《Enigma (Rogue #2)》Chapter 27

"Damn," Jay whispered next to Eniola as they walked through the opening of an underground tunnel in the Beijing Airport. The airport had been closed, but the PSEUDO being the PSEUDO had come in. These were the tunnels they put the citizens inside during Paradox's stunt at the airport. And these tunnels led into a huge flight hangar, where they parked planes for the time being.
Eniola looked over at Kain, whose fingers already toggled on the screens. At once, a slight glitch rippled around the room before the androids collapsed to the ground simultaneously. Sparks flew and burst from cameras mounted in the corners.
Eniola pretended it didn't just happen effortlessly. Josanne and Sasha, who flanked behind him, didn't seem to be surprised. She looked over at Zaira, who had swallowed a gulp as she saw it.
Eniola also pretended not to hear her gut yelling at her. She was in imminent danger and Kain had other plans. She had tried to find a time to warn everyone, but Kain or some other PSEUDO member wouldn't stop following her around the Beijing safe house.
Eniola had to warn them. Kain was dangerous. Fatima and Bee had warned them. As unhinged as Bee seemed, he was right. Fatima told them that other people targeted Zaira, and those people were the PSEUDO.
They walked right into their trap.
Eniola turned over to Lucia, who caught her gaze. Eniola mouthed. "We need to talk."
Lucia raised an eyebrow, and Josanne’s gaze burned into her instantly. Eniola swallowed back a gulp and looked forward.
"It's nice," Eniola quickly made up. "The flight hangar. Which one is ours?"
"The one right there," Kain said, as he pointed in front of them. It was a generic sleek back auto-plane as there were 3 more of them in the hangar. It looked oddly big for a group that had a vendetta against rich people. Eniola still wondered where they got the money. "It's not too gaudy."
According to Kain, some PSEUDO members in Australia already waited for them. All they needed to do was follow and finally kick Paradox's ass. Eniola wanted to feel relieved Paradox was finally going to be put to an end and that perhaps she could have a normal life. But despite it, her gut still screamed at her it wouldn't happen.

"Do you still have the link?" Kain asked Iris.
"It's still in my range," Iris replied, as they all approached the side door of the plane. Like on command, the ramp stretched out and stairs descended. Kain walked up first like he was trying to dominate the stairs before Sasha and Josanne followed out from behind him.
"Come in," Kain hissed. "And be quick because there are cameras here."
"We still have our identities," Theo said. They had put back on their fake identities Bee had given them and once again Eniola was Moniquisha Jenkins, unfortunately. She would still never forgive Bee for such berserk names.
Eniola timidly walked up the stairs as she walked amid all the PSEUDO members on the plane. For a moment, she froze in between the stairs and gulped.
"What did you want to tell me?" Lucia suddenly whispered. Eniola turned to her, but at the same moment, Hyejin cut in between them before she turned back to them with her colour-changing eyes.
"I'll tell you later," Eniola replied.
The plane isn't like the one that took them into Seoul. It's more vast and doesn't have rows of pods. Instead, there is a huge strategies table in the middle of the room, with holo-screens all around it. Around it is all the seats. Every member took their own while some separated into doors. But as Eniola looked, there weren't that many.
Eniola felt someone brush past her. “Come with me," Kain’s voice was serious in her ear.
"I think I'm going to stay out here," Eniola said, as nervousness coated her voice.
"I don't think you should," Kain replied. "I need to talk to you alone. It's important."
Eniola huffed before her eyes landed on Jay's narrowed eyes on the both of them. She wanted to tell him it wasn't anything weird, but the time was weird now.
"Talk to you later," Eniola mouthed before she followed him down a narrow corridor into another private room separated by a sliding door. There were two seats and a small table between them. There was a fridge on one side and a bed in the corner. It looked more homely than anything. Eniola looked around. Josanne wasn't in here. Josanne was always with him.

