《Hello, Inside Monster》CHAPTER XXIV: ANTHILL

While the car leaves behind it other cars and buildings, SolHi’s eyes are looking in front, but nothing is seen by her as if her body was stuck in place, but her mind was out of service.

“Are you ok ?” Yu asked her in the end, seeing that she’s totally out of reality.

“What? Aaa, yes, inspector. Don’t worry. It’s just … a kind of feeling I didn’t have for a long time already, but now it’s back.”

“Feeling? What kind of feeling?”

“That I can’t breathe. I had it while being in jail, but I managed to “chase” it away with Mina’s help, but now it’s worse than it was in jail.”

“Why so? You are free now. You can be wherever you want and do whatever you want. More than that: I know that you love roofs. There is a lot of fresh air there.”

SolHi smiled, but she felt so sad inside because even if she loves roofs and it gives her certain confidence, she doesn’t feel alive there. She just tries to be as far as possible from the others, climbing on those roofs, only when she feels worse than ever.

After she left the hospital, 6 years ago, her real nightmare began and it was closely related to the psychological sessions she had with Mina because it brought in her life a continuous agony and she loses herself every time she remembers something about her past.

“You know, inspector, not everything that shines is gold, and not all the open spaces mean freedom for one. At least it doesn’t happen to me.”

“Why not? Well, I know that the fact that you had been charged for a murder brought in your life a lot of shits, but you must now forget it while you are out, because it’s your life and you must live it as you want.”

“I tried, but that’s not as easy as it looks like.”

“Why so?”

“Because even if I can forget it, the world won’t forget it. And this is a law of nature because for every crime someone needs a culprit and in the case of the prosecutor Han YuSan there isn’t another one. Even if I was set free it was for lack of evidence and not because I demonstrated my innocence.”

“But still, even so, you are free and you must work for it. I mean you must work to find the real criminal.”

“And … what if I was the one who killed him?”

“Then you’ll pay for it, but at least you’ll know that all the insults, all the bad words told you are deserved and not just something you must accept as a cause of your amnesia.”

“You are also right, but I’m still afraid.”

“Of what?”

“Of my promise.”

“Promise? What kind of promise?”

SolHi this time kept silent. She couldn’t tell the inspector that she promised DooSan that if she discovers that she’s guilty then she’ll kill herself, giving him this way the possibility to get revenge.

The city is still running in the opposite direction of the car, but for SolHi this run is similar to a back in the time jump, but her mind is so stubborn and continues to cling to the present as if remembering the past is something forbidden for her or deadly, and keeping her in the present is like saving her life.

Grabbing the back of the coat of So Jun, inspector Yu takes the young man out of the club and forces him to approach SolHi, who is waiting for them not that far from the entrance, while reading one more time the message she got from Cha Yoon while she and inspector Yu were going back to the Prosecution: “detective Ian, this is Cha Yoon. I remembered the name of that guy: Kan So Jun. Usually, he can be found in this nightclub…”

“Ya, Ya, what’s wrong with you, man? Why are you so aggressive? What the fuck did I do to you?” but he keeps silent when SolHi shows her ID.

“I’m detective Ian SolHi, from Seoul Prosecution. He’s inspector Yu DoJin. And I suppose you are Kan So Jun, right?”

“Yeah, it’s me. But I don’t understand the point: why are the police after me? From what I remember I didn’t do anything wrong in the club to be called the police here.”

“Because you did something wrong, but not in the club and we aren’t just simply “the police”. We are detectives, and generally detectives investigate crimes.”

“Crimes? What the fuck are you talking about?”

Yu slaps the young man’s back of the head, forcing him to keep silent and to stare unhappily at him. “Talk nicely with the lady if you don’t want to spend some time in jail.”

“With the lady? And who's the lady here?” and So Jun emphasized the words trying this way to offend Yu, but catching SolHi’s furious glance he changed the tactics. “And, who am I supposed to have killed or injured?”

“I like the fact you are smart. It means it will be easy to find out the truth. So, tell me about Han So Ra.”

“Han So Ra? And, who is she?”

“The girl you met on the 25th of January and from what we know you had a lot of fun with a minor,” and Yu took a few steps toward the young man, forcing him to crawl with his back toward the wall. “So, did you remember or, don’t tell me, that it was too long ago and your fucking fried brain can’t remember this?”

“Well, it was my intention at first, but … I know who you are talking about. The dwarf.”

SolHi stared furiously at the young man, hearing the word “dwarf” and she was about to kick So Jun when Yu stepped in front of her. “Sombe, let me show this man what dwarves can do. I hate when someone calls short girls like this.”

