《Divine Mortality》Chapter 51

Eseli: “One more cake slice please!”

MC: “Coming right up…”

Eseli: “Much appreciated Amulet, cake is such a truly delightful delicacy. Oh, and tell me, how come we are in combat with such a powerful enemy?”

Don’t start questioning the situation we are in now! In the past past 30 minutes or so you have been as quiet as a house cat to this situation…well yeah, I guess so…anyways, what the hell is up with this comedic timing? Come on and let’s end this conversation quickly so you can help start killing this guy!

MC: “We are currently under the employment of Duke Alan and the Queen of Orchard Hills to aid them in damaging Coldpass and slay the Ogre Captain”

Eseli: “I understand all that silly Dwelf. It seems that the grand assault is almost completion. However, what I don’t understand is why you and your allies have decided to assault the Ogre King?”

The OGRE KING?!? Is there even an enemy NPC called that? Are we really fighting the Ogre King…or is it some sort of mistake in Eseli’s speech?

How do I even respond to this now? What dialogue option should I pick…hurry…hurry!

MC: “We are feeling adventurous and capable of bringing such a foe down. Will you aid us?”

Eseli: “If you truly feel confident, then I must happily oblige. However, if the situation turns dire, you can expect my tail to turn immediately.”

MC: “Understood! Eseli, focus fire and damage the enemy as much as possible!”

While my back has been turned away from the fight while talking to Eseli, as soon as I turn to look back at what is occurring in our battle, I see my vision is blocked by a giant iron clad belly…oh crap the boss is charging at me!

*The Ogre King slams his right fist at Amulet, flinging Amulet to the other corner tumbling into Wise and Sprite*

Ouch…there goes over half of my health... this guy is no joke

Should I tell everyone how dire this situation is? Well it always has been dire, but it would it distract everyone if I alarm them by telling that we are fighting a Ogre King and not a Ogre Captain…? I guess I’ll try to quietly inform everyone about it.

MC: “Wise, how are we holding up?”

WiseMaster667: “Well we aren’t holding much right now, are we? Go help Sprite’s character stand up quickly before we’ll get overrun and lose our healer”

MC: “You are right I should’ve gone to help Sprite up first”

Sprite: “Don’t worry about myself, I have lost only a sliver of health from our collision”

WiseMaster667: “So is Eseli helping now?”

May: “Yeah she is”

Krafty: “You go teacher! Blast em away with your hellfire you used to cast on me all the time!”

May: “Why did you do (again) to make you’re NPC teacher to cast “Hellfire Strike” on you…?”

MC: “Guy’s that’s a story for another time…because I’ve got a better joke to tell”

May: “Hmmm?”

MC: “Wise or Sprite, do you either of you guys know if Coldpass has a king in lore or in game?”

WiseMaster667: “Well, Coldpass barely exists in lore aside it being a region. It’s one of the many loosely established features in the Overworld which have been designed specifically for Players like us to alter dynamically. So to answer you’re question…a king, No.”

May: “Is this really even a joke?”

MC: “Well not actually…”

Krafty: “We don’t have time for this!”

MC and May: “I don’t want to hear that form you!”

*The Ogre King begins to fling heavy stones rapidly at every character*

I should not be standing around for so long like this or else I really am going to get Amulet killed

Sprite: “I’m not sure about a king. But when I was along with Guildmaster FeeNix and others, they discussed with Duke Alan about this Invasion Quest, and I do remember them specifically mentioning something about- AH “Ward of Aetsior! The High God of Wind! Protect mine allies” -…something about stopping the ruler of Coldpass from expanding by defeating their captain…”

MC: “So that confirms that there must be another boss above the Ogre Captain…”

Sprite: “I believe so… yes!”

*Eseli churns large spheres of elemental fire energy with a rock cradled in the center, and as soon as the rock shakes, she releases the Hellfire Strike spell at the backside of the Ogre King*

WiseMaster667: “Seriously? My my my Amulet Pond! You keep surprising me… oh woah indeed…this situation is a lot more chaotic than I expected… but I enjoy this challenge!”

Krafty: “Wait what did WiseMaster just figure out? I’m concerned.”

May: “I think we’ve been around him long enough around this guy that we shouldn’t question and just continue what we’re doing Krafty…but I am also seriously curious! AMULET?”

Sprite: “Ah! I have figured it out as well, but can it really be true? My hands in the other world are feeling wobbly all the sudden in fear!

MC: “Guys don’t panic or anything, especially you Sprite…”

Krafty: “Oh I’m panicking alright!”

May: “Just don’t nerd!”

MC: “Basically…we accidentally picked a fight with the OGRE KING!”

I can’t see their faces in real life, aside from WiseMaster667, I bet the faces of Krafty and May and Sprite are in wide eyed realization like mine were when Eseli nonchalantly told me who we were fighting. I bet on this, no, I can really tell how they look like because all the sudden the breathing and voices I hear from their microphones all froze up into a silence where only the ambience and sound effects of the game could be heard.

Ogre King: “Despair petty scum! For you have invoked the wrath of the NEW GODS! Muhahahaha…”

The titanic figure, the size of around five Krafty’s stacked together, and in half thick gray iron armor from head to stomach is not the Ogre Captain that we were expecting. Instead, we must have skipped ahead past the Invasion Quest’s target and went straight to the heart of Coldpass, where we are probably now on top of this mound. Above us culminates dark thunderous clouds roaring and the ground of the hill constantly vibrating. In no way this is a fight against a boss character fit for level 30 characters!

Sprite: “Don’t do what he says! Do not fall for this wicked demons perversive commands! We must not faulter and stand strong as a bulwark to protect the rest of our allies from the terror we have invoked!”

Eseli: “Oh fish snappers! It seems I must start fighting seriously now…”

MC: “What are these two completely different reactions!?!”

