《Hello, Inside Monster》CHAPTER XXXV: AND YET, WHO ARE WE?

„Is it better now?” DooSan asked SolHi while both are standing next to the parked car, somewhere at the entrance in the park.
„Mmm. It’s better,” SolHi murmured, looking in the distance.
Actually, the upset in her soul hadn't passed. She had only calmed down a little bit after minutes in a row of crying in DooSan’s arms and this was strange for her because even if she considered him „an enemy,” the one from whom she should have run because he could destroy her, in the end, she felt calm and somehow protected next to him and this was hurting her more.
Yes, this hurt her a lot because she would have liked to meet him in other circumstances, in better times when she was just a simple country girl who just had come to the capital city, looking for a better future in the huge town. Maybe if she would have met him then she wouldn’t have passed through everything that she suffered 7-years-ago. But that „maybe” was just a „maybe” and, in the end…”
„SolHi, who are we for each other, in the end?” she heard DooSan’s voice that awoke her from her daydream because she definitely looked at that moment as if thoughts were taking completely over her.
Without watching him, SolHi answered: „I don’t know. Friends maybe or enemies?! I can’t figure it out.”
„Why? Because of what happened 7-years-ago?”
„Does it seem unimportant for you or too little? We hurt each other in all manners of ways and we’d tried to kneel the other. These are scars that won’t ever disappear, DooSan. Yes, the wounds healed, in time, but they still hurt. Damn, they still hurt.”
DooSan kept silent: she was right - they hurt each other so much. Actually, he hurt her more than SolHi hurt him and he did this because he was blinded by his pain and because he was looking for a guilty person for what happened because the night YuSan died he tried to talk to DooSan, but he was too upset on his brother and didn’t answer the phone. More than this: he turned off the phone and stood for hours in the bar of his father’s best friend, trying to figure out why fate was so cruel with him: only a few days before his death, YuSan accused DooSan of having an affair with his fiancée and all this after his girlfriend’s confession about her love for DooSan. Then, he found out about YuSan’s sudden death and DooSan started to blame himself that his brother died without knowing the truth - he never slept with the famous fiancée. She just tried to take advantage of him, one night when he came home drunk, but despite the fact that she insisted that something had happened between them, DooSan was sure that it wasn’t true.
„DooSan, do you think that someday will we have the power to pass by the other one without feeling this hate in our soul?” SolHi asked, taking DooSan by surprise.
He watched her for a while, in silence because he didn’t know how to tell her that in fact, he doesn’t hate her. For some reason, he didn’t hate her anymore as happened before starting to work together and had known her better. Then: he found out about the child she had lost that night and he felt the same as her - a huge emptiness in his soul as if that child was also his, but he was sure that it wasn’t real. Or maybe … suddenly, he remembered fragments of a night when the two made love, in a motel room, but … it wasn’t real. It couldn’t be. He was sure that the first time he saw SolHi was when the paramedics took her out of that abandoned warehouse, wounded, unconscious, and considered being the murderer of his brother.

Then, the images started to be even clearer, confusing DooSan who saw himself forced to close his eyes, trying to figure out what’s real and what’s not, but the image of them passionately kissing was so clear that made him feel dizzy and not to fall, DooSan supported his hand on the hood. „It can’t be,” he whispered, unwillingly. „It definitely can’t be.”
„What exactly?” SolHi asked.
Her question made him watch her confused: „You and me… did we meet each other before the night when you and YuSan…”
„No, and I’m sure about this.”
„But …,” DooSan kept silent, however. He didn’t know how to tell her that at that moment he was seeing fragments from a night spent together in a motel room, making love and that he wasn’t hating her, as she wasn’t hating him. And … it was impossible that he had just imagined all this. It was too much. It was too… weird. „Who’s your child’s father, SolHi?” DooSan asked, eventually, without even watching her.
„Ia, Han DooSan, we aren’t that close for such questions. We aren’t friends, even. So, this question is something that I won’t answer. I take the rest of the day off. Consider that I informed you!” and she just left him there, without even watching back.
DooSan watched behind her, for minutes in a row, waiting for her to turn and to watch him, but SolHi just walked away, sure about herself and this hurt him and he didn’t even know why he felt upset for her indifference. Then, he closed again his eyes and remembered once again those moments with them on the bed, making love, in an unfamiliar motel room and … for the first time, he felt their kiss so well and … he was sure that he didn’t imagine all these: he was sure that they met before, even if SolHi didn’t remember this or maybe she was just lying to him, but DooSan was convinced to find out this truth too as he was convinced to find out who was Un’s father.