“I’m sure he didn’t mean anything wrong. It was just a saying.”

“Just a saying, sombe? Should I remind you about the last person who called me “dwarf” and what happened to him?”

“Not necessary: I was there too. So, step back. No need to heat the atmosphere here. So, giraffe, tell me about the girl.”

So Jun grimaced at Yu, hearing how he called him “giraffe.”

“What? Do you dislike it? Or maybe should I invent something else for you? Not for nothing, but I learned it from you: insulting people by using “words”.”

“So, where exactly you and So Ra went on the night of the 25th?” insisted SolHi.

“We came here, but when I heard that she's a minor I sent her to hell. Not for nothing, but … I prefer an adult woman. You know what I mean,” and he made a gesture, outlining the appetizing shapes of a woman.

“Are you sure we are talking about the same data? From what we know on the 25th you and So Ra met to go to the cinema, not to a nightclub.”

“Listen, Detective Ian, do I look like one who wastes his time going to the cinema with a girl?” and he took a step toward SolHi, trying to show his position, but when he noticed Yu touching his fists as if preparing for a fight, the young man moved back. “I guess not. You two look too old to know this.”

“And I am so proud of this. Do you know why? Because in my time when you invited a girl to go out with you it was for knowing her better, not for dragging her in your bed.”

“Times changed, inspector. A real man nowadays starts his relationships in the bed first and later … if there’s a later time, then maybe he starts something more serious.”

This answer of So Jun made SolHi laugh so loudly, that the passer buys and the bodyguards from the entrance in the club stared at her as if they saw a mad person who ran from the lunatic asylum.

“More serious, you say? Well, guy, you are something if you believe in such shit. And, do you know why? Because all the “free relationships” end after a “hot night”. Trust me - I know what I’m talking about. But you didn’t answer my question: where did you leave her after finding out that she’s a minor?”

“Right here in front of the club and if you don't believe me, you can talk to those guys. They were here that night too” and the young man looked from above at the two detectives.

Entering the office, SolHi threw her notepad on the desk making DooSan wince, who was so focused on analyzing a file that he didn’t notice her entering.

“Bad news, huh?” he asked Yu when the inspector entered after SolHi, but instead of a loud answer, DooSan saw only nodding in approval.

“Well, I don’t understand where exactly we got lost. This case seems to be even more “stinky” than we first thought.”

“Why do you think so, SolHi? Only because that guy, Kan So Jun, left her in the middle of the street at midnight?” Kan asked her and she grimaced unhappily while watching him. “Yeh, yeh, I know you love me too. What did the bodyguards tell you?”

“The same as Kan So Jun: he asked So Ra for the ID … she started to stutter that she forgot it, that she doesn’t know where she left it, so they sent her back home and “our guy” spent that night with a red hair.”

“At least he had some fun. But we still have a chance: I sent Yoon Suk to take all the records from the surveillance cameras in the area. Maybe we can see something.”

“Wait a minute,” Yu said, which made everyone look at him with interest. “One of the bodyguards said that So Ra entered a car after being left in the middle of the street by So Jun and that it seemed she knew those who were in that car.”

“Yes, he said, but I don’t catch the point, sombe.”

“If we can see on the video the faces of those guys maybe we can find a trace toward the reason for her death.”

“I don’t think it will be that easy, inspector,” DooSan said. “Don’t forget that she could just ask them to give her a ride and nothing more.”

“In the middle of the night? With three guys in the car and only one girl? Prosecutor Han, don’t tell me you never dated a woman,” SolHi told him ironically. “Nobody nowadays enters a car with a lot of men in it, only if you are that stupid to not know how it can be over. A normal girl takes a taxi to go home.”

“SolHi is right,” A Rim said this time. “You enter a man’s car during the night only if he’s gay, your brother or your boyfriend.”

“Bingo!” Yoon Suk yelled while entering, and he put in front of Kan a lot of USB memories.

“And … what is this?” Kan wondered loudly.

“Our work for an entire night, boss. I hope you brought some fresh underwear. Otherwise, you’ll stink in the morning,” and, smiling, Yoon Suk grabbed with his hand a few USBs and approached his desk.

Kan grimaced unhappily. “I thought that at least today I’ll sleep at home. But thanks to someone, that dream is gone.”

“Don’t worry, sombe. I’m sure that your “bed” we’ll wait for you till next time you’ll be free,” SolHi teased him and winked at him after taking some “work” for her.

***

The next morning was worse than the night because even if everybody worked hard, they couldn’t find any evidence.

