《Enigma (Rogue #2)》Chapter 20

"This is the training room where you'll be spending most of your time," Kain said, as the doors to a vast room opened. Josanne was at his side. "Like now."
Eniola's eyes opened wide into the midst of the crowd of her friends. The first thing she thought about was where they could fit this into such a small pagoda. But Kain had found a way. He seemed like the guy who'd always find a way. But Eniola was even sure now.
The room was large, and octagonal signal sensors, like the ones they put in the SCOPE arenas, covered the walls. The ground was soft, like some rubbery cushion Eniola suspected would hurt if she fell. There were already some people there.
"What is this place?" Iris asked.
"It looks like a SCOPE arena," Eniola replied. Slight joy went through her and went out as quickly as it came.
"It's not," Kain replied. "It's a training simulation area slash gym we used to train members. You'll be joining them over here for the next month."
"Month?" Lucia suddenly asked. "What if Paradox leaves Beijing?"
Kain turned back to her with a plastered-on smile. "Then he'll leave and we'll track him. The most important thing will make sure you guys can adapt to our environment."
"So, what are we going to do here?" Theo asked.
"You are going to be training here," Kain said. "If you all have your SCOPELenses, we can connect them here since it uses the same software. There are a variety of simulations we used to prepare for any situation. And don't worry, they are very real life."
"That didn't sound good," Jay whispered down to Eniola. He was right. Kain emphasized things strangely. And speaking of Kain, he walked away slowly and left them right in the middle. Eniola took the time to reach into her pockets and pull out her SCOPElenses. When they were on, they didn't connect to the software of SCOPE, but the PSUEDOs, one without yeon count, inventory, or all the game gimmicks. It felt weird.

When Eniola turned, she faced colour-changing eyes staring at her through a lens and Eniola almost jumped. It wasn't until she looked down and fully saw the girl.
Black metal plating for hands and fake eyes, which a slit eyebrow sat atop of one. Eniola realized it was the hairy girl from the convenience store. She looked like she should've been learning her multiplication tables instead of fighting in this organization. She was slightly shorter than Eniola, and Eniola could see her face because her hair did not cover it. It was childlike yet seemed hardened by apparent years on the street. Her hair instead was tucked away in a slick high bun above her head.
"If you're going to keep staring at me, I might as well tell you my name, Eniola," she huffed in a high-pitched voice. Middle school. "My name is Hyejin."
Eniola didn't realize Theo was behind her until she heard one of his trademarked gasps. "Aren't you the girl who rang us up at the store?"
"She is," Eniola whispered to him.
"You look very young," Theo said.
"Thanks, it's because of all the blood I drink," Hyejin said with a straight face. Eniola and Theo both faced each other with confused eyes.
"You're not believing me, right?" she grumbled. "I'm just 14."
"Aren't you a little too young to be here?"
"Here's a suggestion," she said. "Focus on your business and I'll focus on mine."
"Hold on," Theo suddenly said. "Where's Zaira?"
"She won't be training with you," a deep voice came from behind. Eniola turned to see a short but very muscular guy walking behind him. His hair was shot and buzzed, which made him look like a badass egg. "She's with the hackers."

"Who are you?" Lucia asked.
"My name is Wuying," he replied. "That's all you need to know."
Eniola wasn't even going to ask. She would not wonder about his backstory or anything. Not when she could spend some time wondering if Hyejin somehow missed the school bus and ended up on the PSEUDO.
Eniola instead stood amid the PSEUDO members, who looked like they could all bodycheck her in a fight. Eniola didn't know if she could fight, because she'd never had to go outside of SCOPE. But Eniola didn't need to go into their simulation to know it was different.
Don't look nervous. Eniola swallowed a gulp and stood with her feet slightly apart instead of close and uptight. It was obvious Eniola, or her friends didn't belong here, but she wanted to at least give herself the comforting lie that she could convince them.
Then the world went dark, but this time it wasn't another Paradox comeback. Everyone got into readying positions and Eniola did but not long after. Then the simulation started.

