite all the worries, despite all the prognostications, despite all the weird talks of the other members of the tribe about her strange birth.
At first, Dike and Samandra, her parents, gave her to lick some cow milk. Later, they fed her cooked meat. Thus, years have passed, and Samaya grew up a little bit and could face life by herself. But even if her body was growing up every day like any other normal wolf cub, something was different about her: the fact that she couldn't hear or talk, and this brought later all the problems in her life like the marginalization, the whispers behind her back, and... the solitude.
„Can you talk to me?” she finally heard Fenrir’s voice in her head and this made her again wince.
„What? What is he talking about? He has definitely lost his mind. I'll complain to our father when I am able to do that, at the moment of darkness will come, that time the eyes are all the time talking about, in my head. And when that time comes and when the spell is broken, you'll see what I can do, Fenrir. And I swear that I'll tell father about everything you did to me today."
„Go ahead! Tell him!” Fenrir said. „But first, you must tell me about the voice and about the spell.”
„Aaa? What voice? What spell?”
„About which you just talked about. Only what. You said that.”
„Whaaat? Can Fenrir hear me? But, how?”
Samaya took a few steps toward Fenrir on all four because she was used to walking only on four legs and even if at that moment she was a little girl again and she could walk like any other normal kid, she simply didn't know how to do that. That's why she preferred to walk as she had done in those five years of her short life.
Getting a few millimeters from Fenrir’s face only, loudly breathing in his face, Samaya stared into his eyes. „They are normal again,” she thought. „He’s back to normal now. He’s not mad anymore.”
„Yeah, of course, I am normal. I’ve always been like that. I just … I was just upset with you. That’s all.”
„Huh, he did that again. He again talked to me, answering my question. But, how? How is this possible?”
For the first time Fenrir observed that Samaya wasn’t moving her lips while talking to him and still, he could hear her words. And even if that was the first time they could talk to each other, none of them knew how could they do that.
„Telepathy,” their father’s voice was heard not too far from them and both children, right away, looked at Dike, who was standing only a few steps away from them, kindly watching them.
„Telepathy?” Fenrir asked, barely keeping up with his feelings. „But … how is she doing this, papa? She doesn’t even move her lips, but I can hear her.”
„She’s talking with her heart. Just like you.”
„Just like me?” the little boy asked. „I don’t even know how to do this, papa. I never did this. I think you are wrong. It’s just…”
„…magic?” Dike answered with another question. „You don’t have to look for an explanation where is something magic involved, Fenrir. If this happens, you only have to accept this. Just like a gift the titans gave you."
Catching the curious glance Samaya had at that moment while staring at them and not understanding a word of what they said, Dike laughed. And both children had been so surprised by their father's reaction, not understanding at all the reason why did he laugh.
Quickly blinking from their lashes, both children kept staring at Dike, waiting for an answer because that laugh was really weird: neither Fenrir said something funny nor Samaya did something to provoke that laughter. Yet, Dike laughed. And... there was one more strange thing there: Fenrir wasn't sure that Dike could hear his sister's inner voice. But later when Dike was sitting between them while the three of them were sitting under a huge rotated pine, and Dike was also playing with a multicolored butterfly that sat down on his index finger, he told his children a secret they didn't know:
„This is something older than thousands of years,” Dike started his story. „It has started with father Chaos, the Father of the Universe, who invented this manner of talking after his defeat. And he did this because he could use only his huge eyes of fire, but he still had a lot of thoughts to tell the world. However, having no lips to use for talking, he has invented telepathy - to communicate with others. And, from what I can see, he blessed Samaya with this gift of using the mind for talking. And you've been also blessed, Fenrir, if you can hear her inner voice."
„What about you, father? Do you hear what she’s saying?” Fenrir asked him while his eyes were gleaming with curiosity.
„Of course, I hear her. Actually, I've heard everything she said, right from the moment she started to talk in her head. But because she couldn’t hear what I was saying or thinking, I preferred to wait because I was sure that, in time, she would learn how to control the flow of her thoughts and emotions and that, one day, she would be able to talk to us, too. And today it’s that day and you don’t know how happy I am, my boy,” Dike said and hugged his both children, gently kissing the top of their heads.
