《Divine Mortality》Chapter 25

I don’t have time to think about all these response options! I need to answer quickly before Orana thrusts that halberd weapon towards me.
MC: “Hold on Orana, it’s me, Amulet Pond!”
Orana: “Is that really you Amulet? Step into the candlelight, but slowly!”
MC: “Okay, I’m stepping up closer, but don’t stab me!”
Orana: “Oh it is you Amulet! Looks like I was aiming my weapon a bit too high above your height, teehee sorry!”
For what are you sorry for? “Sorry” for almost attacking me, or sorry for failing to aim your weapon directly at me?
MC: “Don’t worry, just don’t stab me.”
Orana: “I would never think of purposefully hurting you Amulet. Eseli, you can extinguish your magic now!”
I see Eseli walking out of the kitchen room with a reddish light in her hands quickly dimming before it disappeared. Orana has also casually placed her Halberd down- Wait! It’s Eseli! So, she was still here after all!
I’m pretty sure I already know the answer, but I’ll choose to ask this question anyways so they can explain it themselves.
MC: “Why did you attack me?”
Eseli: “Yes Orana, why did you wake me up? It was merely the Divine Spirit.”
Orana: “I’m sorry Amulet, I woke you up because I thought there was an intruder in my shop, it hasn’t happened before to me but in these places it’s never too safe to have your guard up. And Eseli, there you go on again! “Merely the Divine Spirit” you say…Whether there are many Divine Spirits or not, isn’t it amazing to see someone like them?”
Eseli: “It is certainly amazing for the likes of us, but from all the data I’ve gained from knowing Amulet the past day and meeting those two other Divine Spirits earlier today, it appears that all the Divine Spirits are not much different from us in personality. They aren’t perfect beings, and even if they were I believe our dear Amulet Pond would not wish to be displayed in such a way. Isn’t that right Amulet? If I was incorrect, please do correct me.”
Data? Two other Divine Spirits? Is she referring to Krafty and May? So, she knows that those two are Divine Spirits. I guess those two are the type to go around telling every NPC whenever they have an option that they are “a Divine Spirit!”. It must be easier to get through conversations that way as well, because when an average NPC realizes that you are one then your credibility for them increases. Since we are technically “divine” beings in this Overworld. But I swear, there probably must be bad moments to announce that you’re a Divine Spirit to the AI. So, I’m going to remain trying in keeping my identity (and my future powers) a secret from everyone whenever possible.

MC: “I’m surprised you’ve been learning a lot about Divine Spirits. But I must say that many Divine Spirits are very strange people compared to those of this world so it might be very difficult for you to compile an accurate understanding about most of us. As for the way to refer me as, I do not mind either way.”
This was a long and pretty interesting response, so I chose it. I think it’s also a bit meta, it breaks the dimension a little bit by tell the AI about us players.
Orana: “Alright then, I’ll try my best to treat you the same as I’ve would have anyways, even after learning something like…you are real being that has descended from the heavens and is suddenly at my little cake shop!”
Eseli: “Hmm, yes interesting indeed. Thank you for that information Amulet. As it had already appeared to obviously be so, it seems that there is much that we do not know or understand about you Divine Spirits. I’ll keep carefully continuing this rare field study experience. Ah, but do not worry about me or Orana knowing that you are a Divine Spirit. We have already discussed this topic among ourselves before we headed for rest tonight, that you would likely not wish for others to know that you are a Divine Spirit, so we shan’t spread this information carelessly.”
Oh right, I forgot that a lot of time has went by for them. Oh wait, I guess a lot of time has also went by for me as well.
MC: “Indeed I do not wish for more people knowing this secret of mine, thank you very much you two.”
Agh, my first alarm has already rang and now my second alarm is ringing. I guess I should get off from playing the game. I’ll end this conversation and log off.
MC: “I shall take my leave again”
Eseli: “Will you disappear once more into the aether?”
Orana: “The last time it really frightened me when I saw Amulet’s body turn into holy dust and vanish, so you’re saying it’ll happen again?”
MC: “Yes, I will return back to something like the heavens”
“Something like the heavens” really is a dialogue option for me to choose, and it doesn’t look to be a typo or a glitch? I guess the developers don’t want to bother explaining it too much to the NPCs either! That’s actually a bit funny, of all the properness and immersion this game instills into a Player, it also just goes “eh, why not!” type of attitude whenever it feels is appropriate. Maybe you can tell from stuff like this in the game that the developers really started to lose some of their patience while developing this game. I wouldn’t be surprised if for some of them, Divine Mortality has become a life changing experience, hopefully for the better.