Harmless Sweetie (Rewritten)
*UPDATES EVERY MONDAY AND FRIDAY, SOMETIMES MORE IF I DON'T HAVE SCHOOLWORK. **This is tagged as comedy but I have a really stupid and peculiar sense of humor so yeah. "That's an eldritch horror." "No it's not, it's a frog." "Why does it have ten eyes and eight rows of teeth, not just that but why does it just perpetually scream with the voices of the ones whose mind it has eaten." "I'm just not that good at anatomy." *** Clailip Diancia, the tiny boy who dances along the threads of fate woven by a wicked witch. Not knowing of the plans of the witch that once scorched the lands, and unknowing of the abyss that beckons him forth. This harmless sweetie watches the stories of those around him. Ever unconscious of the turning loom of fate, always oblivious of the stories, legends, and tapestries of heroes that revolve around him as he goes, as he dances, and as he prances, leaving myths and rumours wherever he might set foot in. But as he is unaware of those whose fates have intertwined with his, he is also blind to the soul-piercing stares of the Abyss, ever calling to him.

Luck And Chronomancy
Time Magic is the best magic as everyone knows, although there are lots of unique Talents in the world. Most people only remember Haste because it is hard to get to higher Phases of Chronomancy. That is still enough to make the Talent iconic. A lucky enough Aleatory Talent can position you for greatness or leave you languishing in obscurity. The only true equality in the world is when that glowing message pops up at 8 years old. Even if it doesn't activate until you are an adult at 16 you still know. Sure you can find a new dungeon spawn and get another chance at a rare Talent, even this one, but you have to already be ready to delve into the *Far Wilds*, which is far easier with wealth or family power. This is the story of where my good fortune took me and the difference it made, even among a party of 7 others including an Arcanist. It is a journey of magic and monsters but also math, which some think is actually worse. Luckily I was born with Intelligence and Focus as my personal traits, and my parents were scholars. Of course Chronomancy can also be a frontline combat talent. Versitility well beyond other Elder Talents like Gravity, Abstraction, or Arcana. Might could have worked for me, too. I also met a runaway princess. All the best adventures have a princess. She hated being a noble and we didn't get married but it still counts. Besides she really filled out our front line. All that Leadership training came in handy. I still don't know where she's from. Who cares? How well Haste goes with giant hammers is what's important. I never learned much about anyone in the party, except the one I grew up with. I'm not a people person. I just wanted to optimize dungeon clearing time. *******Story Details******* No romance, politics, or traumatizing content, slice of life, or even dialogue. 1st person narration, like a guide/adventure log. 2000-7000 words a day, maybe 40-60% rpgish combat log with some reasoning on combat decisions, with the rest character Talent discussion and progression stuff. 8 person party with a decent variety in roles. Party members usually have 2 primary functions. Told from the support/control Chronomancer's perspective. Each party member will have 6 Basic/Background Traits, then 3 actual Talents with abilities. Capstone from their Educational Institution, Arbritrary as a gift from the temples, and Aleatory which is decided at birth, revealed at 8, and activated after adulthood at 16. Aleatory Traits ignore requirements and are random why is why they are so important. They'll gain new Talents from finding Dungeons to consume in the *Wilds*. Mature dungeons in cities can provide *Challenges* to raise the Phase of a Talent, up to 3 times from 1 to 4. Each character will get to roughly 8 non-Trait Talents. Attributes come exclusive from Talents, are required by Talents, and provide various effects as well. I designed about 220 Talents with abilities, 4 in each of 4 phases. "Traits" are just Attribute stuff. I'm not sure how many will be detailed in the story, more than 100 for sure. I used Talents because I want to be free of the legacy of tabletop. Half those rules are just because of the limitations inherent in a pre-computer ttrpg. This story mostly uses combat Talents, although like 1/3 of the 220 are for crafting and other society and economy stuff. If you really wanted to be a Thief you might take Intuition, Awarness, and Might for Basic Traits and Deftness, Manipulation, and Trickery for Family/Education. Then you'd pick Acrobatics, and Climbing for Educational Capstone and Arbitrary traits. You Aleatory Trait might be Shadow(Light/Dark) Magic, Umbramancy. A Bard might swap Dexterity for Charisma, Music for Acrobatics, and have gotten Illusion(Shadow/Sound(Air/Force)) for their Aleatory Trait.
