《The Fox Girl From The White Plains》Chapter 10: What is your path?

I went to his encounter, who waited patiently for me.

“These are the weapons I deem worthwhile other than my favorite ones,” his arm gallantly floated on top of them from left to right.

And my eyes followed its movement, focusing on the trail and the diverse options for me to choose.

‘Hum... I didn’t expect to have this kind of choice,’ my head tilted to the side, filled with confusion regarding what my next action should be.

“I’m not sure which one to pick,” my eyes surveyed over them, finding a bow, axe, spear, and a few others. I wasn’t quite sure what they were.

‘Compared to my past life, these are quite old. Is there even a reason to learn them?’

I pointed my finger at the table, gazing at him.

“I truly don’t know, my lord, but perhaps I could give all of them a try?”

Despite my words, there was not a sign of disappointment in his expression, almost like he predicted this outcome. And for some reason, he gave me enough time to look over them without telling me what they were and their usage.

“Kid, do you not know your calling?”

My eyes widened and my eyebrows furrowed at his question.

“How I’m called? My name?”

He laughed despite feeling astonished at my ignorance.

“Seems like you are just a peasant from the fox tribe.”

Unsure whether to take that as an insult or not, I gripped my right hand.

“I don’t have memories from before Keru saved me, but could you perhaps teach me about the calling?”

He looked at me in disbelief, not due to my curiosity in wanting to know more, but for lacking that which was natural for anyone to own.

The many tiny fragments made me who I was supposed to be. However, not having any indicated no less and no more than unease to myself and those around me. And also, it made me be no one. Except, luckily, I retained Yuki’s side of the memories, even if they weren’t that helpful in a strange and fresh world such as this one.

“That’s...” Astal then muttered without doubting me, “unexpected.”

Without wanting to repress my will to the future tasks, he pointed at me.

“We attain a calling per life, and this is a choice that everyone takes,” his hand got hold of a rapier.

“For example, mine, since the day my father and grandfather instructed me has been sword master,” the weapon suddenly struck the air at a speed that my eyes couldn’t hope to follow.

One clean hit after another. If there was an enemy in front of him, its body would end up filled with holes.

‘I didn’t expect it to be like that...’ my mouth opened, amazed, realizing that perhaps these weapons were as good as any other. Even when compared to the firearms used by the riflemen.

‘Is everyone as good as him?’ I pondered in disbelief. After all, if others were this strong, it would be a hard place to live in. It was no different from back then when the armies from enemy countries did as they wished throughout the lands they conquered.

I gulped drily at my unease, causing Astal to cease his movements.

“Very well. Let’s stick to the first step into the basics.”

“Yes please,” My body faced him, leaving the weapons on my right resting on the table.

“Copy me,” his hand quickly rose to the chest, palm laying on his heart, and then a peculiar word came forth through his lips, “index.”

I quickly grew excited with a black barrier of sorts appearing between us. Thus, I copied him, causing something to appear in front of me, but this time with white letters faced towards me.

Named | Age: 15 Red Moons | Race: Red Fox | Evolution: | Calling:

Innate Traits: Enhanced senses, Night vision, Sensitive tail and ears.

Transmigration: Retain memories. Grandmother’s wish: Contract Gifts: Timing, Karma.

“Something appeared!” I shouted happily, filled with excitement.

“Good,” he waved his hand through the middle of it, like splitting a brick into half, causing his board to disappear.

“Come and see, my lord,” I noticed his head wavering to the sides.

“You must never share the information you have in there. It’ll allow others to know of your strengths and weaknesses and that is far too dangerous.”

“I understand...” my eyes scrolled through the information, reading it calmly.

‘The first three are simple to understand, but what about this evolution thing?’ I tilted my head in confusion while poking my chin with dubious eyes.

“Feel free to touch the words in it if you’re having doubts,” he gestured, touching the emptiness between us.

I consented with a nod, quickly touching the words that brought doubts to my mind. To my surprise, information flooded me mentally whenever I did so.

‘Evolution is the progress to where your body attains a new height, possibly forcing a change to your specie.’

‘I’m a red fox currently, meaning that I might become something else in the future,’ my mouth opened in amazement due to this new information, further causing my tail to wag from the excitement.

Without further ado, my finger went on for the next word.

‘Sprout is the initial phase of evolution.’

My ears twitched to the center of my head, ‘I guess that I’m far away from reaching anything.’

“Once you reach that stage, you’ll have to think about what you want the most in this life, since you won’t be able to change it later. And, depending on your choice, the way you’ll face this world will change quite a lot.”

“Alright, thank you, my lord,” I smiled at him, selecting the option he commented about. As I did, his feet took him to the outside, leaving me alone to face the following scene.

My body slowly gave in, ceasing a malfunction, causing part by part to fall on the ground, resting on it.

A vibrant voice, angelical perhaps, filled with happiness, rang in my mind, enlightening me about its endeavors.

Multiple scenes unfolded in my mind one after another, possibly memories of those who may have lived in this world. The first one was that of a happy elderly woman making a dessert, naming herself a baker. A young cute wolf lifting an ax, choosing to become a warrior. It gave me the sense that not everyone from the grey clan was evil, a blessing in disguise, surely.

The voice incited me, showing me additional people along with their choices. A strange mixture that I wasn’t knowledgeable about appeared. A combination of hyena and human, certainly a humanoid race like mine, but different. It looked far more animalistic than mine and dangerous.

‘What is that!?’ Sadly, to my doubts, an explanation didn’t come forth. Instead, it showed me its choice, an avenger. Yet another scene quickly followed this one. This time, a figure with pointy ears wielded a bow, thus opting to become an archer.

‘There are so many choices...’ I complained to myself, feeling overwhelmed, and as I did, the scenes stopped appearing, and blankness remained. In its place, a null space where only I stood remained.

I exhaled some air, an action without actually doing it, as I was currently inside my mind. Yet, thinking about it calmed me, and it gave my mind the quietness I needed then.

“Astal...” my voice muttered softly, reminded of the path he and his ancestors took. Clueless as I was about the ways of the world, this felt as good as anything else. But there was a distinct difference. I had that great man who seemed willing to teach me more.

‘Would he be upset if I chose the same as him?’ I swayed my head to the sides, feeling that I shouldn’t give in to random thoughts and doubts.

‘He said he took sword... hum? What was it again?’ I wondered for a bit, trying to remember, and then, to my surprise, a fresh vision appeared in front of me. It was one of a fox who danced in what appeared to be a festival of sorts. Yellow sand remained beneath her feet, and waves of blue reached that shore.

“Right! That was the name! I want my calling to be a sword dancer!” My mind left the haziness of my subconscious, allowing my sight to return to the real world. At that, information slipped into my mind, surprising me.

“My wh-“ a hue exuded from my pores, basking its light onto my skin majestically. The orange in my eyes became more vivid with the red aura.

“What is this?” I took a seat on the wooden floor, repeating the tip that Astral had given me, looking at the new information that was now displayed on it.

Calling: | Aura:

At the very top, I could find the aspiration I selected, and next to it, there was something freshly imprinted on it.

“Heat?” I voiced out, having nothing happening from doing so.

“How strange,” muttering escaped my lips alongside the entangled curiosity on my tongue.

With my calmness returning along with my senses, I began hearing what sounded like metal clashing.

‘What is going on?’ My feet took me to the door, and then I opened it.