Eseli: “Something like the heavens”? Very well, thank you for that piece of information… I shall also keep a note of that. It seems that you Divine Spirits have not fully descended down onto our mortal world but are instead like semi-specters or illusions on earth, while the other half remains back in the heavens. This would explain their supposed immortal-like qualities and the rumor that you do not completely die after death but instead are eventually revived somehow.... Or there are many other layers of existence in this world or part of this world, that we do not know of. Perhaps the believers of the Mother Tree aren’t so wrong in their faith after all?”
Holy crap she knows a lot more about Divine Spirits than I thought she would, and she probably knows more about this subject (in lore) than I do as well! Besides the fact that I know exactly who I am and that this is a game. But Eseli is a very well knowledgeable NPC character, isn’t she? I’ve definitely learned more about her since arriving her at Susana, but I’m confident that she has a lot more backstory that I don’t know about.
Orana: “Amulet, will you be dropping back down into my shop in the future again?”
MC: “Yes, in the near future.”
Orana: “Alright! Then, I expect you to purchase another cake…wait one moment! I do not believe I received my payment! Eseli, make sure you pay me before you leave.”
Eseli: “No, I do not have the funds for that expense. Instead, shall we wait for Amulet Pond to return later on so that he’ll pay?”
Is she actually my follower companion?! That’ll be great, but it sounds more like she can’t leave since she doesn’t have enough money to pay for the cake Orana baked for us earlier…she’s knowledgeable and sly, a dangerous combination if you ask me.
Orana: “Are you planning to stay even longer at my shop/house? Pardon me for saying this Eseli, but you really are a very domestic Snowmel, isn’t that very unique for your kind?”
Eseli: “Ohoho, “pur”, I did say before that my personality hadn’t changed, but merely my mood. And if it is alright with you, then yes, I do plan on waiting for Amulet’s return to this world while I stay here at this shop. If you must… I shall give you my assistance if necessary…”
Orana: “Oh no, it’s perfectly fine. This shop isn’t busy enough for me to need an assistant. Just continue doing whatever you Enchantresses do. I’ll watch in delight if I may.”
Eseli: “Certainly! Ahhahoho.”
Orana: “Haha-HaaHa!”
They were talking a lot about me being a Divine Spirit and all, but it seems like they’ve already totally forgot about my presence here. As if they have already gotten very used to me disappearing from the world. But on the Brightside, it seems like Eseli and Orana have bonded together very well. So now in front of me are two high-class ladies softly laughing away in their newly formed friendship. I believe calling them “gentle ladies” is the term people in their class would use to describe them, maybe.
Anyhow, I can now simply exit out of this conversation mode and the game itself.
They’re now waving a goodbye towards me after they’ve noticed that I’ve began to log out. This game might actually be the best game for introverts! You can talk to NPCs free, easily, and in MANY unique ways. Okay they did slightly get carried away and started to ignore me a bit, also like in real life, but I’m not really an introvert myself so something like that isn’t a problem for me…of course…not in the slightest...
It has been almost 20 minutes since I had logged in today, but now i've gotten off the game almost perfectly to the amount of time I initially gave myself to spend playing before quickly getting off. But I’m really glad that I’ve managed to stop playing now because if I continued playing it would’ve been already nighttime. And while my current situation in life allows me to have a lot of free time during most of my days, I’m still not totally free to waste a whole day every day playing a game. I’m pretty I have the correct priorities.
Alright, that’s enough of Divine Mortality for today. It has only been three days since I started playing this game for the first time. And only 4 days since it was released…but to me it has already felt like a whole week has really gone by!
I’m not going to play the game for the rest of today, but I’ll try to play the game again tomorrow at around 10 AM, hopefully Krafty and May will be around. They seem to have a pretty weird time schedule for playing the game when I think about it now. I guess they are simply a much more nocturnal type of people than I am. At least I try to be awake at normal times during the day and go to sleep at somewhat normal times at night.
Even though I won’t be playing the game today anymore, that doesn’t mean that I won’t be reading more online articles about it! Earlier, I’ve even noticed that a new website called “Divine Library” was created yesterday by the lore community for this game. I’ll definitely check that out later today as well!

On the Road to Elspar (Book 1)
The year is 1329. The Huntress' War has entered its tenth year, inflaming competing nationalisms and pitting the Confederacy of Caldrein against one of the continent's superpowers, the Tenereian Union. Desperately outnumbered, the Confederacy has relied on the prowess of its famed Caldran mercenaries, with highly-trained and experienced warbands returning from foreign conflicts to the defense of their homeland, and it is on their backs that Caldrein has successfully mounted a valiant defense for a decade. But they are losing, and day by day, with all the grace of a sledgehammer, the vast Tenereian armies take one more bit of Caldran territory, one footstep at a time. Sixteen-year-old Neianne from the village of Caelon has submitted herself to Faulkren Academy, one of the centuries-old institutions established to train the next generation of Caldrein's elite soldiers of fortune, to learn the ways of wars for three years before embarking upon the defense of her country. Her dryad family once hailed from reclusive woodland communes isolated from Caldrein's complicated mainstream society, and her upbringing leaves the shy village girl unprepared to suddenly train alongside other apprentices from backgrounds as low as the dirty slums of Caldrein's cities and as high as the halls of aristocratic power. Yet the war is eroding the norms and traditions that the Caldran people have long considered part of their national mythos, and the tensions within the confederacy that have long simmered under the surface - race, class, community, identity - are slowly but surely dividing its people, and Neianne must grow and discover who she really is, even as the war that she is steadfastly training for comes to its inexorable end... On the Road to Elspar is a fantasy quest - a work of interactive fiction wherein readers get to vote on what happens next at critical junctures - that is the first entry in a story that follows Neianne of Caelon, which first began on July 20, 2016. Originally a three-part in medias res prologue to a larger story titled On the Elsparian Road, it was eventually decided that this section - which covers Neianne's three years at Faulkren Academy - become its own independent story due to length, structural, and accessibility reasons. Despite this being a reader interactive work of fiction, due to logistical and verification concerns, voting will only be counted on its thread on the forum Sufficient Velocity, where this story originally began. As such, the content here on Royal Road serves as a story-only archive. You are, of course, entirely welcome to enjoy On the Road to Elspar as a conventional work of fiction, just as you are welcome to comment, discuss, and provide critique. But if you would like to participate in the voting, then I would be honored to welcome you on Sufficient Velocity. To facilitate accessibility and to ensure the best reading experience, this story-only version of On the Road to Elspar will be updated at a periodic pace, even though further content exists, so as to not overwhelm new readers on Royal Road. If you enjoy this story, wish to binge it, and/or want to participate in voting immediately, you may of course read all additional content via the link provided above.
