《My Batman System》Chapter 06 - How things work now

Jason asked Hugo for more details, and he learned that most groups had some people that were good at checking the strength of others. His friend that hunted the giant boars for meat had one member that could do that, so Jason wouldn't have to give too much information about himself. Although it felt like he had a late start compared to the other awakened, the human race was just getting used to how things were now. They were just starting to implement and make some prototype weapons using the bodies of the monsters, after all.
Regardless, Jason was told to head to the southern part of the wall as soon as the sun rose. When he arrived there, he felt out of place. That feeling was starting to be quite common nowadays for him since he was trying new things and because the people around looked like battle-hardened warriors. Not only did they have quirks that helped them in combat, but they also had weapons that they made themselves. In fact, Jason saw a guy carrying a metal club as thick as an energy pole like it was nothing.
"You must be Jason. I am Mary," a woman with short black hair that was equipped with a crossbow approached and then said while offering a handshake. "Did Hugo tell you anything about me?"
"Yes, he said that you are the leader of the group he works for," Jason said after he accepted the handshake.
"That is right," Mary said. "He said that you are strong and fast… But you smell like a mage."
"Smell?" Jason asked while frowning.
While Jason hadn't tried the spell yet, he learned Fireball. He didn't have any combat experience, and he didn't have gear proper for combat, so it was clear that it was his only option to rely on magic. Hopefully, the next quirk will be more useful for direct combat. Still… He didn't imagine that a single quirk would make him smell like a mage… even though he never increased his mana.

"It is just a way of saying it… I thought that the biggest organizations had recruited all the mage types, but…" Mary said. "Anyway, I won't ask about your situation, but can you use Fireball?"
"Yes," Jason replied.
"Good, your and my job will be to attack and kill them as fast as possible," Mary said. "The others will work as a shield to protect us after they lure the monsters to our Killzone. Always aim for their heads. While their tusks are valuable, we need their meat to share around the people in the city."
"What about their organs?" Jason asked.
"... Hugo explained to me your situation, but… Well, whatever," Mary said. "Some people like to eat them since it lets them recover their energy and close their wounds faster. It isn't like the healing power of some people, but it is better than nothing. Some people claim that they can make them stronger, but that never worked for us. It must be some urban legend or a secret power that only some have. Regardless, we need to work. We will share the rewards evenly among us. Aside from the parts that we will use, we can sell the others for fifteen hundred bucks, so you will get 250 per kill. Are you fine with that? But the truck isn't ours, so we will have to pay one hundred bucks every time we return to the city."
Jason nodded, barely being able to hide his smile. That was some progress… But he couldn't get carried away since he couldn't tell how much damage he could cause as of now. In any case, after crossing the southern gate of the wall, Jason saw some heavily armored and armed guards. They looked pretty unfriendly, but they had a certain Aura of power around them. Hugo mentioned that the gates were guarded by the three organizations that rule Los Angeles now, and they didn't stop anyone from leaving to hunt monsters.

Speaking of the gate, they were leaving while using a massive truck. Although it was like that, it barely could carry a few of those boars. So, Jason wondered where they got so many of them. He skinned dozens every day, after all.
After crossing some destroyed streets, they stopped the truck, and the driver also made it turn around before parking to make sure that they would have the means to escape if something happened. After that, they left the vehicle and crossed some hills with their guard up. Jason could see the footsteps of the monsters on the ground, so they looked pretty fresh.
Mary signaled for the others to move while Jason and she stayed behind and ready to attack. It didn't take long for them to return while running with their shields protecting their backs. Those guys were pretty fast, but the giant board running toward them was faster. The creature reached them and headbutted two of the tanks, making them fly for five meters. Somehow, they landed on their feet, but it was clear that they felt the attack.
Jason found a perfect line of attack, and so did Mary, both of them fired. Mary's arrow hit the left eye of the monsters, while Jason's Fireball, which was the size of a human head, exploded on the nose of the beast. Once that happened, the monster slowed down and then staggered since it was dizzy and because its face was hurting like hell since the whole nose was turned into pieces.
Jason thought of using the spell again, and so he fired another from the palm of his left hand. Half of the beast's face exploded, and the monster fell to the ground, lifeless. Jason had heard the description of the spell, but he didn't truly believe that he could magic that had the same power as a grenade. Regardless, he won his first battle.
