Arriving at the withered forest entrance of Cymbal forest Elaine demounts from her steed and, seeing the fresh wheel tracks from several wagons Elaine finds her track and begins following it. Seeing the small bird still following her she cast a spell and tells it to fly away from danger and to inform its friends to flee to her home. Accepting the request Elaine sees the bird flying away into the forest. Steeling herself she heads into Cymbal forest, clenching her staff she keep an eye on the wagon tracks. Rushing through the forest she finally end up at a small grove to rest for a moment she begins fixing her attire and while waiting she senses a presence from her side. Reading her staff she quickly turns around for combat but upon seeing a small fairy crying while sitting on a small rock. She drops her guard and slowly walk over to it.
"Hi little friend, what happened?" Elaine asked tenderly.
"They were so evil, I was just trying to befriend one of them and a bad man attacked me." The young fairy said as she sniffled her nose.
"Its okay, can you tell me anything about them?" Elaine asked.
"They were so many, a lot of them had pointy weapons and they were carrying a lot of injured people on their carts." The fairy explained.
Thinking for a moment she hands over several berries, seeing the sweet berries the fairy light up in joy it thanks Elaine before munching on one of the berries with glee. Seeing the fairy happy again Elaine continue her hunt for the intruders. After several hours of tracking Elaine arrives at the scene of a big battle between a large pack of wolves and something, not seeing bodies except for the wolves Elaine becomes infuriated at the intruders for their baseless killing of animals.

Casting a spell green energy flow out from her hand and green roots begins to wrap around the wolves bodies and they slowly were dragged beneath the ground to return to the earth. Seeing the empty forest floor Elaine was about to leave but noticed a small silver wolf pup laying beside a large silver wolf, Elaine assumed the wolf was its mother. Walking over to it she notices the young pup was clinging unto the dead wolves paw, sorrow filled Elaine's heart she lifted up the young pup and cast a spell to talk to it.
"I'm sorry little friend." Elaine said as she gently hugged the tired wolf pup.
"I don't understand why my family would kill each other." The young wolf said as it whimpered in Elaine's hold.
"Huh, your family killed each other? It wasn't the intruders?" Confused Elaine asked the pup to explain.
"No it was..." As the wolf pup began explaining Elaine could feel it gently sleeping in its arms.
"Dammit." Frustrated she summoned her steed once again and tied together her cloak into a small bag and placed it into it. Commanding the elk to gently carry the pup to their home she looked on as the elk began walking east towards Elaine's glade in the forest.
Continuing her hunt for the intruders she noticed that the wagon tracks where heading in one direction and fresh tracks from several people heading in another direction, pausing for a moment Elaine chose to follow the tracks of the soldiers. Walking for a few minutes she saw the appearance of the same monuments from before.
"Why are the intruders here? Are they in allegiance with that monster?" Elaine thought to herself while circling around the glade to get a better perspective on the monument and the hidden intruders.

Laying still she suddenly saw a cloaked person entering the glade, unsure if its a villager or intruder Elaine waited but was instead horrified when she saw the cloaked person holding the dead corpse of a wild boar. Remembering the last time she was here cold sweat began forming. trying to look at the cloaked persons face her horror turned into anger as she saw the same man that killed her kin before. Suddenly the man began speaking into the air.
"Great Hyrix, answer my call and partake in my offering."
Watching his body for any sudden movements she noticed that he placed the boars corpse before the monument as before and a few moments later the same black smoke began rising from the tallest stone and before the man the same be-winged monster sat perched upon the largest stone.
"It seems like you have of no value to me anymore, I yearn for elven flesh, not boars and deers." Hyrix hissed at the man. Elaine looked on as the same black tendrils sprouted from the ground, seeing and hearing the frantic screaming of the man she waited until the monster was finished. Seeing the monster sitting lazily on the monument Elaine steeled her resolve and with her staff she began twirling it in front of her and from thin air white mist began quickly enveloping the large glade. Elaine kept her eyes locked on the monster, seeing it suddenly turning its head in the direction of her its cracked lips turned up into a frightening smile.
"It seems like an elf has returned to be slaughtered, maybe the fool was of use after all." The creature spoke as it evaded several projectiles flying from the mist.
Sensing danger she formed a spell and several thorn clusters formed from the woods around her and launched them at the monster.
Suddenly from her right she heard a battle cry call out from the woods.
"NOW!" The voice roared out as Elaine saw a man wielding two sword rushing towards the monster with a many soldiers behind him.
"For now I have to kill the monster, then the intruders." Elaine thought to herself as she entered the glade and began casting spells at the monster.

Meek
After failing as an apprentice cooper and a town guard, Eli finds his place at the Rockbridge archives. Sure, he's the oldest 'junior scribe,' but he likes the job. And he's good at it, too. Then he completes an apparently-insignificant project, and the brutal reaction shocks him--with consequences that eventually shake the world. Eli gains powers. Rare and inhuman abilities. He progresses slowly, steadily, and not without setbacks. He changes, too. Is he a hero, a villain, a human, a monster? Depends who you ask. Meek is an epic fantasy with elements of progression. The basic magic is simple: five Paths, each with a different powerset. However, complexity arises from combinations, and the protagonist wields a magic all his own. Meek is set in the Valley, the only (as far as anyone knows) human empire that survived a Final Battle against a terrible foe. The Valley is warded against infiltration, but the enemy learned how to warp human souls, to foment discord within. However, another soul is also ... changed. Perhaps even 'warped.' And that soul is starting on a long (long, long) path that might, one day, prove that the Final Battle wasn't so final after all.

For those unfamiliar with my writing style, Second Chances was my first attempt at writing. I'm not sure how much I learned in the process, except that readers get angry when you mess with characters they like! Warnings - I tend to info dump. I know I do this, I like slice of life novels that take time to unfold. So don't expect action, murder, and battles in every chapter, it isn't going to happen I prefer the first-person narrative. I will do an occasional POV shift, but it will never be done mid-chapter. I hope you enjoy the story, comments, ratings, and favorites are greatly appreciated!