Kain took a seat farthest across from her before he gestured his hand to the one in front of her. Eniola didn't sit down.
"It won't bite you," Kain snapped. "Take a seat."
Eniola slowly sat down across from Kain, like the seat might've exploded on contact. His gaze narrowed on hers and she averted hers.
"Are you hungry or thirsty?" Kain asked. "There are things you can eat."
"I'm fine," Eniola replied. "Now, can you tell me what this is all about?"
Kain took in a breath before his eyes lolled their way back to her again. Eniola grimaced. She didn't like the weird eye contact. It felt oddly intimate, something she should've never been involved in. "I've been meaning to talk to you about something."
"Are you going to tell me what it is, or are you going to keep being ominous?" Eniola asked.
"I want you to join the PSEUDO," he said outright.
"I'm sorry what?" Eniola asked loudly, as her eyes blinked repeatedly.
"You heard me," he said. "I want you to join. Be part of our organization and fight with us. You're such a good match."
Kain wasn't serious. Eniola still didn't get it. What made Kain think Eniola was a match for a criminal organization? Eniola's jaw unhinged itself from its place. It was a prank. Kain must've been joking. But she looked again. All seriousness was on his face.
"What makes you think I want to come and march with you and fight all across the world? And you even said we didn't have to join!" Eniola yelled.
"But Eniola," he began quietly. "I see a different spark in you. You're smart and you're driven for change. You could be one of our strategies, or even hackers. You could help change this world and join us."
"I can't just drop everything for you!" Eniola argued. "I have a family, and I have friends, I have a life, and I have..." She stopped for a moment, trying to catch her words.
"SCOPE?" Kain finished for her. "You don't have that anymore. The SCOPE community has blacklisted you because of your so-called crimes. SCOPE isn't in your future anymore. But this could be. Think about it Eniola."
"Kain, I can't do this," Eniola huffed. "I can't join you and I'm so sorry, but that's not something I can do right now."
Kain simply sat back and brushed his tongue against his teeth. "Do you even want to defeat Paradox?"
"Huh?" she asked. "Of course. Isn't that the whole point of this journey?"
Kain leaned closer again and spoke in a low whisper. "Then tell me why you've been so indifferent this entire time?"
"What are you trying to accuse me of?" Eniola asked with an eyebrow raised.
"You seem different," Kain spoke up. "You've been hesitant these past few days."
"No, I haven't," Eniola denied.
"Is it because of Paradox?" Kain asked. "Or Keone?"
Eniola froze. The way he said it seemed so knowing. Of course. Kain knew everything about her. It wouldn't surprise if Kain knew her future too.
"Are you hesitant because there's still something to cling onto?" he lured. "Like love?"
The L-word caught Eniola off guard. "That's not for you to bring up," she snapped. She hadn't thought about Keone in a while. Not since he became Paradox, and they thought she defeated him.
"And I'm not hesitant," Eniola said. "I don't have to explain anything to you."
"Do you love him?" Kain said and threw out that L-word. "Jay?"
"As I said," she said, her tone coated with quiet anger. "It's none of your business." Eniola stood up and maintained angry eye contact with him before she turned and faced the door.
"Oh Eniola," Kain said. "I would suggest that soon, you watch out."
"For what?" Eniola replied.
"You know," he mumbled.
Eniola grit her teeth before she turned away. "And for a group that claims to fight for equality, these planes and houses sure seem huge as hell." That was all she said before walking out of the private room and into the main room.
She had to get as far away from Kain as she could.

MARY: The Dreadful
[participant in the Royal Road Writathon challenge] "You have to survive, Adam. You have to win." This is not a story starring Mary, because Mary is already dead. She bled out on her front doorstep following a sudden three-day absence. Seven years have passed, with her little brother—Adam—now standing at eighteen years of age. Following his sister's death, he lived the life of a delinquent, wandering the grimy streets of the city of Steeldale. All it amounted to was years of street fighting experience, no proper home and an uncertain future at a second-rate university. Unbeknowst to him, the day before university, he will be thrust from Steeldale into a brand new world. It is a world where a cherry red sky gazes down upon a fragmented continent, on which civilisations from other worlds have been dumped like refuse. The souls of man leak from their fingertips, coalescencing into superhuman powers and horrible fleshy monstrosities. Tribes of refugees clash against each other, attempting to carve out a place in this unrefined space. With no choice, Adam must traverse this dangerous new world, with Mary's shadow following him every step of the way. This is my entry to the April 2021 Writathon. Chapters will be posted as I write them.
