《Heroes Vs. Villains》Chapter 21.1 - I'll Stand By You ~ Take me in, into your darkest hour

Kate blinked into the late morning in the mid-month of November. Two weeks had slipped quickly as angels had come and gone in the Heroes’ Headquarters mostly talking to Michael about the whereabouts of Thomas Pitch and hunting him down.

She rolled off her bed in exhaustion as nonstop meetings continued every day and tiring of answering questions and standing by Michael's side, but it was worth helping Michael. Even though no one asked her to stay by the Archangel every day, she wanted to.

Kate put on her regular, tight-fitting blue jeans. She slipped on her t-shirt that had a picture of a dove that represented peace and tranquility. Kate stretched before she left her room with her guns holstered around her hips and a leather jacket covering them. Kate put on black, sharp stilettos for she felt she wanted to look pretty today.

“Aye, Kate, getting sassy this morning?” a hero remarked, looking over her leather jacket and her high heels tapped against the white wooden floor that was always spotless.

Kate blushed, “Thank you.” She felt kinda sexy as she walked down the hallway with some straightforward movements, her legs walking in a sassy tone. Her medium-length, light cinnamon hair into a shine and curly; Kate’s hair bounced in a fresh wave on her shoulders.

She went into the cafeteria and grabbed a protein salad. Kate dug her fork in as she observed the heroes going on their daily lives. Some of the heroes had just come in from their night shifts of protecting San Francisco from the monsters and demons, and had tired eyes, ready for bed.

“Night,” replied Kate.

The group of heroes waved at her, “Night!”

The guy in the group winked at her, “Or morning to you.”

Kate giggled as she kept eating with a smile planted on her face. Her dark, long eyelashes fluttered as she blinked and she wore heavy glossy mascara. She finished her breakfast and stood up, about to put the dish into the kitchen window, but a hero came to her, “Here, I got it, darling. Go to Michael.”

Katerina smiled even brighter, “Thank you.” She took a few steps and was inside the office, closing the door. Kate leaned against the door, crossing her legs, and tucking her hands behind her. Michael looked up at her from his documents and Kate’s heart fluttered in her chest with happiness, “Hey.”

Michael stared at her for a second and then commented, “You look lovely today.”

Kate tucked a strand of hair behind her ear, “Aw, thanks.” She moved towards him, her heels clicking against the floor, “What are we planning today?” She looked down at the stack of files, “Want me to look over some files again?” The Archangel’s trust was growing in her every day, letting her go over some of the important documents that he needed an extra pair of eyes to look at or exchange response to an email from other headquarters if Michael was out.

Michael laid the documents down and sat on his desk, “No.” He saw her brilliant eyes shining back, ready to beckon at his order, “Don’t overwork yourself, Katerina.”

Kate went slightly pale, “Michael, don’t worry about me.”

Michael muttered as he neatly put his files together, “I already worry enough about Sara; don’t start making me worry about you.”

Kate stuttered, “Michael. No need.” She saw he was wearing his usual outfit. White buttoned-up shirt with a silk white jacket that artistry designed with golden swirls portrayed as the gates of Heaven on the shoulders. White long trousers fit nicely down his legs, and golden small feathers were weaved at the end of the pants to represent angels. Kate sighed, “You always look so angelic.” She looked down at his white sneakers, always telling her that sneakers were the most comfortable to wear as he was on his feet constantly.

“Katerina, you always look beautiful, even on your bad days. Don’t compare yourself to me,” said Michael, opening his drawers to put the files back.

Kate cast her hazel eyes away from him in an ashamed way, “What do you need me to do today?”

Michael answered, gazing longingly at her, “Warlocks have been spotted at this house in San Jose doing some suspicious activities and suspect they may be linked to Thomas Pitch. I want you girls to go there as soon as you can. They might be gone already because some angels were roaming around that area, but I want you to have a look.”

“Of course,” said Kate.

Michael pulled a portable port from his jacket’s pocket, “I already designed this portable port to the destination. When you get to the house, look outside first. If you see any warlocks or such, try to at least drag one of them with you so I can question. Report to me if there is anything leery.”