***
„Damn, April weather,” DooSan mumbled while running through the rain from the parking car, left in the street, toward the stairs that were leading at the floor on which SolHi was living. „And I’m sure that they didn’t announce rain today. And yet, the sky is mad even if is night.”
Getting to the fourth floor, he quickly shook the raindrops from off his coat and hair, but even if he was concentrated not to let raindrops on him, he spotted that SolHi was in front of the apartment, changing the password of the electronic lock. „You must be kidding me. Ia, Ian SolHi, are you now trying to…”
SolHi instead just glanced at him and, grinning with irony, she just closed the door behind her.
„Huh, does she think that I won’t enter or what?” DooSan mumbled and ran to the door, but … he found it impossible to open it. „Damn lock!”
„I also think so,” SolHi said, being next to the door. „As I thought that I was clear enough when I told you that for you, I’m detective Ian only and that I want you out of my apartment, today. But I see that you thought that I’m just a clown that was trying to make fun of you.”
„Then, you want to play from what I see, detective Ian! Well, detective Ian, let me inform you or remind you that I’m a real monster if someone tries to piss me off. And you… are just a cobra! You have no heart, let me tell you this: if you had one you wouldn't have left a poor man like me, standing outside when it is pouring. ”

„Are you trying now begging some mercy?”
„Yeah, but you definitely don’t know what is this.”
„Why so?! From what I remember you aren’t right now in the street or wet. More than that: you have your apartment - you can turn back there. From what I remember is a nice place, warm and luxurious. It can’t be compared with my humble hovel. If you are afraid about your things, don’t worry: I’ll send them well packed and in very good condition. And … I swear: there won’t be anything left behind.”
„Huh, now I got it: you are trying to make me vamoose! Well, SolHi, my dear roommate: sit down and wait! I assure you that I won’t move from here! Anyway, you will leave that apartment at some moment. And then, you’ll meet the real Han DooSan.”
Upset, DooSan buttoned his coat up and sat down next to the door, chattering and shriveling, staring furiously at the rain and at the wind that was getting head. „She definitely has no heart. Not for nothing, I called her once „witch,” but I won’t leave. Even if I must stay here all night long… outside … on this cold as if I’m in a damn deep-freezer. If you find me tomorrow frozen, like a Polar penguin then you’ll be the responsible one, Ian SolHi and you’ll remember for me your entire life.”
„Yeah, as if I have nothing better to do,” SolHi answered, ironically.
„So, asking for pity doesn’t work with her. Then, Han DooSan, you must act,” he said and, kneeling in front of the door, rubbed his palms, staring at the electric lock. „What was that code: 1405… error, 7865… error, 26121… error. Ah, damn you … code! Ia, Ian SolHi, what code did you use?”
„And do you think that I’m that idiot to tell it to you after I changed it?”
„At list a hint!” he begged.
„If you are so decided, then… use your brain. Maybe you’ll guess it, till you’ll be definitely old. I’m going to bed. So: wish you luck!”
„Huh, thanks for the hint: it meant that it’s something difficult to find out. For sure you didn’t use something that I can easily guess! But … if I guess it and enter, you’ll listen to something nice from me, SolHi.”
SolHi nodded in reproach and moved away from the door. DooSan’s mumbles were still heard while he was trying to open the door by guessing the code. But… he didn’t make it. In the end, he sat down again next to the door, yelling: „all right then, you won! You found a damn good code, but I’m still here and I’m not leaving! If I am found tomorrow morning looking like a polar mummy, then they for sure will accuse you of killing me and for not showing mercy to me. Maybe then you’ll cry for me. At least, a little bit.”
SolHi, who was just coming from the kitchen with a teacup in her hand, looked at the door, frowning: „does he think that I’m Mother Teresa or what?! He found the man who’ll cry for him. Yeah, right!” Then, she approached the bed, sat down on the floor next to it where was her laptop too, and focused on work.
One hour later, SolHi looked at the clock: 23.00. Outside was heavy rain and the raindrops were hardly tapping on the window, making the bad weather be felt so well even inside a warm room. DooSan’s voice wasn’t heard for about an hour already and this amazed SolHi. „Did he finally leave?! I don’t think so. As I know him, he’s probably still there. He’s not a man that gives up so easily. Ia, Han DooSan are you still there?” but she received no answer from him. „So, we are playing „quiet mouse then, huh?!”
She stood up and approached the door, listening to some noise made by DooSan from outside, but only the rain was heard. Then, she opened the door, just a little bit, and saw DooSan, sitting in the same place, squeezing the knees at his chest, trying to warm up this way, but it wasn’t working because SolHi saw him shivering and shaking like hell and he didn’t even look at SolHi, playing the tough guy with her.