„But, father, how to talk to her from now on? I’m afraid I won’t be able to do this again,” Fenrir said with sadness.
„Just listen to your heart, son. If you really want to talk to someone, you’ll do this: using the voice of your mind or the one of your heart. And you’ll do this only if you have enough kindness in your heart to share with the world, my boy.”
Fenrir closed his eyes. He wasn’t that sure that what Dike said was something he could do, but he still decided to do this. So, after closing his eyes, he formed the words in his head, the words that he wanted to tell Samaya, but … he couldn’t find any magical channel through which to send them to Samaya. So, he became again sad and, deeply sighing, he said: „Nothing happens, papa. I can’t do it.”
„Yes, you can,” he heard again Samaya’s voice in his head and he understood that she was very happy. „I’m hearing your words. You said you love me,” and this was true. Those were the words he tried to send to Samaya.
„But … how can she hear me? There wasn’t any channel through which to send the words and…”
„Just … I hear you, and this is all that matters,” Samaya said in a happy voice. „Right, papa? If I can hear you and Fenrir, does it mean that the spell is broken now?”
„The spell? What spell?” Dike asked because he really didn’t know anything about any spell. He had had never enemies on this Planet and also nothing evil happened to him in those ten thousand years since he came on Earth. The only one who could wish him ill was Eris, but she was still imprisoned in Māṉsṭar Kēlaksi, and, from what he knows, her evil thoughts couldn’t reach Earth: it was too far, it was impossible.
„There are drums in my head,” Samaya suddenly said. „They are always talking to me and they say that the spell will be broken at the moment the night of shadows will take over the world again and, only then, I’ll be able to hear the sounds of nature and the melody of your voice, father.”
„And, who is talking to you?!” Dike asked, mirroring his glance in her eyes. „Can you see who is talking to you?”
„Two eyes of fire,” Samaya answered. „But … they aren’t that frightening now as they had been at the beginning. The last time when they talked to me, I mean last night, I could see them and it was a glimmer of fear in that glance. And I think that they were also crying, papa.”
Chaos! Chaos was talking to Samaya for so long, but Dike didn’t know about this. Yes, he had been punished for letting Eris’heart escape from Māṉsṭar Kēlaksi and hide somewhere, but he was sure that Chaos didn't hate him and that Dike was still his faithful servant. But, Chaos cried, in Samaya’s dream. Why did he cry? It can’t be. Chaos was just an amalgam of dead stars and he had no soul. How could he cry then? Or... at least it had been at the beginning. At that moment alive were only his eyes, and maybe his heart which was also the heart of the Cosmos.
And Dike also knew that Chaos had limitless power, but he had never known that he had a soul too. This means Dike could never totally understand his father and also, he hadn’t been ever capable of understanding his messages. That’s why Chaos chose Samaya as his messenger in the world and that meant that something evil was floating in the air.

Lesser Evil
In a perfect world, an alcoholic, hedonistic, mentally abusive individual like Audry Forge would never coincide with his attempts to stop the extinction of life. But there is no perfect world. There is no other person. Only the lesser of evils. Participant of the Royal Road Writathon challenge - 55k words Author's Note: This is story has been the easiest to write in my time of writing. I thoroughly enjoy it! You may not understand the premise in the first few chapters but need not worry buddy, I've been working ahead. Things will start rolling! I hope you enjoy it. Give me feedback and make sure to share it around! Other Info: Normally I wouldn't put any warnings but this story will be going down a pretty dark path (based on irl experiences) fairly early on. There will not be any overtly sexual content this early but some themes are suggestive. There is profanity. There are references to drugs and alcohol. There are dramatic relationships that I'm trying to base off of real life. There is more of a focus on characters. There will be unpleasant scenes in regards to death, while others will be brushed over. There will also be a fair amount of pop culture references too! Give it a try. You might like my form of storytelling!
