No pergaminho oculto um contrato que esquecemos, mas que o espirito persegue.
A demiana balançou a cabeça, revoltada, o ódio transpirando por todo seu ser.
De súbito desceu em total silêncio no descampado, aos pés da grande rocha onde ele estava sentado, pensativo, perto de uma floresta vasta e escura.
Ele era imenso, ela viu. Ele era escuro, as asas marrons, o corpo forte como uma torre meio avermelhada. Quando ele se virou para olhar rapidamente para ela, ela viu aquele rosto duro e um pouco quadrado. E havia aquela íris totalmente vermelha em tons bem escuro, como sangue coagulado, o que a disfarçava bem na esclera totalmente preta, onde, estranhamente, a pupila era facilmente identificada.
- Ora, então o que ouvi é verdade... Resolveu mesmo mudar para a forma dos homens – zombou. – Uma forma bem feia, essa que se deu, devo acrescentar.
Mercator inspirou fundo, repetindo para si mesmo que tudo estava bem. Desde que descera ali naquele espaço amplo havia encontrado algo como uma linha de paz. Com muito cuidado e suavidade lançou sua atenção para o novo ser que vinha contra ele. Notou que havia um ódio frio e confuso ali, e decidiu que não trocaria qualquer enfrentamento pelo frágil momento de sossego que havia conseguido.
- Éfrera... – suspirou, colhendo alguma informação dela nas linhas de tempo. – Uma demiana... Enlouquecida como todos nós, procurando saber quem é...
- Foi você, o causador de tudo – ela acusou recolhendo as negras asas, que desapareceram às suas costas.
Mercator a observou em silêncio, sem fazer qualquer movimento, mantendo fragilmente a sensação da paz que obtivera, mesmo que tivesse sido por apenas alguns minúsculos segundos.
> Tudo é culpa sua, todo esse tormento, toda essa dor – acusou.
Mercator se levantou e se virou lentamente, se afastando. Após alguns passos, num impulso violento, se perdeu dentro da floresta negra.

A demiana ficou observando com desprezo o lugar onde ele tinha sumido, indecisa se ia atrás dele e o punia ou se esquecia de tê-lo encontrado e o deixava com seu destino triste.
Ela se afastava, a indecisão corroendo sua alma. Então parou e se voltou novamente para o lugar onde ele tinha desaparecido, entre as árvores. Com um curto grunhido se lançou veloz em seu encalço.
Ela não sabia onde ele tinha ido, mas desconfiava que seria para a parte mais profunda da floresta.
Narrativas desse demônio solitário, escondido em escuras florestas ou no topo de altas montanhas eram conhecidas por todos.
Muitas léguas para dentro das sombras da floresta deu com um local morto, destruído. Viu um pequeno monte, um antigo e abandonado sambaqui, no topo do qual havia sido colocada uma enorme pedra, aos pés da qual se insinuava uma poça de água. E, distraído em sua água, um demônio imenso parecia perdido.
Devagar foi avançando, diminuindo a distância para o demônio, que não demonstrava qualquer sinal de ter conhecimento de sua presença.