Krafty: “Sprite, you’d make for an excellent AI companion!”

May: “Shut the hell up Krafty, what are you trying to say? But deary, Sprite, you are the true wordsmith and not me… keep it up.”

WiseMaster667: “Funny enough, Eseli is the AI character and not Sprite. I admire you’re passion Sprite.”

MC: “That is high praise coming from Wise, but do not accept it just yet because we really do need to stand strong against the Ogre King.”

Sprite: “I completely agree!”

Krafty: “Ah…that’s right…we’re fight the Ogre King…this will certainly won’t turn out bad”

May: “Didn’t you hear what Spritey said? This is your chance to finally grow up and be a man Krafty, without having to do that in real life”

Krafty: “Of course you’d say that when it’s convenient for you! Blah blah blah I’m not listening and not discriminating against us video gamerz!”

WiseMaster667: “It’s my turn to say it, but NOW is NOT the time!”

MC: “Hey, we’ve come this far into the fight and I doubt we will lose if we can continue doing exactly what we have already done”

Krafty: “Besides the times we got hurt”

MC: “Yup besides those times…”

Eseli: “I should not care take your entire battle Amulet, go on and fight as well dear companion!”

MC: “You heard her, let’s go!”

May: “Don’t lump us with what your companion wants out of you, unless you want me to bring up who is dealing the least amount of DPS (damage per second) in this fight…”

WiseMaster667: “I had my eyes on that statistic as well…”

Krafty continued to use his character’s agility to move around constantly the Ogre King, forcing his attention on to Krafty because of all the arrows that were being fired repeatedly at the Ogre King. Some of the arrows stuck into the skin openings of the Ogre King, primarily around the neck area and legs. For the remainder of the fight, Krafty barely suffered anymore injuries as he grew to learn the pattern of attacks from the Ogre King.

Similarly, so did all the party members, aside from Eseli and Sprite, managed to fully follow the flow of the battle. However, those two did not fall behind and continued to successfully combo their moves with the rest of the party. Sometimes Wise had to remind Sprite to move to the side as to not get hit by an incoming rock that was slung by the Ogre King, which had a particularly devastating wide radius of damage being dealt to anyone touched by the large debris. At similar moments, I had to physically move my character and push Eseli away from certain areas. Whether a rock was thrown at her as well or the Ogre King attempted to charge the character which continued to majorly scar his flesh with burning stones of her own. Something that kept surprising me is how Eseli during combat is almost unrecognizable from another Player due to the movements and actions of her character makes. Sometimes they appear arbitrary and other times she appears like she’s being played by a professional real-time-strategy computer gamer. Besides the uncommon, odd times when I had to push her away, the skill of her AI amazed me. And maybe the reason why she did not bother to move away from certain things is simply because Eseli is a reckless person who seems to be used to overpowering her weaker foes with her advanced magic.

Either way, I felt confident almost the whole time during our fight with the Ogre King because our party clicked very well. We simultaneously were all able to feel and read our movements and use that to our advantage. Maybe the Ogre King was a secret boss hidden away from the main event because he did not have any allies in this fight, so it was easy to focus fire one large target that was seemingly stuck in a ritual stone circle on top of a hill. That is not to say the fight was not tough, and there certainly were terrible moments where I thought our whole party could wipe in a series of dominos due to one person dying and causing the rest to follow suite.

Not only do I luckily have an awesome powerful AI companion who is willing to follow me around and aid me once in a while in important fights like this, but so did WiseMaster667. He has two favorite “types” of minions to summon, two spirit wolves that for some reason keep on growing a little larger each time I see them. And someone who I hesitate to call a minion, but Wise does it anyways, is his warrior-monk Hasgol. Who, I truly feel for, because I believe he is a character that has been summoned from another world called Sensasia or something, and he basically has a part time job as a butler for a smartass Player. If he was a real person and not just another non playable character in a video game, I wonder what his story would be from his perspective? Anyways, he is WiseMaster667’s favorite “minion” to summon because it’s an actual humanoid who is basically Wise’s version of Eseli, as Hasgol is able to communicate with Wise like I do with Eseli.

And finally, I think the person who was in constant danger throughout the whole fight (and I think enjoyed it a lot based off her vocal reactions), was May. The “Spear Maiden” according to Sprite, which May has adopted (un)officially as her title…even though in a normal circumstance the May I know does not care about “titles” in video games. But because May has an instant fondness for Sprite, and Sprite does too, I guess it’s some sort of womanly bond that I do not have any clue about. Anyways, what I do know is that May is going to force her little brother to pay for the costs of repairing the durability of her Apple Guard armor set. Her little brother, of course, is Krafty.

It is because Krafty in the end did get the treasures he longed for from this event. But I do not want to speak about such a tragedy right now. Simply because, due to unfortunate circumstances, Krafty is not going to be able to spend or see the rest of the chest full of gold coins he uncovered at the top of the hill mound…

Oh, I should probably stop rambling on about that stuff and instead answer your question clearly.

Yes, we certainly did kill the Ogre King ourselves!

Fate-fan, how come you missed the main event after you had been hyping me up the whole time in the past week to attend the Invasion Quest and kill the Ogre Captain? Well, as you should know already, we didn’t kill an Ogre Captain, but I hope a King will be satisfactory for you?

P.S

Why are you forcing me to write about my experiences fighting the Ogre King in a letter format?!?!? Why can’t I just talk to you in voice chat like we usually do? It’s not as if we are in the past where I need to actually send you a physical letter by mail in real life, you know? You literally appeared in front of me 20 minutes after our epic battle and are currently staring at Amulet Pond as I’m spending…what…10 minutes typing this out?

Come on…tell me what you are planning! Stop being so vague with me!