Look outside of the house first, then go inside to see any activities of warlocks, and if I see some, try to catch one to bring here… “Do you want me to kill them?”

Michael shook his head, “No. If you can help it, put tracking on all of them if you can. Slap the microchip on their backs and of course try to have them not notice.”

Kate understood what her leader asked of her, “I’ll get some microchip trackers when I head out.”

Michael raised his hand to stop her, “You aren’t leaving without Sara, right?”

“Oh, she’s coming?”

“Aw, going to leave without me?” Sara’s voice smoothed with a chuckle.

Kate whirled in a jump, not even hearing her friend come into the office. She certainly wasn’t in there before Kate, “I didn’t hear you come in!”

Sara shrugged, folding her arms, walking to her father and friend, “If the warlocks try to hurt Kate, I have the permission to kill though, right?”

“Yes,” replied Michael. He sat down and looked at Kate, “Katerina, I said that I wanted you girls to go. I was meaning you and Sara.” He crossed his legs and stared up at his daughter, motioning his finger to have her come closer, “No killing anyone unless you are forced to. Protection is always your first instinct.” He flickered his eyes to Kate, “If nothing unusual happens, take a day off. You girls work hard these past two weeks, so go out to a movie, shopping, whatever.”

“Oh really?” Sara clasped her hands excitedly, glancing at Kate. She was about to flung next to Kate, but Michael cleared his throat. She quickly planted a kiss on his cheek; Michael gave her the portable port, and ran to Kate, bouncing up and down, “Let’s go to the zoo!”

Kate wanted to roll her eyes as she always kept herself too “mature” for fun, childish activities...but a smile betrayed her face, “Thanks, Michael.” She stood there awkwardly as if she needed to give him or hug since Sara kissed him, but bowed slightly in respect, leaving the office, Sara waving goodbye to her father.

“So, we are going to get microchips to stalk the warlocks, go to the house, sneak around, and if nothing to report, go to the zoo and eat out!” asked Sara with a delightful grin.

Kate wondered why her friend was so cheerful today, but she stuffed her hands in her leather jacket. They went two flights of stairs. They heard potions brewing in the first room to the left, fingers typing away on keyboards to the right.

Kate and Sara went down the corridor and to the second room on the same side of the spell room, they went in, and saw witches gossiping.

“Hey!” a witch said energetically, a medium build woman with happy chubby cheeks, “We got your microchips ready. Man, I can’t believe Michael is on the ball with things.” She handed Kate a tracking device, “Don’t lose it. Tracks all the villains you want to watch.” The witch pointed at three buttons, instructing Kate how to use the device.

Sara wandered the room, another witch handing her a bag of super small microchips as small as a fingernail, “Don’t worry, darling. Just slap the villains across the face and slap the microchip on them at the same time—the microchip will immediately disappear invisibly once it hits contact with clothing or skin.”

“Thanks,” said Sara, shyly. She hadn’t been up on the third floor for a while.

“Hey, I also wanted to congratulate you on your inauguration. Haven’t had time. And sixteen years old, before you know it, you will be a thousand in a blink of an eye!”

Sara chuckled nervously, “Yep.” She went over to Kate, who was ready to leave.

Kate smiled at the witches, “Thanks.” They walked out, Sara looking down at twenty microchips in the bag, thinking they looked like some advanced, steampunk insects.

Kate looked down at Sara’s black ankle boots clopping on the floor, “Do you wear anything else than those shoes?” She asked this not judgmentally, just in a curious way.

Sara shrugged, “They are comfortable and fit my style.” She slightly paused her walking to lift one of her feet, “See, I’m wearing my silver spike ankle boots today.”

Kate shook her head, “Still black.”

“Hey,” Sara shouldered her friend, “Blood is less noticeable when I wear black, that’s why I wear black constantly, duh.”

“Not going to wear your cloak?” questioned Kate, eyeing her black flowy mini skirt and black blouse.

“Nah, the outside looks sunny and cool,” answered Sara. "And be nice to not hide underneath the cloak all the time. Show some skin off!"