Finishing to watch the last video from the USB he had in front of him, Kan threw it in the middle of the office. “That’s useless. There’s nothing that can be used in a trial and most of the videos are blurred, because of the rain.”

“What hour did Cha Yoon tell us that So Ra turned back home?” Yu asked SolHi.

“About four in the morning. She said that So Ra’s clothes were wet, broken, and full of blood. And as an explanation So Ra told her friend that she and Kan So Jun saved a cat after she had been hit by a car.”

“What a good Samaritan,” DooSan joked. “He saved a cat but left the poor girl right in the middle of the street. I wish there would be a law to punish for this too.”

“Stay in line, prosecutor. There are many other things the law should change for and one of these is that our boss forced us to work all night without even feeding us,” SolHi attacked him.

“What about a fight between Kan So Jun and Han So Ra?” Yoon Suk said and everyone, as per order, turned toward him, while he turned the screen of his computer toward them showing them how So Ra slapped So Jun and after that, they started to push each other. “And … this is not all. I have this too,” the young detective said, and, changing the images, he showed them a photo where the face of the driver is seen, even if it’s blurred.

As if something caught DooSan’s attention, he approached the screen and watched it for a while. “Detective Ian, look at this. Doesn’t this guy seem familiar to you?”

“For me? Why should I know… wait a minute,” SolHi said, seeing the driver’s face? “That guy is Cha Yoon’s boyfriend. We saw him in the school when we went for Cha Yoon to the medical office.”

“His name is So Min Ho. A senior of the school. I checked his record because he seemed suspicious to me and I was right: he has some antecedents for violence and hooliganism.”

“And, do you think he is our guy, prosecutor?” Kan asked while pouring some coffee in his cup and yawning sweetly.

“Bring him here. I think we can find out more if we press him a little bit. Yoon Suk, detective Kan, he’s your guy. So, be that kind to ask him to make us a visit.”

“Right now? When I was about to drink some coffee?” Kan said in mockery.

DooSan instead smiled. “I’ll keep it warm for you,” and, taking Kan’s cup of coffee, he took a sip from it, while everybody started to laugh.

***

Min Ho was fooling around with one of his colleagues when Kan and Yoon Suk entered the class, but none of the students were paying attention to them.

Because of the noise made by the guys, Kan’s voice wasn't heard when he asked who is So Min Ho, so he had been forced to throw a chair on the floor to make the others listen to him.

“So, now that we can talk like normal people, will you be that kind to tell me who So Min Ho is?” but while staring at each face in the class, Kan noticed how a young man was crawling toward the second exiting door. “Yoon Suk, I think I caught him,” Kan said, but the detective didn’t manage to run toward Min Ho when the guy pushed a desk in front of the detective and he ran away.

Behind them, everybody in the school was gathering in one place, wondering about what was happening, but most of them were hurt or thrown to the floor, being pushed away from his way by Min Ho, who later started to run down the stairs.

“Yoon Suk, why is everybody running? Do I look that scary?”

“Nice that you mentioned this, but it isn't the right time and nor the place, sombe,” the young detective mumbled and he was the first to exit the building after Min Ho.

In the yard it is even harder because there are a lot of stairs, hidden places, bushes and students gathered in groups, which makes the run difficult. But still, so, Min Ho moves through them so skillfully that one can think that he’s an athlete with a very good record of winnings.

However, when to take left toward the exiting gate from the school, there is an abrupt stair, about which Min Ho seems to have forgotten, that when he looked behind to see where the detectives are he stumbled on the first stair and he rolled down till he hit hard the ground at the bottom of stairs, but he didn’t manage to stand up and to run, because Yoon Suk showed up from nowhere next to him and cuffed him.

“So, running bunny, now it’s my turn. You are now in my hands and from here you don’t go anywhere.”

“What do you want from me?” Min Ho finally yelled at Yoon Suk, but a hit of Kan over his ankle made him lose balance and kneel. Staring up, Min Ho saw Kan’s killing glance, because he had been forced to run after the young man.

“Did you ask why you were detained by the police? Well, first answer my question and maybe I’ll be that kind to answer yours. Why did you run?”

“Because is it fun?!” Min Ho answered while smiling satisfied.

“Yeah, and I’m Santa Claus. No, guy, you ran, because you are guilty of what you did to Kan So Ra. But lucky us for grabbing you, because you’ll spend a long time in jail, buddy.”

Kan grabbed Min Ho with one arm and Yoon Suk with another, forcing the young man to stand up and move away.

While going toward the exiting gate, Min Ho caught Cha Yoon’s eyes staring with fear at him, while tears were flowing on her cheeks, but none of them said or did anything, knowing that was the end of them together.