SolHi deeply breathed in and opened completely the door, staring at him while grimacing. Only then, he had glanced at her as if he was a poor, offended puppy. „What?” she asked.
„I want inside. It’s cold,” he murmured, pretending to be about to cry and begging for her mercy.
SolHi only nodded in reproach and entered the apartment, leaving the door half-opened. This made DooSan grin with pleasure. Then, he stood up and also entered. Till SolHi spotted what he was doing, DooSan quickly changed the password and grinned satisfied at SolHi, who was staring furiously at him. „When did you manage to save your fingerprint?”
„Right from the first night, but… I never thought to do something else too, not to be left outside.”
„Something else? Like?”
„Come here and I’ll show you!” SolHi looked at him, insistently, feeling that DooSan was planning something against her, but even so, she fell into his trap because, approaching the door, DooSan grabbed her hand and, forcing with her, he managed to delete her fingerprint and again changed the password. „Now it’s everything just fine,” he murmured satisfied, and moved away from the door, wrapping himself with the blanket he found on the bed.
Yet, next to the door, SolHi looked at him, upset. „Did someone tell you that you are shameless? I can’t believe this: if you agree to carry the calf, they'll make you carry the cow. Ia, Han DooSan, I’m talking to you right now.”
„What? I’m also living here. You should have thought about this before letting me outside. At cold.”
„It seems that you never heard that these locks can be also changed.”
„Just try it and I assure you that you’ll be forced to move to my house and from there … you definitely won’t escape from me.”
„To your house?! Me?”
„Yeah, and that will be your punishment. So, don’t provoke me, Ian SolHi. You’ll never win in front of me.”
„Uh, let it be. What is the password? The new one, I mean.”
„Aaa, the password?! The day when we first met.”
„You now… you changed the password, from my door, and put the date when Han YuSan and I…”
DooSan stared at her in reproach. „Do you think I’m crazy? I mean, the date when we saw each other, again.”
„You definitely lost your head. It’s probably for being frozen, you, damn polar penguin,” she said, entering the bathroom and slamming the door.
„At least serve me a tea!” DooSan yelled at her, sneezing.
SolHi instead opened the door and slammed it again, a sign that DooSan pissed her off.
„Right! Who did lose the sac with mercy to find SolHi some? Nobody! I’ll rather warm up inside of a deep freezer, at minus 50 degrees than SolHi to show some mercy on me,” and he again sneezed, this time so hard that his ears started to buzz.
***
DooSan, laying on the bed and completely wrapped with the blanket, lurked at SolHi, who was sitting on the floor, next to the bed, staring at the screen of her laptop, but it was clear enough that she was thinking at something else and not at what was seen on the screen.
Taking advantage of her absence of mind, DooSan wrapped the blanket closer to his body and, crawling on the elbows, approached her and stretched his neck, trying to sip from SolHi’s tea.
Catching his movement, SolHi moved a little bit the teacup from him, making DooSan reach over her shoulder, but the cup was too far and to reach it he should have left the bed - a bad idea for him. So, he just looked at her, with his puppy eyes, begging for mercy: „I’m ill. You should take the responsibility for letting me outside and that I caught a cold. I think I have also a fever. Just touch my forehead and you’ll…”
SolHi gave him her tea and this made him smile, happy with his victory. Then, she headed toward the kitchen, mumbling: „worse than a little child. And … anyway, what are you doing in my bed? Yours is the sofa.”
„The sofa? Since when? From what I know who bought the bed is me. Today. So, it’s mine.”
„And … who should sleep on the sofa? Me?”
„You can also sleep on the bed if you want. I don’t bite.”
„Aha. Dream about it!” and she sat down again, throwing fire arrows toward DooSan, with her glance, seeing him grinning satisfied. „Stop it!”
„Why so? At least to enjoy my victory.”
„Really? And… who told you that it was a victory? You didn't get sleep in the bed. You can anytime sleep outside.”
„You can’t chase me away, anyway. I know the password.”
„Traitor!” Then, she again turned on the video she was watching. „By the way, did you know that Park Yu Ra left the hospital?”
„Mmm. Detective Kan told me this by phone, a few moments later after you left me in the park. Why?”
„Because it’s damn interesting who helped her to leave the hospital.”
Turning the screen toward DooSan, she turned off the video at the image with Yu Ra’s face and with her was the same man with whom SolHi fought and this made DooSan stare at the screen like an idiot.
„You must be kidding me now,” DooSan mumbled.
„Nope. I’m very serious, by the by. Especially after finding out that Park Yu Ra is just a ghost: she died a year ago,” and this time who grinned was SolHi.
