《Love Death Cemetery》Chap 18: Rivalry (part 3)

The southern part of the cemetery was divided into four large sections: Almer on the far west, Vamin, Valmont and then on the far east, the house of Lug.

The 4 parts were more or less equal and all were separated by an area of about 5 meters.

This 5-meter wide "gray" area was difficult to delineate because it mixed with the two neighboring districts.

The growing need for space had forced the gravediggers to bury corpses in this intermediate zone.

It was this missing area that was one of the causes of the conflict between these two districts.

This feud had been going on for hundreds of years, and the timid Lug was now the center of this storm.

After retrieving a table and three folding chairs from the garbage, Lug headed for the border between the two neighborhoods.

He placed the table in the center of the so-called "neutral zone" and set down the three folding chairs.

He wasn’t sure if the ghosts would sit though.

The two leaders had been invited earlier and arrived on time.

A crowd of ghosts accompanied them and stayed at the edge of their respective quarters.

The ghosts of the grey zone had taken their distance and were watching the meeting from a safe distance.

To Lug's surprise, the two ghosts sat down on the chairs.

He had seen ghosts sitting on the ground or on a grave because he knew that the cemetery was a special place as Eno had mentioned.

But these chairs were from the dump, they shouldn’t have been special. The same thing happened with the old ghost Lug saw sitting on a bench in town.

But now wasn’t the moment for those questions.

Lug put them in the back of his mind and decided to open the session.

As soon as he began to think about his first words, he became aware of the huge crowd of ghosts that had their eyes on him.

Each neighborhood had between 200 and 300 ghosts, so there were probably more than 500 ghosts around him.

This idea made his head spin, he couldn't say anything and his two guests didn't wait for him to open the debate.

"You're always so ridiculous with your police suit... You forget that you used to only do paperwork, never leaving the police station?" the baker said with a snide tone.

"You were quite happy when I was there to take your statement after the fire that ravaged your bakery, hypocrite."

They continued their verbal joust without worrying about anything.

Lug's annoyance finally got the better of him and he pounded his fist on the table.

"I will build a swing in Valmont" Lug said calmly.

The two ghosts turned to him, looking distraught.

"Valmont? But this neighborhood doesn't deserve your attention, it's poor!" lamented the policeman.

The baker kept his mouth shut, biting his lip.

"Why does Valmont deserve less attention than your neighborhoods?" asked Lug.

"Sir, surely you're aware that in most cemeteries, being buried in the east or north is an honor reserved for the wealthy.... Well here it's a little different. Roseraies and Vonne are in the northeast and are very wealthy, but here in the south, the eastern part is the poorest because of its bad reputation." explained the policeman.

"The southeastern part has a bad reputation? Why?"

"Because of the attacks, even the living feel that this end of the cemetery is haunted, that damn army floods the cemetery with arrows every Sunday. So this part was left to the poorest," said the Baker.

"So the western part is more reputable and you think you're superior because you're buried there... I see."

Lug was annoyed but understanding, this microcosm had its rules and he couldn't come in and turn everything upside down, he had to be methodical so as not to alienate the ghosts.

"Now that you understand... How long do you think it will take to build the tower?" the policeman asked, rubbing his hands together.

"I have one last question: the criminal area, why is it in the north, shouldn't it be in the worst place?" said Lug while ignoring the policeman.

Both ghosts looked embarrassed by this question.

"Primont... This neighborhood is... peculiar." began the baker.

"Its location was not really chosen, people were buried there long before this cemetery existed, when it was still a castle. It was the old prison and also where they tortured the prisoners. This place is cursed..." said the policeman trembling.

This cemetery was a big puzzle in which some pieces did not fit together. And Lug felt it was his responsibility to put it in order.

"Listen, gentlemen. I understand your complaints and I think I've found a solution," Lug said with great seriousness.

The two ghosts were hanging on his lips.

"I will organize a fight between the two of you, the winner will see his district elected best district of the south." said Lug with a smile.