„Ya, SolHi, I understand the fact that you and Yu SuJin, from time to time, beat around the bush, especially knowing that you two found this video after „entering legally” in the cache of the National Data Program, but … I saw that ghost, ok? Actually, you also saw her, in her apartment, when she’d been stabbed. She’s damn alive.”
„Tell this her parents. A year ago, Park Yu Ra was buried in her hometown, and who took care of her funeral were her parents.”
„Ok, let’s say that what you say is true: how then could she have used her documents? Her passport and the rest?! Her documents must be unexecuted now and deleted from…”
„Well, how she managed to keep her documents when everybody was considering her death - I don't know, but … what I could find out is that there are two registers: one in which Park Yu Ra’s name figures as of a dead person and the second one - where she asked for new documents, declaring that she burned her hands at the job and she had no more fingerprints. This way, her passport was useless.”
„An accident? What kind of accident could have…”?
„I don’t know. We must find out this … well, if we see her again, of course.”
„This is obvious, but … wait, are you suggesting that the girl we saved isn’t Park Yu Ra?”
„Not only me is thinking so. SuJin tried to check her data, but he found it impossible because when she did new documents she left instead of her fingerprints, a new way of checking the info: the retinal scanning and this is…”
„SF.”
„No. A damn good method of not being identified if something happens because in our country this method of checking the people isn’t that much developed. So, she can kill, kidnap someone or steal without being afraid of being found.”
„Smart.”
„I must agree.”
„Then? How do we find her?”
„Unearthing her,” DooSan looked at her, thunderstruck.
„Unearthing her? Whose?”
„Park Yu Ra. Only this way we can find out who was really buried one year ago. More than this: checking Kim Ha Na’s photos, on her social media, I saw that they didn’t see each other for about 10 years. Till two months ago, when Ha Na published this photo,” and DooSan stared at the photo where Yu Ra and Ha Na were happily smiling and under which was written: „sweet reunion.”
„Owing to the fact that they didn’t see for ten years, the fake Park Yu Ra could have said anything about her facial changes.”
„Exactly.”
„But, SolHi: no matter how one hasn't changed during years or even if she would have done plastic surgery, there are still memories left, which one can’t forget that easily. What if Park Yu Ra is real and she only framed up her death?”
„Are you talking about what Dja Iun said?”
„Yeah. If it’s true that her boyfriend was owing a lot of money and he was unable to pay those debts… let’s say that I don't think she’s that stupid just to wait for being forced to pay in his place. Why does not pay someone else for their sins?”
„DooSan, I think that SF is what you are saying now. They are just kids: they don’t have more than 25. To kill someone for…”
„SolHi, listen to me: that man had tens of thousands of euros as debts and he paid everything in one single day. This is what I consider damn suspect.”
„The date when Park Yu Ra was declared dead,” SolHi murmured. „But… how to find out if…”
„Let’s exhume her body and ask for a DNA test. I don’t think that Yu Ra’s parents will be against it if this means finding out that not their child is buried in that grave, where they cried a lot of bitter tears.”
„I hope that you’re right, DooSan. If not: the killed one will be us,” but even so, SolHi was thinking that made sense what DooSan said because there were too many coincidences without a logical answer.
***
SolHi sits with her arms across her breast, watching at the excavator that was digging the grave for the exhumation.
A few moments later, DooSan approached her after coming out of his car, parked not that far from her. „Did they start a long time ago to dig?” he asked.
„For about a half an hour. They are about to finish. We delayed because of Yu Ra’s mother: she collapsed finding out that we are trying to unearth her daughter’s body and I think that she lost her mind too because of pain. At first, they’ve agreed to our request, but, seeing the excavator, she had another crisis. Your friend, the doll lover barely managed to calm her down.”
DooSan stared at her, knitting his brows. „I know that you don’t fall for GhiYon, but calling him a doll lover it’s too much even for you, SolHi.”
„Yeah, yeah, defend your friend, but I won’t change my mind. He deserved it.”
„Have it your own way. By the way, how’s your shoulder?”
„Better. The doctor said that the splint isn’t necessary anymore. I have pills if hurts.”
„Again painkillers?!” DooSan said, with irony, but seeing SolHi’s piercing glance, he changed the subject. „Let’s go! It seems that they finished. I see the coffin.”
They approached the open grave, next to which Yu Ra’s mother was inconsolably crying, in her husband’s arms, both kneeled.
DooSan spotted SolHi watching at the crying woman with sad eyes and for a moment remembered the moment when she also cried in his arms, a day ago and also because of losing a child. „Let’s go to the forensic tent. GhiYon is waiting for us,” and to force her move, he slowly pushed her from behind.
Approaching GhiYon, who just finished the first check of the body and have exited to meet them, DooSan and SolHi stared in amazement at the paper that the forensic doctor was waving in front of them.
„What’s that?” DooSan asked, with curiosity.
„I must ask you the same, prosecutor Han DooSan,” GhiYon said ironically and released the sheet of paper that DooSan was trying to take from his hand.
„An autopsy report! What’s wrong with this report? From what I see she died in a car accident, after hardly hitting the wheel with the chest what provoked a heart attack.”
„And since when we can find axes on the wheels? By the way, the wound of ax is on the back of her head and not in front to say that she hit it in the accident.” GhiYon hissed the words so hard that made his interlocutors stare at him like idiots.
„Wait a minute, GhiYon. What are you talking about? Since when a murder is considered a traffic accident?”
„Ask this the forensic doctor who signed this paper and… this kid didn’t die in a car accident, DooSan. Even if there’s more than a year since she’d been buried it’s clear that she’d been targeted by organ traffickers. The only organ left: is her heart.”
SolHi shuddered, forcing DooSan to support her by grabbing her by arms, and this amazed even GhiYon who had never expected such a reaction from a „criminal” as he always considered SolHi. „Did Park Yu Ra die because her boyfriend sold her to…” SolHi stammered.
„Absolutely not!” they heard Kan’s voice behind them. After approaching them, Kan showed them a photo of Yu Ra with her parents: „She’s the same girl we saved when she’d been „stabbed.” More than this: I talked to the doctor who made the surgery and told me that the wound wasn’t made by someone else, but by herself.”
„Huh,” GhiYon whispered. „It seems that from looking for a missing girl you got to a cold blood murder, guys. Congratulations! You are damn good for finding trouble.”
„Tell me something new?! And here are more than troubles: we are talking about a criminal organization and this means that we can’t deal alone with this, guys! I must make a phone call! GhiYon, „the body” goes with you for a detailed autopsy.”
„I don’t think that her family will accept this…” Kan murmured.
„Then… force them because the photo you showed us demonstrates that this body isn’t Park Yu Ra’s body. Thus: they have no right to it. SolHi, take Yu Ra’s parent's statement! For sure I won’t bury this case that easily and I don’t care who’s against this!” and he turned his back to them, dialing a number.
„Let’s talk to Park Yu Ra’s parents, SolHi and we’ll need nerves of steel for this,” Kan mumbled and left SolHi and GhiYon alone.
Left alone, SolHi and GhiYon stared at each other for a few moments. Then, he said, avoiding her glance: „listen, detective Ian, I…”
„You did what you should have done, doctor Park! If Han YuSan was my best friend and I would have thought that you are an assassin, I would have done the same. Maybe. But… I still think that you go too far on speculating: saying that I’m crazy and that „I feel the same as YuSan before his death,” is too much, even for you. I’m sure that what I remember is real and not an illusion or YuSan’s feelings because … well, as DooSan already knows this I don’t think that’ll be a problem to tell you too: the pain I feel each time I have an attack are really ghost pain, but they are caused by the memories I have related to the loss of my baby. That night, when Han YuSan died, I lost my baby, doctor! I lost my baby after being brutally kicked in the belly for … I don’t know the number of times that monster kicked me, as I don’t know who did this because the only people, I remember being in that warehouse are me and YuSan.
„Listen, Detective Ian, accusing YuSan that…”
„Why not? If I really killed him, it means we were the only one there, where I lost a child when an unknown man kicked me over and over again …till I lost my baby. If I killed him, it was in self-defense and even if you open a new case you’ll lose because I won’t be quiet this time. But… if I didn’t kill Han YuSan and, he wasn’t who killed my baby…”
„…there was someone else there. A third one, whose face you don’t remember.”
„Exactly. And … how our objectives coincide now I consider a good idea to investigate this subject together. Of course: Han DooSan will be involved or at least will know about this because I don’t want to hide. Not this time. Think about this and if you decide something, call me. DooSan has my number.” SolHi turned her back to him and approached Kan and Yu Ra’s parents, who had a heated conversation.
GhiYon watched behind her for a while. Then, he looked at DooSan who was still talking by phone and wasn’t seeing him. „Did I am wrong in this?” GhiYon wondered in a whisper. „YuSan, friend, I’m sure that you didn’t hurt her. Then, what the hell did you do that night in that warehouse? And … what the hell nobody knew that you went there?”
„Doctor Park, look! Here,” and this forced GhiYon to turn back to work, while around them was a very tensioned atmosphere, especially with Yu Ra’s mother’s loud crying, heard all around while they were heading toward Kan's car.
